Group wants Wi-Fi banned from public buildings

Group wants Wi-Fi banned from public buildings

A group in Santa Fe says the city is discriminating against them because they say that they're allergic to the wireless Internet signal. And now they want Wi-Fi banned from public buildings.

Arthur Firstenberg says he is highly sensitive to certain types of electric fields, including wireless Internet and cell phones.

"I get chest pain and it doesn't go away right away," he said.

Firstenberg and dozens of other electro-sensitive people in Santa Fe claim that putting up Wi-Fi in public places is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The city attorney is now checking to see if putting up Wi-Fi could be considered discrimination.

But City Councilor Ron Trujillo says the areas are already saturated with wireless Internet.

"It's not 1692, it's 2008. Santa Fe needs to embrace this technology, it's not going away," Trujillo said.

The city attorney hopes to have a legal recommendation by the end of the month.

What else would one expect from the majority of fruitcakes in cali? Why don’t they want cellphones banned—that would be just as likely a suspect—even more since they seemed to be attatched permanently to some peoples ears?

These restrict the freedom of normal people. Having different sized currency or curbs that accommodate wheel chairs do not.

I have an allergic reaction whenever I am "mandated" to pay for others well being instead of being able to graciously fund the cause on my own through the goodness of my heart.

Do I have a case for a law suit?

“Granted, I had a friend years ago who lived UNDER high-tension power lines, and he could feel that sometimes.”

Walk under some TVA transmission lines while it’s really humid or misty and you can feel it all over your body. It stunts the tree growth on both sides to.

It has already been proved decades ago that power line corona has no adverse effect on living matter.

Why, in a dry climate if you rub your feet on carpet you will get up to a 50kv (or more) shock when grasping a door knob.

This whinger probably also suffers from flushing, blushing, running at the mouth, delayed borgorigmus and shortness of pants.

Well, let your imagination be your guide.

Bwaaaaahaaaaaaahhhhaaaaaaa! I love it! They are tearing themselves apart. I truly believe that most bunny kissing tree kissers are Luddites in disguise. No kidding, I once had a lady in one of my classes I teach on EM that she could “feel” Wi-Fi and it made her bones ache.......(she wasn’t aware however that the building she was in was wired to the hilt with it.

Arthur, you and your 'dozens' are friggen NUTZ. Wi-Fi is the least of your 'electro-sensitive' problems and the only solution is to MOVE OFF THE EARTH, like to Uranus.

As every second of every day since you and your dozens of 'electro-sensitive people' were born have been bombarded with ... THIS...

That my crazy as a loon friend is the 'Solar Wind' and our 'Magnetosphere'. It's Electrical and all around the Earth and it's 'bazillions as times as strong' (tech term) as any Wi-Fi signal.

Here's something else for you Arthur ... you better it down ... ready? ... billions of GAMMA RAYS are going through your body like a bullet as you sit there and whine about Wi-Fi. Gamma Rays Arthur, GAMMA freaking RAYS!!! Who you gonna sue now, God?

Sweet Jesus PLEASE reopen all the lunatic asylums so all the 'Arthurs' can go back where they belong.

They are tearing themselves apart.

Sadly enough though they are tearing apart our free society with their personal concerns at the same time.

Sadly, no.

These people are completely serious. And completely nuts.

They're just modern-day Luddites that don't have enough sense to come in out of the rain. They are absolutely no different from people who go to the doctor...

"Doctor, it hurts when I do this!"

"Well, then , you damn fool, DON'T DO THAT!!"

He can solve the problem by moving out of the city.

Sure, but a single discharge isn't the same as a continuous atmospheric potential gradient much greater than the normal (which I believe is on the order of 50-100V/m vertical).

You wouldn't do well in an environment in which you were subjected to a continuous barrage of 50kV shocks. If nothing else, your nervous system would be shot in hours. But vegetation doesn't have nervous systems, so that doesn't apply to trees.

Nevertheless, "no adverse effect" is not the same as "no effect". I doubt that growth is stunted, per se, but I'd be willing to bet that there's some effect, for example branches that reach in the direction of the wires might show some differential growth effects. I don't know the research, and in real environments there's never a "control" experiment to show what would have happened without the increased atmospheric potential.
