Radiation leaks detected in Chinese earthquake zone

Chinese environment authorities say they have found fifty hazardous sources of radiation since this month’s earthquake.

Senior environment official, Wu Xiaoqing has said the situation is returning to normal after the discovery of thirty five of the radiation sources. The other fifteen had been also been pinpointed but not yet dealt with.

He said none of the radiation was accidentally released from nuclear facilities.

He said the fifteen unrecovered sources were mostly buried in rubble or in dangerously unstable buildings.

The disaster area is home to China's chief nuclear weapons research lab in Mianyang, as well as several secretive atomic sites, but no nuclear power stations.

The known death toll from the quake already exceeds 55,000, but more bodies are expected to be found as the debris from the dozens of flattened cities, towns and villages is cleared.

Also makes one wonder about “The Truth”. Did WE detect it?? ...forcing China to issue a statement??

depends on what it is. If it’s from hospital equipment and so forth, not that big a deal. Presumably if it was from their weapons labs, they wouldn’t be talking about it at all, so my assumption is this is relatively minor stuff.

That area is the heart of their nuke weapon research...

I know, but if there’s damage to their weapons facilities, I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t be releasing it to the public. I’m guessing these are medical/industrial sources.

When India exploded five nukes in '98, the CIA and the rest came to know of it after the Indian prime minister announced it, on public television.

Nah. Just a massive release of radon. Yeh. That sounds good. Go with that spin.

It is actually more frightening if the radiation came from sources they did NOT know about.

What about naturally occurring radiation? Radon gas, etc.

They are now talking about the radioactive nature of granite countertops.

From Reuters:
The government has located a total 50 radioactive sources in the disaster area, which is home to China's chief nuclear weapons research lab in Mianyang, as well as several secretive atomic sites, but no nuclear power stations.

"Thirty-five of the radiation sources have been recovered, and the location of another 15 has been confirmed, but they have not yet been recovered," Wu told a news conference in Beijing.

"Three are buried in rubble and another 12 are in dangerous buildings, which staff cannot go into," he added. "At present, tests from the scene show that there has yet to be an accidental release of radiation."

Per the NY Times:

North in an even more rugged and inaccessible region, nuclear experts said, China maintains a hidden complex of large tunnels in the side of a mountain where it stores nuclear arms.

“It’s very close to the epicenter,” said one specialist, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because, to the best of his knowledge, the exact location of the secret complex had never been publicly disclosed.

Hmmm. Epicenter of the quake is very close to their nuke weapons storage facility, weapons manufacture and R&D site

So the big question is: was it really a quake, or was it a "work accident"?

I seriously doubt that. For one...the quake lasted quite a long time. A nuclear explosion does cause seismic shockwaves, but they only last a few seconds.

Second, the number of aftershocks. If it were a nuclear accident, you'd think the initial explosion would've taken out ALL the bombs at one time. I don't think bombs would survive to explode on their own several days after the initial incident.

Lastly...even if it were a massive nuclear accident, for an explosion big enough to do that much damage over that HUGE of an area would produce a massive release of radiation...big enough that the governments of EVERY country downwind of the explosion would be stupid to not tell its citizens about, and quickly.

I remember the last major Chinese above-ground nuke test. The fallout from that did reach the US, and the news media practically screamed about radiation testing of milk products and foods. And, while I seriously have doubts about the intelligence of some agencies of the US government, if there was a public health concern dealing with a release of radiation from China, even THEY wouldn't be stupid enough to not let us know about it.

So...while it's an interesting premise for a conspiracy theory...I really don't believe it was a Chinese nuke accident.
