A suspected drug smuggler died Saturday night after being thrown from the car he was driving while trying to elude U.S. Border Patrol agents north of Lukeville.
The events leading up to the fatal crash began about 7 p.m. Saturday when agents working near the Lukeville port of entry spotted a car being loaded with marijuana on the Arizona side, said Rob Daniels, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman. They informed agents working further north in the town of Why, who saw the car turn east on Arizona 86 into the town of Gunsight, he said.
Agents tried to stop the 2000 Jeep Cherokee but the driver, a 29-year-old Mexican man, raced away. He drove back west on Arizona 86 toward Why. As he approached the intersection of Arizona 86 and Arizona 85, he slowed down to about 25 miles per hour and a pregnant woman came barreling out of the jeep, Daniels said.
The driver continued south on Arizona 85 toward Lukeville.
The woman, a 31-year-old member of the Tohono Oodham Reservation, later told agents that the man had pushed her out of the car.
The pursuit continued southbound on Arizona 85 until agents threw down tire spikes in the road, forcing the man to swerze. When he swerved, the Jeep rolled and the man was thrown from the vehicle, Daniels said.
Paramedics from the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and the Border Patrol treated the man until a medical helicopter arrived. The helicopter had to stop and land at least once to resuscitate the man and continue.
He was pronounced dead before reaching the hospital, Daniels said.
The man had a criminal history that included an armed robbery with a weapon in 2000 that triggered his deportation that year, he said. He also had various other drug related offenses. Agents found 300 pounds of marijuana in and around the Jeep, Daniels said.
The pregnant woman was flown by helicopter to Maricopa County Medical Center where she is in stable condition and under observation.
BORDER PING!
The pregnant woman was flown by helicopter to Maricopa County Medical Center where she is in stable condition...
Thank you US taxpayers !
I’m sure she’s 39 and 3/4 weeks pregnant too.
That would make her a citizen, and probably a victim of a carjacking...
He’s just one of the “undocumented immigrants” who are committing crimes that Americans won’t commit.
Well she’s a US citizen, and from being a Native American, I would say the genuine article. No matter what she did or didn’t do in being involved with this guy, she deserves medical treatment.
None of these illegals ever say thank you. They act like it its their right to receive free medical from us. They laugh at the American taxpayer. They know where the money comes from and they don’t give an ats rass.
Yes or overdue and going into labor which is why the smuggler pushed her out of the car.
She is Native American, not an illegal. Good guess though- normally that would be the case.
She was likely in cahoots with the smuggler though- not good. I think if she was with him against her will the article would have said so- we hope anyway.
No, she is not a victim. OK, I am not a mind reader but I will bet the farm that she is (was) helping the smuggler. She may be a Native American but I would love to know if the smuggler has some kind of false ID claiming he is a member of the tribe too.
why do we seem to have these crimes happening with hispanics? Are the prison percentages fair? Is it fair that My grandma has ugly knees? Is it fair that John Kerry calls himself a Vietnam Vet?
Here’s a joke:
A terrible earthquake has just hit Mexico. 2 million people have died and millions more are injured and homeless. Canada sends food and medicine. The European Union sends troops to help stop the rioting. Last but not least, the United States sends 1 million replacement Mexicans.
They are only hispanic of racial origin. Their country of origin is Mexico. We have a lot of U.S. citizens who are hispanic.
The spikes have prevented a dozen deportations. We deport these guys and they have to be deported again a year later; or a few days later. The chase, while expensive in itself, surely on net saved a bunch of tax dollars.
Apparently a natural-born American.
I wonder if the SOB had car insurance?
