When her neighbor's roosters and chickens persisted in running through her yard, G. Stone took matters into her own hands.
She marched next door and issued a warning: Do something about the uninvited guests or the birds "were going in my pot."
The incursions stopped. But Stone, a retired Los Angeles County librarian who lives northwest of Watts, shook her head in exasperation as she recalled the incident.
"I've lived here for 50 years," she said. "All of a sudden, there's an influx of chickens. You're not supposed to have chickens in the city."
For many, the image of South Los Angeles is that of a paved, parched, densely packed urban grid. But increasingly, it is also a place where untold numbers of barnyard animals -- chickens, roosters, goats, geese, ducks, pigs and even the odd pony -- are being tended in tiny backyard spaces

Third world indeed.
We had a chicken roaming our neighborhood.
It belonged to the house with 6 cars parked in front and 4 families living there.
She is a librarian. By default she is almost certainly a lib and favors unchecked immigration. Welcome to the effects of your political choices, now sit down and shut up and let Hector tend to his chickens.
They can’t keep them in the front yard because those are filled with cars for all the unlicensed occupants.
BTW..those aren’t chickens..they are fighting cocks.

Our big cities are going to ruin. People wonder why there are gated communities.
“People wonder why there are gated communities.”
To keep the chickens in?
I’ve been reading and hearing a lot lately about how with the fuel and food prices going up at the rate they are, we all need to start looking into driving less and raising our own food to supplement what we have to buy. Looks like these folks are on the forefront of trying to conserve and save energy.
Downtouwn L.A. is a dump!
She is obviously resisting multi culturalism, embrace the slide to Banana Republicanism that is happening in the US, it’s what’s good for you....
Not chickens...”yard pimps”.
No doubt. The Republicans not attacking illegal immigration is one of the greatest political blunders in the history of the party. If you go look at the comments to a ridiculous Geraldo Rivera post at Huffington Post, you'll see that even far-left liberals are against illegal immigration. Americans of every political persuasion are against illegal immigration; it's one of the few issues that people from all political sides agree on. But the idiot Republicans have ignored the people's will. It's a disgrace, and an idiotic one, politically.
More like welcome to the vision of Demolition Man. How long until fire, postal and bus services are cut into the hearts of these pesthole neighborhoods?
Just had to reply!Neighbors had untold amounts of chickens next door to my old shop. You could not eat them as the feed,as I was told, was for fighting cocks and was not good for human consumption..Hundreds of them and they would fly over the fence in my back yard. They were so hyper that when my dogs would get after them, they literally fell over and died from shock!~Without so much as a scratch on them.[I live in Tx.]
We bought the place next to us and during the cleaning process, discovered numerous syringes which I believe they used to shoot them up with something before a fight. They never laid eggs either.
“Wherever there are Mexicans, there is Mexico.”
My mother tells of people keeping backyard chickens in Nashville during the war. The way the economy’s going, I’m planning to build a coop in the expectation that the HOA will cave. I’m told that someone in the back of the subdivision has them now.
To keep the turd world out.

Do librarians believe in BB guns?
Reminds me of the scene in Blazing Saddles where they recalled fighting Richard Dix.
Laura Bush is a librarian.
I love these LA County Fair Commercials.

I'm in a semi-rural area. My neighbors have chickens. About once a week they bring us a dozen eggs. We buy them a bag of chicken feed now and then, save the egg containers, and share homemade jam.
I've had to herd the chickens back to their cage a time or two, and dodge the roosters a few times.
I LOVE where I live! And, I love my neighbors!
I work with Librarians.
One for eggs, and meat.
Another for roosters...
Is she a conservative?
Her husband isn’t.

To show the armadillo it could be done.
Well, the City of LA should tax the hell out of all chicken feed.
You forgot to mention that when they see something like this occur, they ask the pedophile to leave the Library, you know, instead of calling the cops. Information provacy and all...
It’s happening in central Texas, too.
Wherever there are Mexicans, there is Mexico.....
Exactomundo!.....
Have to have hybrid chickens to make fighting roosters. They look upon it as breeding stock.
Whatever they were giving them was not xanax!
Quote of the day. ;)
Uh-huh
[Rampant livestock] are simply part of the household, a hobby and a comfort for immigrants who hope to re-create a little piece of home in a faraway, foreign place.
Oh well, that's not so bad, then, is it? Now I'm wondering what the big deal is!
Officials vowed to keep studying the issue.
Phew! Thank God! Now we'll get something done!
And their argument about wanting no restrictions on information access is bunk. The NRA, the ACLU, and other organizations recently sued a public library system for blocking access to pro-2A websites. Some public libraries also block access to pro-life websites, AGW skeptic sites, and arbitrary websites they label as “hateful”. Because none of that stuff represents information, nor is it useful, obviously...
But gay gangbangs, child porn, and animal porn are just great! These forms of protected speech (even if the content is illegal) represent critical information for all library patrons, and access cannot be restricted a priori! That would be censorship, and censorship of publicly funded libraries would bring us closer to the theocratic Bush-Hitler police-state where homosexuals are turned into fuel for SUVs! True freedumb requires that all depraved content be made available to the public at taxpayer expense, without limitations.
There are also geese, peafowl, quail, guinea fowl, horses, and llamas in the area where houses are still valued at more than 400k or more.
Nearby, the community of Fair Oaks takes great pride in the fact they have beautiful chickens roaming the neighborhoods.
The presence of these feathered guys does not equate to the third world transplanted.
I watched the town I grew up in become a third world slum. My beautiful neighborhood now is slowly turning. We now have rentals with 3-4 families living in them.
Farm animals are against code where I live in the city. Where the people in the article live it is against the city code. These lots are not zoned for animals.
But of course I guess codes don’t matter if you are an illegal. All that matters is you get to bring in your goats, chickens, etc. on small lots not meant for animals. If it makes them feel more at home I guess it is worth it.
I grew up about 30 miles from there. My Uncle, who lived next door, had a bunch of chickens. When he was gone, I had to feed them and gather the eggs (while keeping an eye on the rooster). My Grandmother’s house, on the same property, was heated by a woodstove. When I got home from school, I had to check the wood and kindling boxes on the porch to make sure they were full. If not, I had to haul up wood and split kindling. Things have changed a lot...
We still have neighborhoods here within the city limits that are zoned for animals. They are 3/4 of an acre or acre lots though.
Heck if all my neighbors start getting chickens I will just get me a bunch too.
In California we can’t beat em so we might as well join them....that seems to be the philosophy anyway.
Being a liberal democrat is all fun and games until another democrat voting block gets on your nerves.
I'd love to know if this lady is dealing with this issue because her last name means rooster in German :)

I recommend Buff Orpingtons.
Everyone who grew up in L.A., raise your hand. Very few of you, I’m sure.
People have always kept chickens in the yard in L.A.
The L.A. Times author is no doubt a newcomer also. And maybe the complaining neighbors would prefer to hear rap “music” and gunfire.....
LOL.
Your comments will surely fall on deaf ears.
Oh wait, they already have...:)

I just found this website that lists different cities rules for keeping chickens.
http://home.centurytel.net/thecitychicken/chickenlaws.html
I am in Bakersfield and yes I did spend about 6 years of my childhood growing up in L.A. I lived in Glendale, Hollywood, and Tujunga. It is definitely not the same L.A.
