Prognosis Usually Bleak for Condition, a Glioma
NY Times ^ | May 21, 2008 | LAWRENCE K. ALTMAN and ANAHAD O’CONNOR

Posted on 05/20/2008 7:42:41 PM PDT by neverdem

The statement that Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s doctors issued on Tuesday made clear that his malignant tumor was a glioma, a cancer that arises in the brain and that often carries a bleak prognosis.

Gliomas occur more frequently with advancing age, and studies have shown that in general patients in their 70s fare less well than those 45 and younger. Still, the statement also said Mr. Kennedy, 76, was in “good spirits and full of energy” and walking around his room at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Mr. Kennedy’s glioma is in the parietal area in the upper part of the left side of his brain, above the ear. This area of the brain involves motor control and ability to understand language, among other functions.

Malignant brain tumors rarely spread elsewhere in the body. But like the root of a plant, cancerous brain tumors can invade nearby areas in the brain.

Gliomas are categorized by subtypes and by a numerical gradation based on how aggressive they appear. But the doctors did not provide these details or the tumor’s size, saying only that the diagnosis was made by removing a small piece of the cancer in a biopsy, which followed a series of other tests that began after Mr...

--snip--

Mr. Kennedy underwent surgery seven months ago at the same hospital to restore blood flow through a narrowed carotid artery in his neck and to prevent a possible stroke. He had no symptoms at the time, the hospital said.

As part of the testing for that procedure, Mr. Kennedy very likely had an M.R.I. brain scan, Dr. Keith L. Black, director of neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said in answer to a question. Because gliomas are fast-growing cancers, it is possible...

As a medical professional it is my professional opinion upon studying the location of the tumor and the type of tumor that it was caused by crushing empty beer cans against the side of the head.

"Is there some PC rule on FR that says that when an evil man gets sick, we must pretend he was saint?"

I was under the impression that comments weren't supposed to assert violence or acts of violence, nor profanity. So far I haven't heard anyone call Ted a profane word or name, nor have I read any comment proposing violence against his person.

"He’s lived a full 76 years. A privilege denied to untold millions."

No one in my immediate family has lived to be that age. Since longevity doesn't run in my family, I doubt I'll get to be that age either.

Personally, I’d prefer to have seen him slip off a dock in a drunken stupor, and wrap himself up in a lobster pot line about ten feet underwater.

Maybe then, he’d get a flash of MaryJo’s face. At last.

Don’t like Ted, but this is a bad thing to happen to anyone. However, I would feel worse were he not a 76 year-old multi-millionaire.

Why? The PC police?

Telling the truth is now verboten?

Are you old enough to remember when JFK was assassinated? I am. He was a crappy president and then after his death, he was Saint JFK.

Yep, I was in highschool when JFK was killed. I remember it like it was yesterday. Ah yes, the myth of Camelot. Another pile of crap sold by the media.

Someone smarter than me said that, “the Lord works in mysterious ways.”

May God have mercy on him and his family.

Sure, and when the people over at DU say evil things about conservatives that have fallen ill, they are evil.

And he made the trains run on time. Wait a minute, that was that other good fellow, Benito Mussolini.

I'm not “saying evil things” about TK, I am honestly reporting his record.

If his record is evil, as in his cutting off funding to the RVN, then I will not apologize for being truthful.

If you want to be a PC lapdog, that's up to you. I'm not playing. TK did horrible, evil things during his entire career in the Senate. Many of America's current deep problems stem from bills he sponsored or supported.

And the millions murdered in SE Asia after his colossal act of treachery and dishonor are still dead.

I am not a big fan of Teddy’s either but he is in my prayers.

Was it Evil for Gov, Reagan to sign a bill liberalizing the California Abortion laws in 1967?

We all deserve death; it’s foolish to split hairs about who deserves to die first.

Not one Vietnamese or Cambodian will be brought back to life by whooping about the old man’s bleak prognosis.

I'm not one of them either. The MSM will canonize him now that it appears he may be terminal, but even a simple random search though the C-SPAN archives would pick up some of Ted's vitriolic and personal attacks on Republicans, judicial nominees and conservative political leaders. I'm not keen on seeing anyone suffer this kind of fate, but we can pray for his physical recovery while retaining an objective, critical sense of revulsion at his tactics (e.g., the "Robert Bork's America" smear, etc., etc., etc., ad nauseum, ad infinitum).
