SPECIES STATUS: Unreliable data, threat to energy development cited.

By DAN JOLING The Associated Press

The State of Alaska will sue to challenge the recent listing of polar bears as a threatened species, Gov. Sarah Palin said Wednesday.

She and other Alaska elected officials fear a listing will cripple oil and gas development in prime polar bear habitat off the state's northern and northwestern coasts.

Good News!!!! At least the state of Alaska gets it. It is time for us all to start demanding that Congress open up ANWAR and our off shore reserves for exploration and drilling!

Good job Palin! She’s correct...the new law allows ANYONE to bring suit and push off ANY kind of a project for a review that could take years.....

I would like to ask a serious question along the lines of this thread.

When did the “sue to get your political agenda passed” begin in this country? I don’t remember it as a kid and now it seems that is par for the course. What the heck happened and when? And how do you sue an Agency for not doing something you wanted? Madness.

Good on ya Alaska!!!!...’bout time somebody gets it. Have relatives who were ‘sourdoughs’ in Nome from the gold rush days. Proud of that fact.

Hopefully the Alaskan Eskimos will have a say in this i.e. the ruling discriminates against native Americans. I believe that they have been all for drilling in ANWR.

Canada may also want to sue over the listing!

If polar bears are listed it will end American hunters from bringing home a trophy of the very limited number of permits issued.
The tags are very expensive ( well over 25k) and more than 90% are sold to Americans. The fees from those hunts pays for 95% of polar bear study and research.

Good point Beagle8U. That’s one reason Safari Club International was opposed to this listing.

Those folks are a different breed!!! I have a friend who was a fishing/hunting guide there when it was a frontier.

Yank has talked with him, he’s one of a kind.

God Bless Gov. Sarah Palin. Oh how I wish Bush, McCain, or any of our Replublican leaders in D.C. would back her up on this. But don’t count on it.

Palin argued there is not enough evidence to support a listing.

This is very good news, she is correct and from what I've read much of the evidence that has been used is faulty. I believe if an unbiased judge with a little common sense is on the case this ruling will be over turned.
