Democrat Barack Obama has become an honorary member of an American Indian tribe and promised a proactive policy to help tribal people if he wins the White House in November.
The Illinois senator who is leading rival Hillary Clinton in their race for the party's presidential nomination, joined the Crow Nation, a tribe of some 12,100 members in Montana, taking on a native name and honorary parents in a traditional ceremony.
Senator Obama, who would be the first black US president, was "adopted" by Hartford and Mary Black Eagle and given a name which means "one who helps all people of this land".
"I was just adopted into the tribe, so I'm still working on my pronunciation," Senator Obama told a crowd after stumbling over some of the native names.
"I like my new name, Barack Black Eagle," he said.
"That is a good name."
Many in the audience wore traditional feather headdresses and some banged drums ahead of Senator Obama's visit, the first by a presidential candidate to the Crow Nation.
Senator Obama held rallies throughout Montana, which holds its primary election on June 3.
The state is home to some 60,000 American Indians, making them a key swing vote, according to Crow Nation spokesman Dale Old Horn.
Senator Obama said he would appoint a Native American adviser to his senior White House staff if he wins and would work on providing better health care and education to reservations across the country.
"Few have been ignored by Washington for as long as Native Americans, the first Americans," Senator Obama said.
Old Horn said the tribal members related to Senator Obama because of his background.
"His heritage of being poor, of being an outsider, you know those two things are the commonalities that he has with us," he said.
"We've always been treated like outsiders when it comes to government policy. In addition to that, we all grew up poor."

It’s a good thing I just happened to have a bucket nearby.
Obama grew up poor?
I can imagine his tribe name: Eagle That Walks.
(So full of crap, he can’t fly...)
if he’s a Crow, that makes him the sworn enemy of the Cheyenne and Sioux.
What a pantload.
Obama should visit the Colorado Turtle Tribe which seem to be chicano (or xicano as they say it). They participated in the slaughter of bison belonging to their neighbors ranch. Over 30 bison killed in a fence war between a libreal from Austin, TX (Haun) and ranchers in the Fairplay, Colorado area. Note that Colorado is open range and Haun put up fences to keep bison out that were not up to code for fences.
LOL! You're right, the Crow were always sucking up to whites, being scouts with the U.S. Army fighting against the Cheyenne and Sioux. Plus wasn't Hoover honored this way too? I recall seeing a picture of him posing with a headress on.
Actually, there was a minor error in the translation: the correct name is Barack Eating Crow.
So, Obama stumbles over a few native names, no big deal. George W. Bush could stumble over an unfamiliar name and the MSM would say that would be because he is stupid. Got an extra bucket for me?;)
Funny, I had always regarded the Crow as intelligent people. Wrong again.
the crow nation welcomed obama in montana with gifts for his family. his new native american name is barack black eagle.
>>intelligent people. Wrong again.
True story from the late 1950s told by a rancher friend in western Utah. There was an older Indian man who rode on horseback into the rancher’s small town once every month or so for supplies. His wife would always walk behind. They would load up the horse; he would climb back up, and the two would head off for the long journey back to the hills. Once, the rancher asked the man why his poor wife didn’t get a chance to ride; “She no have horse” was the answer.
“I like my new name, Barack Hussein Muhammed Black Eagle,” he said.
Apparently the Crow didn’t get the memo stating that you can’t mention ‘black’ anything when talking about Obama. But, then again, the Crow fall into that protected group of folks that don’t get in trouble for using words.
I am blood-brother with the Crow, but not to the muzzie-Osama. My Crow name is secret - I don’t need the feds, again ........... FRegards
Obama: Black is my middle name.
