MAYHEM IN HARLEM (NYC street violence is back in a big way)
NY Post ^ | 5/27/08 | TOM LIDDY, CRISTINA CARREGA and LARRY CELONA

Posted on 05/27/2008 3:13:00 AM PDT by jimbo123

Harlem erupted in mayhem last night when bullets began flying on jampacked streets across the neighborhood, sending panicked residents running for their lives.

Seven victims, all youths in their teens or early 20s, were wounded - including one who was in critical condition.

The other victims were stable.

The trouble began just after 10 p.m. at a Memorial Day barbecue in Marcus Garvey Park.

A witness said a fight over girls broke out and violence spread like wildfire. People were shot at four or more locations.

"First thing, I heard six shots, then I heard about another 12 shots another 10 minutes later," said a terrified Ellen Resnick, who had just arrived at her home on Lenox Avenue.

"I saw cops running in all directions after gangs of kids.

"There's tons of kids and millions of ambulances and police cars."

GANG GUNMAN SHOOTS 5 IN QUEENS
By SABRINA FORD

May 25, 2008 — A gunman shot five people on a busy Queens street yesterday, cops said.

Police believe the brazen attack to be gang related.

The shooting started at about 11:40 a.m. on Roosevelt Avenue between 80th and 81st streets.

All five victims were taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where only one man, a 45-year-old, was in serious condition with a chest wound, police said.

A 21-year-old whom police believed to be the intended victim of the barrage was in shot in his right side, but took cover by diving into a restaurant.

I heard guns are illegal in New York. How can there be any shooting?

But... But... But...

Guns are illegal in New York City.

Didn't anyone tell some of these Democrat voters that guns are illegal?

Is there not liberal outrage that some guns exist in New York City?

Maybe only criminals/thugs/gangs own guns in New York City and the rest of the people are now victims since they are NOT ALLOWED to carry guns...

This can happen anywhere.

The really interesting aspect of the story is the name of the Harlem resident who was quoted in the article, Ellen Resnick. Show me one woman from NYC named Ellen Resnick who is not Jewish and I'll eat my keyboard.

I was very familiar with the Harlem of the seventies and early eighties, the good the bad and the ugly. When the 'gentrification' talk started a few folks asked my advice on investing there (the housing stock is great and until recently very affordable for Manhattan).

My advice was always, don't do it. Every cluster of brownstones is and will always be hemmed in by the Projects. And although the majority living in the projects are law-abiding there will always be the predator element.

Once the city's fortunes start to reverse or a new drug hits the street all the Ellen Resnicks ("oh yes, we are hipper than thou - we live in HARLEM") will become low hanging fruit for the stick-up kids and b-boys. I suspect that Ms. Ellen Resnick is starting to regret her noble adventure in urban pioneering.

You know what they’ll say. That he reason guns exist in NYC is that they haven’t been outlawed in the rest of the country.

That it’s easy to buy guns elsewhere and bring them into NYC.

That only by outlawing and confiscating guns from every American can all Americans be safe.

That’s what they’ll say.

I just read the story from the NY Post.

Kids were wounded, no deaths.

Shot in the foot, shot in the thigh.

They are bad shots in addition to being idiots.

We need to keep them in NYC.

“I suspect that Ms. Ellen Resnick is starting to regret her noble adventure in urban pioneering.”

I bet you’re right about that.

What we’re looking at here is the Bloomberg effect. This increase in crime highlights the error of electing a liberal mayor after all the good work Guiliani did to fight crime in New York.

And regarding race, I think the comments above suggesting race is a factor are out of line. All people are equally predisposed to criminal behavior when liberal permissiveness in the context of established leftist policy allows it.

“Africa” has nothing to do with it.

I really don’t care if all of the gang bangers shoot each other, but it’s sad that people are forced to live in fear because of them. Perhaps if we just set up a big stadium and once a week they could have their shoot outs, and leave everyone else alone.

” All people are equally predisposed to criminal behavior”

I’ve heard that said, somehow I don’t believe it...

Kind of like saying all breeds of dogs are equally predisposed to biting you, and pit-bulls are fine animals as long as they are not mistreated.

You make an excellent point. We lived in the Capitol Hill area of Denver way back when we were first married. It was all we could afford, and we were country mice in the big city, had no idea what we were doing. I was terrified most of the time and didn't leave the apt. by myself. We only lived there a few months until we could find some place better.

I remember some of the wonderful old homes were being renovated and it looked like the neighborhoods were being *reclaimed*. I have always wondered how that turned out (we left Denver in 1978). It's sad too because many of those run down homes were lovely buildings and could have been stately and magnificent, but they had been cut up into multifamily dwellings and allowed to go to pot.

Problem is that she will move to another city and try again, hence bring this problem to someelses doorstep.

“All people are equally predisposed to criminal behavior when liberal permissiveness in the context of established leftist policy allows it.”

I’m calling BS on that one. The facts and numbers not only don’t bear that out, they prove otherwise. Oh it would be nice and “unoffensive” were that true but it’s not.

If that were true, then liberals would be right. There would a grand conspiracy among LEOs to frame and incarerate black people.

Harlem has changed so much in the past 5 years. You go out at night along 125th street and you see so many whites. The hipsters are buying up everything. And the locals are not happy about it.

I noticed a lot of white people along 125th last time I was there, too... but then some friends and I went to an amazing Senegalese restaurant down on 116th, and we were the only white people in sight walking down there. However, there’s still that Black Panther storefront on 125th, and someone a few blocks down is flying a Black-power flag... it sort of feels like some people there haven’t moved out of the 60’s or 70’s yet.

A Harlem story from February 1981....

I was looking for a guy, waiting for him to show up at a Max' Blue Angel, a spot on Lennox where he was known to hang.

Lennox is a boulevard, three lanes up, three lanes down separated by an island. I was in a doorway on the east side (the uptown side) of Lennox about three in the morning. The Hawk was out as they used to say (cold cutting wind out of the north).

I noticed a clearly agitated woman standing, stomping her feet to stay warm, in the shadows next to the door to Max'. This was across the Avenue, probably fifty yards away. She was 'typical' working class, not street, not working, not a player.

About ten minutes later a man and woman came out, obviously together. The woman was flashy in that late seventies ghetto way, high boots, polyester dress, short rabbit fur. The guy was a working stiff.

The woman who was waiting didn't say a word as she pulled a huge kitchen knife from her bag and went to work on the guy. She nailed him five or six times in the head and shoulders before he could react enough to get separation. She stood there glaring at him while he staggered.

The flashy girl disappeared. I don't know if she shape-shifted, vaporized, tele-ported or was just the fastest human alive but she was gone-gone.

The victim staggered out onto Lennox to the island, streams of blood down his head and face. I faded deeper into my own shadows.

His buddies flew out of Max' and flagged down a gypsy to take him to Harlem Hospital, about twelve blocks up Lennox.

Just as he was getting in the car the woman started swinging the blade again, chasing off the Samaritans. She was yelling (I quote) "Get the fu** offa him! He's my f***ing husband! I killed him, I'll take him to the f***ing hospital!"

They backed up. She got in the cab with him and that was that. I waited five minutes then slipped away.

All people are equally predisposed to criminal behavior when liberal permissiveness in the context of established leftist policy allows it.

That explains why, when a severe blizzard closes the Denver airport for several days and thousands of people are suddenly stranded there with nothing but the clothes on their backs, you get the same outcome as the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina, right?
