Raise your hand if you’re surprised! McClellan comes from a democratic family in Texas. His father was a lawyer with LBJ’s personal law firm, IIRC.

Considering that... why on earth was he a Republican President’s spokesperson ever?

Just dumb.

I am not surprised that Bush has made another bone headed decision to have the guy on his staff. Bush has had, and still has, several closet liberals on his staff, and many of them have come back to bite him in the ass. He never learns. He keeps thinking that he can make nice with these people. That has been one of his biggest mistakes that he continues to make time and time again.

All I remember about Marshmallow Boy as Press Secretary is that he seemed utterly flummoxed whenever the liberal press attacked.

But it's hard to defend what you don't believe in. And if you're press secretary and don't believe in the administration you serve, it's dishonest to stick around.

“McClellan comes from a democratic family in Texas.”

Sort of. His mom is a former Republican Railroad Commissioner, State Comptroller, and independent candidate for governor.

From wikipedia:

“In her campaigns for school board, college board, and mayor, Strayhorn was not identified by partisan affiliation since those posts are elected on a nonpartisan basis. Strayhorn was a Democrat until the mid-1980s; she served as Democratic nominee Walter Mondale’s campaign chair in Travis County during the 1984 presidential election. Strayhorn switched parties and became a Republican in 1986, when she was the GOP nominee for the U.S. House seat held by J. J. Pickle.”

In other words, she’s a political whore. Guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

McClellan comes from a Democratic family in Texas. His father was a lawyer with LBJ's personal law firm, IIRC.

I would doubt that this is as big a part of the story as you people are making it out to be.

His father, Barr McClellan, did work as a young lawyer for the Austin, TX based law firm headed by Ed Clark, who was possibly LBJ's most trusted confidant. But the elder McClellan was a junior guy there, and was not really part of the inner circle at the firm. He eventually left the firm after a dispute with Clark, suspecting from the buzz there that there was nefarious business going on between the firm and LBJ for many years.

Barr McClellan made a splash in 2003 with the publication of the book "Blood, Money and Power", which made a strong argument for LBJ's involvement in plotting the JFK assassination. It also links LBJ to a couple of previous politically motivated murders. IIRC, it is based on McClellan's personal experiences with Clark's firm and extensive independent research by the author. It so happened that his son Scott was Bush WH press secretary at the time his father's book came out. When asked about it, Scott simply declined comment.

Yes, Barr McClellan was a Democrat back in the 60s and early 70s, but so was just about anyone who was anybody in the state of Texas at the time. I wouldn't be certain that he's still a Democrat today, in view of his experiences with Clark and with LBJ himself in the latter's final days. BTW, Barr McClellen now lives in Mississippi.

In the meantime, Scott McClellan has been reported to be estranged from his father for quite some time. His parents divorced many years ago, and Scott's mother once held an appointed position in Texas state government under a GOP state administration. So I believe his mother is a Republican.
