The person who wrote that apology letter should have written the text for the contest, at least he or she can spell.

Our intention was to provide an opportunity for traditional schools, many of which we know have trouble affording athletic equipment, to win equipment.Hah? Government schools get bazillions of dollars a year and they can't afford sports equipment???

"To HSLDA: We at SUBWAY restaurants place a high value on education, regardless of the setting, and have initiated a number of programs and promotions aimed at educating our youth in the areas of health and fitness. We sincerely apologize to anyone who feels excluded by our current essay contest. Our intention was to provide an opportunity for traditional schools, many of which we know have trouble affording athletic equipment, to win equipment. Our intent was certainly not to exclude homeschooled children from the opportunity to win prizes and benefit from better access to fitness equipment. To address the inadvertent limitation of our current contest and provide an opportunity for even more kids to improve their fitness, we will soon create an additional contest in which homeschooled students will be encouraged to participate. When the kids win, everyone wins!"

It's really not much of an apology.

It’s like a crazy person wrote this.
It wasn’t our intention to exclude anybody when we excluded homeschoolers, and we’re sorry if you feel excluded but you you still can’t enter.
When kids win everyone wins. Except homeschoolers of cource and again, we’re sorry about that.

I expect that the homeschoolers will outshine their government and privately schooled competitors.
But...homeschoolers will do that only if the judges can not know the school setting. I fully expect that Subway will do something very stupid and asking government teachers or Liberal/Marxist university professors to be the judges. ( no bias there) ( sarc.)

Within their apology:
Our intent was certainly not to exclude homeschooled children from the opportunity to win prizes and benefit from better access to fitness equipment
Within the contest rules:
Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted.
It seems that Subway is lying. Their intent was to exclude homeschoolers, as indicated in the contest rules. But now in their apology, they say that was not their intent.

Subway can go bugger themselves, anyway. Quiznos leaves them in the dust.It must be a regional thing liike many other chains.
We had a Quiznos in our area. We went there once. It was the worst sandwich ever. One bite and they went into the trash. We probably weren't the only one time customers. The place is now a drug store.
The Subway here is very good.

To: AZ .44 MAG
The rules clearly state: Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6.
No home schools will be accepted and in their "apology"...
"Our intent was certainly not to exclude homeschooled children from the opportunity to win prizes and benefit from better access to fitness equipment"
How do you reconcile those two statements?
Good Grief...

Some sources allow only excerpts of their content to be posted on FR.
In that case, a mere excerpt is what is provided.
The poster can elect to select which portion of the content to excerpt, or simply let the FR software do the excerpting. Doing the latter may or may not provide for the more relevant or pertinent info to be the portion excerpted.
In the event that no restriction is in place, one would think that the entire content from the source would be provided, but far too often, the poster elects the auto-edit function and a simple, needless excerpt is provided.
In your case, you provided no content from the source whatsoever.
What happens when the source takes the content off line?
All FR is left with is an excerpt that may or may not contain useful info, or in this case, nothing at all.
FR use to be a great research tool, but far too often older threads that have excerpted content are from sources that no longer exist.

If Quizno’s had a brain, they would dive into this with both feet. I would have a contest starting tomorrow that included home schoolers, maybe even exclusively home schoolers. I would have it for a cash reward for college tuition and make it loud and all over TV. You can't buy these types of opportunities.

I can't stand Subway or Quiznos. It's the bread. Their bread is soft and yucky on the outside.
Having been born and raised in Philly, I have simply have never adapted to anything that looks like a hoagie, but is a poor imitation. Ditto for cheesesteaks.
I like Jimmy Johns. Although the bread is not like a Philly hoagie or cheesesteak, I do like the crust's chewy texture.

Thanks for the info. Sorry for the newbie screw up.
Too late to post on main page. I think here’s what I should have posted with the original:
Our intent was certainly not to exclude homeschooled children from the opportunity to win prizes and benefit from better access to fitness equipment.
To address the inadvertent limitation of our current contest and provide an opportunity for even more kids to improve their fitness, we will soon create an additional contest in which homeschooled students will be encouraged to participate. When the kids win, everyone wins!

I thank that shows the meat in the story.

I agree, I still enjoy soft breads for certain foods, like PB+J’s however I really appreciate a good hearty bread with a nice chewy crust and a firmness to it overall.

Their so-called "apology" says, "Our intent was certainly not to exclude homeschooled children."
However, their contest rules said, and still say, even right now:
http://www.subwayfreshbuzz.com/kids/contest.aspx
"No home schools will be accepted."
Therefore, it was, and still is, their intent to exclude home schooled children.
