White House Challenges NBC News to Explain Whether Iraq Is in 'Civil War' (NBC LIES AS USUAL)

The White House is calling on NBC News to declare whether the network still believes Iraq is mired in a “civil war,” escalating a fight that began when NBC aired an interview with President Bush that the White House called the product of “deceitful editing.”

The network rattled the White House in November 2006 when it called the conflict in Iraq a “civil war.” On Monday, White House Counselor Ed Gillespie wrote a letter to NBC News President Steve Capus, looking in part for an explanation of how NBC News now views the war.

White House press secretary Dana Perino said Tuesday the administration is “fed up” with the way NBC News is treating the Iraq war.

"I remember very distinctly, how there was a quite the pomp and circumstance when NBC, on The Today Show, decided to declare that they were declaring Iraq was a civil war. But since then, after the surge and things certainly have improved in Iraq, NBC has never had a corresponding ceremony to say that Iraq is not in a civil war. We're just curious to find out what they believe," she said.

Gillespie noted in his letter that “around September of 2007, your network quietly stopped referring to conditions in Iraq as a ‘civil war.’”

Next I expect NBC to rig the Iraqi war with remotely detonated explosives to stage a civil war. The explosives will go off a split second before the civil war, and then Jane Pauley will apologize.

Yeah, pick a fight with the MSM, that WILL seriously fire up our base, which is needed these days.

NBC is chock full’o partisan hacks that aren’t even bothering to pretend to disguise their political agenda these days.

Revoke NBC access to government agencies under control of the executive branch.

Thats what I’d do.

Revoke NBC access to government agencies under control of the executive branch.

Then impose the Lincoln/Burnside method of dealing with traitors during time of war: lock 'em up for the duration, like Abe did to the Copperheads.

Start with Olber-Douchebag and Sissy Chrissy.

Technically, a civil war is a contest between two (or more) factions each determined to control the central power of the state. Thus, the American Civil War was not a civil war - as Jefferson Davis never intended to march on Washington and displace Lincoln - but a war of rebellion or secession, if you will. The struggle between Lenin and the Whites was a civil war, as was the contest between Mao and Chiang. And though the Viet Cong were in reality controlled by Hanoi, one might argue that the struggle between the VC and the RVN was a civil war.
The question is: do the insurgents in Iraq intend or desire to overthrow the government in Baghdad and install their own regime?

With just three days to be counted in the season (which ends tonight), Fox led all networks with a 4.2 rating/11 share in adults 18-49, followed by ABC and CBS (tied at 3.0/8), NBC (2.8/8), Spanish-language Univision (1.5/4) and CW (1.1/3).

Fox, which benefited from airing the Super Bowl this season, is up 5% vs. last season — the only network showing gains. CBS, which had aired the Super Bowl a year ago, is down the most (19%), while ABC and CW are off 14% and NBC by 10%.

>>>The WH is seriously kicking butt. :)<<<

The White House ought to demand "equal time" under the "fairness doctrine" to refute NBC's civil war claim.

That would really put the MSM in a tailspin.....

Exactly!

Every time I hear some shrill Al Qaeda echoing American lib spew out crap regarding the arrest or impeachment of Bush and his cabinet, I wonder to myself that in a just world, these scum would be tried for treason.

Yet they get a bullhorn to propagate their anti-American views instead.

I think that’s exactly what republicans, from the president on down, need to start doing. It’s not like they have to worry about the MSM not being their best friend anymore.

I’m sure most conservative politicians are concerned about MSM targeting them with even more focus if they take them to task openly about their bias, but there comes a point at which you might as start fighting back because you’re getting your ass kicked anyway.

For conservatives that point arrived years ago.

Nice to see them challenging the MSM, but it probably won’t get them anywhere. NBC can simply explain that the surge has suppressed the civil war but the centuries-old deep-seated animosity between the Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds cannot be simply waved away with a “magic wand” or suppressed indefinitely with military might, and as soon as the surge ends then the fighting between these groups will begin again and the civil war will pick up where it left off.

Or something to that effect...

And just exactly who decides when a country is at civil war? Certainly not the news agencies. That would just require too much credibility. Newsies are where plagiarists go out to play.

I think the White House could have tagged numerous “news” agencies for calling it a civil war but as quick as they called it a civil war they never have told us when it ended.

"as Jefferson Davis never intended to march on Washington and displace Lincoln"

If Lee had won decisively at Antietam or Gettysburg the result may well have been Confederate forces in a position to "march on Washington and displace Lincoln" -- but you are correct that it did not seem to be any part of the war aims of the Confederacy to rule a united USA in place of "Yankee rule" -- they wanted to secede. That does not make it any less of a "civil war" in common usage.

Many "civil war" conflicts have been fought over secession or independence movements rather than one group seeking to take over ruling the entire nation in place of another. You are trying to narrow the definition of a "civil war" from conventional usage.

It strikes me that this is a good example of how the President’s base is no longer behind him.

There was a time when an incident such as this would have led to outrage on FR and other conservative sites ... floods of calls and emails to NBC news and its sponsors.

Now we just get the popcorn and watch the argument.

It’s hard to overstate how much damage was inflicted on the Republican party by the amnesty debacle.

Lincoln didn’t jail traitors, he jailed anyone who was critical of him. He shut down scores of newspapers and had their publishers and editors arrested. He had the Maryland legislature arrested before it could debate secession.

I am not a civil war expert, but I understand that Washington was heavily fortified. I doubt Lee would have attempted to breach these defenses. I believe though I don’t have any proof that he wanted to capture Harrisburg, PA - the capital of a major northern state - to bring home to those in the North that they could be invaded - and thus bring about a negotiated peace.
The conflict between 1861-1865 may be considered a civil war in common usage. That is part of the problem that prevents people from viewing the conflict properly. So, I plead guilty in attempting to narrow the definition.
If you believe the conflict to be a civil war, why were southern troops called rebels, a term which signifies rebellion or secession not civil conflict.
