NEWARK, Del.- Police have arrested a suspect accused of shooting a man to death during a church fundraising event held Sunday in New Castle County.
Delaware State Police say that at around 7 p.m., troopers responded to a report of shots fired inside a banquet room at the Christiana Hilton on Continental Drive in Newark.
Officers who arrived on the scene found one male victim identified as 63-year-old Malak Michael, of Bear, Del., with a gun shot wound to his upper body. Also, several people were holding down a male subject that they identified as the shooting suspect.
Police say the officers took the suspect into custody and recovered two semi-automatic handguns.
The shooting victim was transported from the scene to Christiana Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
At least 80 witnesses were in the banquet room at the time of the shooting. According to police, these witnesses were all attending a church fundraiser to assist the Saint Mary Coptic Church in building a new facility in Elkton, Md.
According to police, the suspect, identified as 58-year-old Monir George of While Hall, Pa., was a member of the church and allegedly had some differences with the church, its policies and/or doctrine and the building of the new facility. Police say it were these differences that led to the shooting Sunday night.
Police say detectives learned that the victim in this case was targeted by George during the shooting as the victim, Malak Michael, was a church leader. Michael was the head of the committee to build the new church.
Through an examination of the crime scene, police determined that George fired three rounds before being subdued. According to police, George was armed with two semi-automatic handguns and 10 magazines consisting of 150 rounds of ammunition.
Investigators are still working to determine how George obtained these weapons and if he had a permit for them.
Early Monday morning police charged George with first-degree murder and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was ordered without bail to the Howard Young Correctional Institute.

Yikes. Some people take the building of a new facility really seriously.
Wow! All my church ever did was hold a bake sale!
I’m just guessing here, but I am speculating that they lean towards black liberation theology.
Doubtful. The Copts are very close to the earliest Church traditions.
Coptics? Uh, I doubt it.
Though, I admit that I thought it might have been a Coptic-Muslim confrontation.
Damn straight.
I wonder how she’s doing now?
A bleached blond with too much make-up?
duplicate thread.
***A bleached blond with too much make-up?***
Where have you been living? In a cave somewhere?

New Life Church security guard Jeanne Assam, 42, discusses her actions in halting gunman Matthew Murray’s Dec. 9 rampage, a day after the incident.
COLORADO SPRINGS Amid deafening cracks of gunfire, smoke-spewing canisters and the flight of thousands of New Life Church members, Jeanne Assam said she suddenly saw the hallways clear and a gunman come through the door.
“I took cover. I identified myself. I engaged him. I took him down,” the 42-year-old former law officer and volunteer church security guard said Monday at a news conference in the Colorado Springs police station.
“I just said, ‘Holy Spirit, be with me.’ I wasn’t even shaking,” Assam said. “I give the credit to God. I say this very humbly. God was with me.”

The real issue was what was going to be the color of the carpet.
And you know her name, oh knowledgeable one?
I have no idea why freepers take the time to search for and post a picture without giving the rest of us who actually lead lives away from pop culture and the internet an idea what the picture stands for. Unless it’s a method of gaining attention when others have to ask what their purpose was.
I would think just fine.
Glad this wasn't a response to yankeedame!
