Get ready: Board putting logic on parole

The Parole Board is open Under New Management - liberal bleeding-heart management.

This is splendid news for stone killers and rapists, bad news for everybody else.

This week we got the first of what will no doubt be a long line of murderers being cut loose: Karter Reed, who wept at his Parole Board hearing in March. Of course Killer Karter wasn’t crying at Dartmouth High School back in 1993, when he fatally stabbed a teenager he didn’t even know, laughing and jeering as his victim lay dying on the classroom floor. Even Deval’s Parole Board had to stipulate that.

“The Parole Board does acknowledge this tragic senseless loss of a young and innocent victim but . . . ”

But we’re liberals, and it’s our $90,000-a-year job to fling open the prison doors for murderers. For 16 years, these horrid Republicans would never release any of these poor young men who’ve been turning their lives around, and now it’s payback time.

The vote to let Killer Karter go was 4-3. It was close only because the Parole Board still includes some holdovers not appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick, that great benefactor of rapists. Next year the votes will be 5-2, then 6-1.

“Mr. Reed was incarcerated at a very young and susceptible age,” the limousine liberals wrote. But not to worry, Killer Karter has rehabilitated himself. Here are some of the prison programs he availed himself of: Alternatives to Violence, Training for Trainers, Training for Facilitators and Welcome Diversity, Anger Management, Toastmasters and, my favorite, Barber School.

Last week, the Herald tried to find out which members voted to unleash this monster on society. We got the swerve. This matter may take awhile to sort out. I’m guessing the Parole Board will cut loose several more murderers before we can start printing roll calls.

Deval has now appointed three of the seven Parole Board members. One was a GOP holdover. Another was an ex-cop from Milton, Deval’s hometown, who worked for the 2006 Patrick campaign doing “advance” work, which could mean driving. The other one Deval put on - well, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Leticia Munoz is one of the people who voted to release Killer Karter Reed.

You see, she’s a . . . psychologist, working, according to the wire story about her appointment last year, “mostly with poor, urban clients.” As Deval put it, she “adds an important perspective to the deliberations of the Parole Board.”

The lopsided Democrat majority in the Legislature couldn’t be more pleased. Last fall, a bill sailed through the House demanding the appointment of more “behavioral scientists” like Munoz, as opposed to cops.

The solons have a visceral dislike for the local constabulary, and why shouldn’t they? Cops arrest legislators. The previous two House speakers are convicted felons. Tinkering with the makeup of the Parole Board to put more murderers back onto the street. It’s just professional courtesy.

This return of revolving-door justice in Massachusetts means yet more anguish for the families of released killers’ victims. It’s always been bad enough, knowing that sooner or later, a letter will arrive telling you that your son’s murderer is again coming up for a parole hearing, and will soon be singing the blues about how he just had to cut your loved one’s throat because he came from a broken home, or was abused by a priest, or was taunted because of his “Caribbean accent.”

But at least the survivors could take some solace in knowing that, in the end, the Parole Board would do the right thing and send the shiv-wielding killer back to MCI-Cedar Junction.

No longer. This is a return to Dukakis days. The difference is, the henpecked little wimp from Brookline often commuted the sentences himself, and took the heat. This time around, Gov. Patrick will let his new, improved rubber-stamp Parole Board stonewall the press when the released murderers somehow forget their Anger Management training and begin doing what they do best: killing people.

Ann Coulter's father, John Vincent Coulter, had recently died and I was hoping the video I referenced to her, Peaceniks unhinged, would bring a little smile to her face. I was worried about Howie Carr's mental state too, because a nasty judge wouldn't let him leave a.m. WRKO for a morning f.m. station.

Well, allow me to put a positive spin on all this.

First, by throwing open the prison gates to murderers, rapists, and various other thugs, less tax dollars are spent on their "room and board". The result is (presumably) savings to taxpayers.

Second, guess where most of these killers, rapists and thugs end up after they are released? That's right - - the same Democrat neighborhoods they came from; the same Democrat neighborhoods that elected Deval and the rest of the liberals responsible for returning to them the killers, rapists, and thugs!

Sounds like a karmic "win win" to me.

the Red Sox, word comes as to Ted Kennedy’s condition—
as you prob have heard by now, the diagnosis is a brain
tumor. Howie didn’t talk too much about EMK yesterday but not sure if that will be the case today.

Sen. Edward Kennedy has a malignant brain tumor.

Doctors for the Massachusetts Democrat said today that preliminary biopsy results showed a malignant glioma in the left parietal-lobe. It was detected after Kennedy, 76, was airlifted to Boston on Saturday after having a seizure at his Cape Cod home.

The usual course of treatment includes combinations of radiation and chemotherapy, but Kennedy’s treatment will be decided after more tests.

There is no way in hell that Republicans or conservatives (those are two distinct groups these days) want Ted Kennedy to pass away.

Not only is there nothing to be gained politically from his passing, it would actually represent a SETBACK for the GOP.

That’s because Kennedy is strongly disliked in much of the country and that has led to countless fundraising letters invoking his name that have generated untold millions for the cause.

Worse, Ted would be replaced with another Democrat, one probably extremely undeserving of the promotion.

I’d rather keep Kennedy there for another 20 years than see a truly scary individual like Bill Delahunt turn the US Senate into a Hugo Chavez fan club.

I was saying to a friend last weekend, after the news first broke, that the MA legislature is probably in a real quandary about what to do -- repeal the "Romney/Kerry law" now that there's a Dem gov? But, as far as I can tell, there's a lot of antagonism between Deval and legislature! What to do, what to do!!???

that Kerry was gonna win in ‘04 that his people let it be known that the following Sat., there would be a press conference to announce his candidacy for Kerry’s seat. I

Howie just mentioned it (and said it would have taken

Howie mentioned today that even the Globe has noticed MA is losing population (wonder how big a congressional delegation we'll have after the next census). Heard today on Fox 25, they're debating where to add tolls -- Zakim Bridge is one possibility (note: not whether -- where!). The famed MA health insurance initiative has won national notice! Here's the WSJ piece Howie mentioned: The New Big Dig.

I'd resort to that old quip, "Last one out, please turn out the lights," but given MA's historical sluggishness paying its bills and its dim financial future, I guess the utility companies will take care of that!

Pike commuters don’t need equity, just reparations

Memo to the Turnpike Authority’s Toll Equity Working Group:

Those of us who commute on the Pike don’t want “toll equity,” we want reparations. How many times do you tax-fattened hyenas have to hear this - the tolls were supposed to come down after the original bonds were paid off, sometime around 1985.

Guess what? The sun never set on the sun-setted tolls. The hacks decided to “earmark” the toll money, for themselves.

At the State House, they are just itching to pull the trigger on more toll hikes, and more toll booths, and what comes in their wake, which is more toll-takers. Why else would they keep floating these ridiculous trial balloons, only to shoot them down, sort of, later in the day?

In case you didn’t hear the most recent non-denial denial, it’s not that tolls on I-93 are off the table. They’re off the table “at this point.”

So Monday the Pike releases its “37 options” for dealing with the so-called toll equity issue - the fact that some drivers are paying billions for other drivers who pay nothing. As for some of these 37 suggestions - you hacks were kidding, right?

This is on page one, under the chapter heading “MassPike Commuters Believe That Not All Commmuters (sic) Are Paying Their Fair Share of Tolls.”

So Option 3 concerns the West Newton exits, Exit 16, where the toll booths were taken down by then-Gov. Bill Weld during the 1996 Senate race. It’s one of the very few breaks the MetroWest crowd gets - you cut through Newton on Route 16 and you can save the $1.25 you’d otherwise pay at the Weston tolls.

The Turnpike’s suggested “solution”: “Reinstate Int. 16 toll.”

So to deal with the problem of MetroWest commuters getting hammered, the solution would be to make them pay even more.

Next, we have another thorny issue (at least to the Pike’s payroll Charlies): On the western part of the Turnpike, “commuters pay nothing for CA/T (the Big Dig).”

There’s a reason for that, of course. People in the 413 area code don’t use the Big Dig. Studies have been done showing that only 8 percent of the MetroWest commuters use those leaky, God-forsaken tunnels on a regular basis, so you can imagine what the number is in the Golden West. Maybe .08 percent. Again, the equity solution - beggar more of the drivers who aren’t even using the rotten road that’s eating up all the money.

Here’s another bulletin from the Toll Equity Working Group: “Many People Have Observed that MHS (Mass. Highway System) Tolls are Being Diverted Off of the Turnpike.”

And here is their solution to this plain-as-the-nose-on-your-face information: “Explain CA/T funding that MassPike only paid 12 percent of total CA/T cost.”

Only 12 percent! That might be a good argument, if the Big Dig only cost, say, a hundred bucks. But it cost $16 billion - so far. So 12 percent is $2 billion.

No, the 37 options aren’t really getting the “toll equity” job done. Last I checked, “equity” more or less means “equality.” So here’s the deal, either you take them ALL down or you build them for everybody. Of course, the hacks could just increase the gas tax, but that would leave all those toll collectors with no jobs. That ain’t gonna happen.

Which is why I demand reparations. If you stipulate all the boilerplate in the 37 options, it becomes clear that everyone who drives the Pike has been robbed over the past two decades or so, since the original bonds were paid off. We’re not talking about something that happened hundreds of years ago to our ancestors. I just got robbed of $1.25 a couple of hours ago, in Allston. Put it on my tab.

Toll Equity indeed. Repeat after me, Mass Pike commuters: No justice, no peace!
