Senate passes Iraq war funding bill with add-ons

The Senate has passed $165 billion to fund the war in Iraq until President Bush's successor takes over. The 70-26 vote came just minutes after a majority of Republicans voted to add tens of billions of dollars for veterans college aid and extending unemployment benefits to the war funding bill.

But Bush has promised to veto the bill if it contains the domestic measures, and the president still has enough GOP support to sustain a veto.

The Senate also voted 63-34 to block a Democratic plan to urge Bush to begin redeployment of combat troops and place other strings on his ability to conduct the war in Iraq.

The House still has to act on the bill. Last week, the House voted to reject money for continuing the war.

I like how they all talk against the war but still vote for it. Pandering jackasses.

Someone needs to teach this person math. NO Bush does NOT have enough GOP support to sustain a veto. That only needs 67 votes.

“..extending unemployment benefits to the war funding bill.”

With unemployment at about 5%, which is quite low, why do we need to extend unemployment benefits?

Veto veto veto veto.....strip all the extraneous BS having nothing to do with the war in Iraq or Afghanistan from it.

You want to pass all that extra stuff....file separate legislation and/or include it in the next round of defense spending budgets.

“Sustaining” a veto needs only 34 votes, at most. It takes 2/3 to “override” a veto, so 66-34 would sustain, as would 65-33, etc.

I have been sayint that for years. If we had a President with huevos, or one that really cared, he would tell Congress.....a separate bill for each item is required, no more add-ons, etc. or it will be vetoes.
If Congress had to work that hard they would quit with all the extraneous BS.
