Following are excerpts from an interview with Lebanese Sunni cleric Sheik Muhammad Abu Al-Qat', which aired on Al-Manar TV on May 10, 2008:
Sheik Muhammad Abu Al-Qat': Today, on May 10, 2008, at 22:50 – through Al-Manar TV – let me bring good tidings to the Muslims: Allah willing, the American empire will very soon collapse. They object to any talk about the destruction of the state of Israel.
Interviewer: And they are celebrating its 60th anniversary...
Sheik Muhammad Abu Al-Qat': That's not the issue. We say that Allah willing, within 10 to 12 years, America will collapse. This won't happen as a result of war. Not at all. Allah will send to America an American Gorbachev, from within. Gorbachev, who brought about the USSR collapse, was one of them. Everybody knows this story. An American Gorbachev will surface in America, and he will destroy this empire.
A sane government policy would be to expel all who profess the beliefs of the cult of death.
What Empire is it this nutjob is speaking of? The moment I hear people on the left or in the world refer to America’s “Empire” I immediately know whatever else they have to say is pure rubbish. When your whole argument starts out with a false assumption there is nothing for the rest of it to stand on no matter how good it might sound to your fellow Marxists.

I don’t want to be an Empire, but the truth is, we do have a military presence in 126 countries.
We may be able to scale that back a little it seems.
Is the number of military deployments the basis for whether or not the term ‘Empire’ applies? How many deployments are we allowed before we ‘go over the line’? If we are invited to a location for mutual protection purposes does that still count against our total?
The definition of empire hinges on the concept of sovereign control not scope of military influence. Other than a handful of U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands) the U.S. does not exercise sovereign power over any foreign governments even in those places where our military is deployed.

By that definition, the Athenians never had an empire, but they were eventually defeated by Sparta and its allies, and stripped of their ability to milk the allies of Athens for tribute.

This Muslim cleric anticipates an unhappy outcome of this extended process, and wants to be in a position to claim that this is all because of Muslim wisdom and the providence of Allah. If you want to see a different outcome, consider returning to the conservatism which rejected global domination and valued a free, un-encumbered republic that trades freely with neighbors without insisting on making those neighbors over in its own image.
