Bay Area air board approves global-warming fees for businesses
Contra Costa Times ^ | 5/21/8 | Denis Cuff

SAN FRANCISCO — The Bay Area's air pollution board today became the first in the United States to charge businesses fees for the global warming gases they emit.

The fees, ranging from $180,000 a year for a large oil refinery to $1 annually for a service station, would fund district efforts to calculate, study and control carbon dioxide, methane and other warming gases.

Representatives of oil refineries and several business groups opposed the fee, saying it would duplicate and interfere with the state's landmark law to control global warming gases statewide.

Air board administrators and board members said their efforts would complement the attempts by the California Air Resources Board to rein in global warming gases.

The fees were approved on a 15-1 vote. Mike Shimansky, a Danville Town Council member who serves on the Bay Area board, said he worries that once established, the fees will grow sharply in coming years.

The fees, effective July 1, will raise $1.1 million from 2,500 Bay Area businesses that already have air district permits that limit their emissions of smog-forming gases. Most would pay $1 or less a year.

This unelected board calls it a fee, because they don't have the authority to tax.

I guess citizens will need to be monitored for their personal methane releases.

I can see them saying “$1 per year; that’s not so bad.” Oh, but it’s just a start.

What’s the goal here? Easy; to raise $1.1 million in revenues. More money for bureaucracy. More disincentive for productive private business.

Bureaucracies exist to consume and consume to exist. They do nothing to solve the problems they were created to solve, only perpetuate them. They also abuse the rights of the individual in the exercise of the power of the State.

ALL POWER TO THE SOVIETS!!!!!

What a bunch of crap. These refiners could easily afford at least a million a year and the gas stations should be paying at least several 10's of thousands. /s

For Ancient Roman, it’s called a “tribute”. Gangsters call it “protection money”.

Camel's nose under the tent alert!

I don't give a hoot what the San Fransicko freaks do, businesses that stay there deserve what they get. But if this insane notion comes to a place near you, Raise Hell! This simply generates funds for EcoFreaks who want to put you out of business! This disguised tax will increase astronomically over time and will give the Greenies incredible power over you.

Of course, this is the real story. Busineses get to fund government employees, who are paid to harass the businesses, generating higher fees, which funds more government employees . . .

My first inclination as a business owner would be to refuse to pay. If they were able to get a court to force me to pay, my next inclination would be to move the business, the jobs that go with it, and the resulting tax revenues out of the jurisdiction. Easy solution.

Traders are selling CO2 credits. The United States has fallen over the cliff. It only hurts when the sudden stop occurs.

This year has been a disaster thus far. Welcome aboard the SST to hell. The socialists are running the nuthouse.

They will; count on it. Next the SF Counsel will decide which counties surrounding SF have the most "workers" driving into the City -- they'll go after that county to "contribute".

SF has tried this before using another method.
