LONDON — Former President Jimmy Carter caused a stir over the weekend when he claimed that Israel possesses a nuclear arsenal of 150 weapons.
While experts have long maintained Israel has a nuclear arsenal, the Jewish state has refused to confirm or deny it.
Most estimates, many based on evidence leaked in 1986 by Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu, put the number of Israeli nuclear weapons at between 100 and 200. But other experts have said the number is as low as 60 or as high as 400.

“Most estimates” put the number between 100 and 200, and Carter comes out with 150. This means nothing other than that he, or an advisor, can take a simple, mean average.
We were in Israel when Mordechai was arrested at the Notre Dame Church/Hotel while having lunch.
I really wonder why he wasn’t still in jail..but he may be now. Anyone know?

As an ex president, Carter’s statements on this carry weight. It can be assumed he has (or has had) access to sensitive intelligence, which he has chosen to compromise

A year or more ago, Bibi Netanyahu said he thought Isreal should aknowledge that it is a nuclear power publicly, which means the nukes are there and they want the world to know, without the entanglements an official statement would generate. I’ve quit trying to understand what Carter’s motives are other than he’s just hopelessly confused. In any event, Israel’s having nukes is news to no one.

You've gotta be kidding. Think of the era in which he was President. I was in college, the internet hadn't been invented, Bill Gates was still working out of his garage and Macintosh was a kind of western raincoat. Anything he knew of any importance was obsolete inside of ten years, max. I seriously doubt that anybody in GW's administration gave him clearance above FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) that every citizen has. He might be getting raw data from his elite buddies in the CFR and T/C but that's all.

Carter is hopelessly demented. He belongs in a rubber room or in front of a firing squad for treason, IMO.
If Carter is disclosing sensitive intelligence information, he is breaking the law and should be prosecuted.
You think ex Presidents do not have access to consultants (such as Sandy Berger was for Clinton) who see (and make profits from) current US/world intelligence? As well as intelligence from the UN, French, Germans, and other agencies? Do you not think Jimmy Carter was given 20 and 30 year force projections when he was President, and updates at his request since then? The guy is getting briefed at State and probably other agencies every time he travels or returns, even if he is a traitorous antisemitic old POS. he still gets treated with the decorum and perks of a former President even if he doesn't return the honor.
Regardless of the accuracy of his statement it can be assumed by many in the US and outside the US, that he has inside information and street cred.
So again I say- who is he sending this message to, about Israeli nuc arsenal? And why? A warning to Iran? Apologia for Syria?

Of course, there is the interesting detail of what sort of nucs they might be...............the variety of what they have would be very interesting. I doubt they are all kiloton tactical stuff.
I think Jimmy Carter should strive for absolute accuracy in his statements. He should attempt to get into the Israeli nuclear weapon storehouse to do an actual count.
Preferably, he should try this at night disguised as a Palestinian Hamas fighter.
