Thieves are targeting U.S. flags at the county courthouse and anyone who sees someone taking a flag from the courthouse grounds should call police.
We are trying to do something nice for the community and these people are destroying it. It just doesnt make any sense to me, Otila Gonzalez, administrative assistant to County Judge Mike L. Fernandez, said Friday.
Gonzalez said the small U.S. flags that line the sidewalks surrounding the courthouse, as well as several larger flags affixed to light posts on the courthouse grounds, were put up at the beginning of May because of a number of dasys of remembrance during the month.
We had V-E Day, Police Officer Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day, Gonzalez said.
But two of the larger flags, as well as a number of the smaller flags along the sidewalks, have been stolen, Gonzalez said.
Adding insult to injury, Gonzalez said the thieves have also broken several of the poles on which the larger flags were hung.
Im really starting to have second thoughts about putting (the flags) out for the Fourth of July, Gonzalez said.
She said citizens often mention that the courthouse square in Uvalde is so nicely decorated, but she pointed out that Uvaldes Lions Club takes care of the square and the flags placed there are removed every night.
Gonzalez said she is also incredulous when someone tells her that they saw people taking flags from the courthouse square, but did nothing to stop them and did not call the police.
Everyone carries a cell phone nowadays; just call the police department if you see someone taking flags from the courthouse grounds, Gonzalez said.
She said the larger flags are valued at $58.
That might not seem like a lot of money, but its money the county could be spending elsewhere, Gonzalez said.
Put a video camera on it......
Mexican Bandits.
sniper in bushes is better.
One or two thieves laying by the flags would put an end to this very quickly
I would bet it’s some of the Aztlan-types.
Video...Yep, but they are scared of what they would capture.
