Obama: Iran is Just a Tiny Country

Likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama told supporters Iran is just a “tiny” country at a campaign stop in Oregon Sunday evening.

"Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don't pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us,” Obama said.

Obama’s rivals, including his fellow Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton, have criticized Obama for his willing to meet with Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism.

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee John McCain issued a strong retort to Obama's assessment at a stop in Chicago on Monday. "The biggest national security challenge the United States currently faces is keeping nuclear material out of the hands of terrorists," McCain said. "Should Iran acquire nuclear weapons, that danger would become very dire, indeed. They might not be a superpower, but the threat the Government of Iran poses is anything but "'tiny.'"

Combative exchanges between Obama and McCain over negotiations with Iran dominated the media’s coverage of the 2008 election last week. From the podium of the National Rifle Association’s national conference McCain said, “I have some news for Senator Obama: Talking, not even with soaring rhetoric, in unconditional meetings with the man who calls Israel a 'stinking corpse' and arms terrorists who kill Americans will not convince Iran to give up its nuclear program.

“It is reckless to suggest that unconditional meetings will advance our interests," McCain said.

Obama seemed to brush off these concerns about Iran’s threats while campaigning in Oregon. “Iran, they spend 1/100th of what we spend on the military. If Iran ever tried to pose a serious threat to us, they wouldn't stand a chance,” Obama said.

Can someone please tell the prospective candidate for the Democratic party that any country whatever the size governed by religious fanatics, possessing nuclear weapons and situated very close to the largest oil reserves in the world poses a very serious threat to the US national security.

I remember GW Bush being chastised by the media because he mispronounced the names of one or two world leaders during the 2000 campaign, but this man is positively imbecile.

Japan is tiny, really much smaller than Iran and controlled half the globe nearly, most of the pacific...Germany controlled much of the other half, and wasn’t much bigger.

Liberals are simply diseased.

The split second Iran can put a workable nuclear weapon on top of a workable rocket, they will launch said rocket.

What could we expect from a guy who doesn’t realize how many states we have?

According to Carl in Jerusalem McCain responded in a statesman like way:

"Before I begin my prepared remarks, I want to respond briefly to a comment Senator Obama made yesterday about the threat posed to the United States by the Government of Iran. Senator Obama claimed that the threat Iran poses to our security is “tiny” compared to the threat once posed by the former Soviet Union. Obviously, Iran isn’t a superpower and doesn’t possess the military power the Soviet Union had. But that does not mean that the threat posed by Iran is insignificant. On the contrary, right now Iran provides some of the deadliest explosive devices used in Iraq to kill our soldiers. They are the chief sponsor of Shia extremists in Iraq, and terrorist organizations in the Middle East. And their President, who has called Israel a “stinking corpse,” has repeatedly made clear his government’s commitment to Israel’s destruction. Most worrying, Iran is intent on acquiring nuclear weapons. The biggest national security challenge the United States currently faces is keeping nuclear material out of the hands of terrorists. Should Iran acquire nuclear weapons, that danger would become very dire, indeed. They might not be a superpower, but the threat the Government of Iran poses is anything but ‘tiny”.

And now Obambi has started to backtrack:

Obama said he fully realizes the danger posed by Iran, but that it is nothing compared to those presented by the former Soviet Union.

"The Soviet Union had the ability to destroy the world several times over, had satellites spanning the globe, had huge masses of conventional military power, all directed at destroying us," he said. "So, I've made it clear for years that the threat from Iran is grave. But what I've said is that we should not just talk to our friends. We should be willing to engage our enemies as well. That's what diplomacy is all about."

So he still hasn't got it - and frankly I hope he never will because that would take a nuclear bomb on a city in the US.

Iran is nearly the size of Alaska. That’s hardly “tiny.”

I’m surprised Hillary hasn’t waded in on this one.

Mrs. Clinton just did another cartwheel.

Yeah, but with her polls nose diving, she could get some mileage out of this. Does she really, honestly expect to be the VP nominee?

She could do an ad today about his 57 states and now the Iran comment...unless she has a bigger bomb waiting to drop. ;)

I think she wants to be VP and therefore is not dropping any bomb. The only bomb out there is this guy Larry Sinclair who doesn’t seem to have any credibility.

These ideas aren’t Obama’s. They come from his foreign policy team made up of the decendents of the old Carter foreign policy team. They want to focus on Russia and are disdainful (if not hateful) of Israel. Expect more of it.
