An act of bravery to defend a co-worker has cost a Minnesota gas-station attendant his job.
Mark Beverly, an overnight shift supervisor at a SuperAmerica in Roseville, Minn., was fired in March after he jumped on a masked robber who he believed was attacking a fellow employee.
SuperAmerica said

“Marathon Petroleum Company, the owner of the SuperAmerica chain, said Beverly was told what to do in the company handbook which advises employees to “cooperate: don’t argue, resist or attack the robber” and through a computer-based training program Beverly was required to complete when he was hired.”
Pretty sad when your company policy excuses armed robbery as a cost of doing business.
The feminization of America continues. Man gets fired for defending damsel in distress. Unbelievable.
What? The gas station owner would rather have a funeral?....
If the other employee screamed, then the man had “reasonable cause” to believe her to be in physical danger. Super America should be boycotted.
I won’t buy from Pizza Hut because, back in the 1990s, they fired a delivery person for carrying a gun (with a concealed carry permit) which the delivery person had to use on an attacker. Yes, the delivery person violated company policy and was fired for it. Pizza Hut violated my standards of common decency and common sense, and was permanently disqualified from doing business with me as a consequence.
Super America should therefore similarly face the natural consequences of its actions.
Marathon and Super America are now on my “Do Not Buy” list.
Is anyone aware of any other trade names under which they operate?
If this was near my house, I’d go in and then say “Oh Yeah, this is the place that fired the guy for doing the right thing. Buh Bye!”
Tough one, but I’ll side with the company. Here’s the part of the report that decides it for me:
“The security tape did not show the female co-worker struggling with the robber over the cash-register drawer, Casey said. The robber reached in and grabbed cash out of the drawer.
‘We have a statement from both [Beverly] and the female employee,” Casey said. “Neither one of them say anything about her being attacked, hurt or anything, and the video we have substantiates it.’”

This is MN. The legislature will probably now grant a subsidy to the station for new high-tech security cameras and some more 1st aid kits.
Speedway stores and Super America stores are the same company. Just found that out.

Well stated! This company has no right to any name-claim connection to America or American values.
As an example, I was taught in a NY self-defense class that any degree of robbery, even strongarm robbery, justifies the use of deadly force to terminate it because it is considered a threat to the victim's life.

Bad Guys everywhere rely on the Police advising people to cooperate.
Hey Captain Rick: tell *that* to William Bell’s victims at the Panmure RSA. I’m sure their survivors would be most grateful for your sage advice.

In NY state? That’s fascinating.
Employee who gave a damn is damned to look for another job.
Businesses wonder why there is very little employee loyalty anymore.
So by these standards, the heroes on 9/11 who fought the terrorists on the plane should have sat in their seats and not fought back.
They should have allowed the terrorists to fly the plane into whatever target they had intended because up to that point, they hadn’t physically hurt or struggled with anyone...right?
Thanks.
I will add Speedway to my list.
The company would rather have the guy dead than go against PC.

Sounds a lot like appeasement...which has always worked SO well. Sorry, I think I’ll continue to carry - thanks anyway, Cap’n Rick.

That seems to pretty well sum up Marathon’s line of reasoning.
This manager should the hell out of Marathon and SA. The Business Socialists may not like that...but it is absurd to fire someone who defends themselves and their employees
Fortunately, most rank and file cops believe you should defend yourself during a crime.....most of the management in law enforcement are against that because a lower crime rate, via victim self-defense, can make their jobs obsolete.
Yeah I will be avoiding any Marathon owned businesses. Not only because of this situation....but also that their stores are unsafe....since employees are not allowed to defend during a crime...no customer is safe
My wife asked why they tell women to fight off a rape with everything they have but then they tell you to be submissive to a rober?
Well, I guess you submit to a rober but fight a disrober...oh, c’mon, that was FUNNY!
My wife has the same comment about the rape dichotomy, it makes no sense.
Not right.

And to continue that line, after the plane ended its flight into the target, the passengers could then give a safe account of the event to the authorities.
Remember, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Smaller chance the company will have to defend against a lawsuit.
My favorite robber video is the woman clerk shooting the toad in the crotch who had showed her a gun and made her empty the cash register for him in a convenience store. That sort of “feminization” is good for the country.
“Yup, you sheeple just stand there and take it. Only us big guy law enforcement types who get ‘specialized training’ can handle carrying a big ol’ gun, or defending ourselves. - Of course, we won’t actually BE there to assist you, but we’ll pull out a big notepad and take your statements after the fact.’
You know, maybe if the cops stopped carrying guns, when they came upon a suspect who was armed, maybe they wouldn’t start shooting at the cops because they may not have originally intended to use the weapon. Wanna turn in your gun first and find out, o wise LEO?
Seems to also sum up the reasoning of the person I replied to.
Amen to that...if that was me getting robbed, there might have been a much bigger mess to clean up afterwards after the robber took a triple-tap.
Explain the difference to me please. Both committed a crime. The heroes fought back in both cases, yet one is right to have done so and the other isn’t?
EXACTLY...after all, there is no proof that the terrorists had any intentions to hurt the passengers, right?
Coporate America is collectively STUPID- and I don’t mean this in a little kid way of calling something “BAD”, I mean Corporate America collectively really is STUPID and IDIOTIC.
That is if you survive. If not...we will be there to provide your free bodybag and a nice ride in the cadavar van.
No. The company would rather lose a few bucks and let the perp get away with it than have the guy dead. Really. It’s a very rational policy. It may be emotionally unsatisfying, but they’re running a business, not staging a morality play.
“...after all, there is no proof that the terrorists had any intentions to hurt the passengers, right?”
Perhaps you don’t remember what transpired on that flight.
I really don’t need to do that, do I? Please read my original post to see what persuaded me in this particular case.
He claimed the female cried out. I would guess he thought she had been hurt and came to her aid.
I would say he acted appropriately. If I were the management, I would give him the benefit of the doubt and praise him for his quick action to save the female. He is a hero in my book!
” If I were the management, I would give him the benefit of the doubt...”
Amd maybe I would too. But his management reviewed the tape and the transcript of the first interviews and decided that it was important to reinforce the established company policy.
someone in Minnisota give this guy a job!
I did get a Citizens Commendation signed by Tony Bouza himself though.
