A new Survey USA poll in Michigan gives strong support to John McCain adding Mitt Romney to the ticket if his major aim is to win Michigan.
McCain leads Obama 41%-37% head-to-head. But when Romney is added to the ticket, McCain-Romney defeat every possible Democratic ticket surveyed: (see graphic)
Michigan is a "must-win" state for Democrats. If McCain could pick it off, he would be well on his way to victory.

If McCain can win Michigan, and possibly OH and PA from the looks of it, it’s O-V-E-R for Barack.
I LOVE MITT. gotta get this in before the bashers start.
So what? Hucksterbee would help him win Arkasas and maybe some other states in the south.
You've got a little time... I expect most of them will be busy at the FLDS threads for a little bit. ;-)
Just Michigan..
Not the country...
Not the US...
Romney “won” Michigan by promising jobs and money that he could not deliver...
He did not win Tennessee...
Nor did McCain...
Where’s a survey of the WHOLE country ????
Where those polled given any kind of choice ???
Or were the results slanted ????
Where’s a survey that includes ALL the GOP candidates who ran for POTUS ????
Now, that would be interesting...
And a poll of all the VP contenders on the short list ???
The long list ????
And a poll that asks...Who would you like to see on the ballot as the VP candidate ???
He’ll win the South either way.
I LOVE Harrison Ford...
But I wouldnt want him as POTUS or VP...
(Got to get this in before the Indy bashers get here)
Ah details....
Romney makes the most sense from an EV standpoint. Pulls Michigan solidly in play, probably helps a little in NH, and Romney has the economic sense and “youth” (although he’s only 11 years younger than McCain) all in one.
Huckabee doesn’t help electorally.
I don’t know I’m skeptical. Romney couldn’t even deliver votes when he was spending vast amounts of his fortune. I don’t really see Romney being able to deliver anything except the promise of another RINO on the ticket.

Who mentioned Huckabee...???????????
FOCUS...the thread is about Romney...
Romney is an old man too...
He is waaaaaaaay past “youth”
And has little merit to be POTUS or VP
As a ONE term liberal Gov, he has little experience..
It’s hard to believe McCain is winning MI at this point of time by 4 points. SurveyUSA is quite a reliable polling firm, but they have come up with some weird #s recently.
Dodd, Huckabee want answers on McClellan charges ("Plamegate")
He just can't keep his danged mouth shut, he's an embarrassment
In My opinion he was an embarrassment throughout the entire primary season. He ruined the field for any viable conservative and as McCain's stalking horse that's exactly wht he was supposed to do. He's a vile, vain, greedy little cretin who was bought and paid for by McCain.
He was probably promised the number 2 slot but blew it last week at the NRA convention because as you say, "He just can't keep his danged mouth shut, he's an embarrassment."

Mitt seems to be a very very moral person without the insanity of a carter. I dont care how many planets he populates in his next life. I wouldnt mind being one of his wives.
According to everything I have learned about the whole LDS bit, (something BTW I purposefully stayed out off during the campaign, Mitt had enough political issues to skewer him with real conservatives), you have a real shot with him...
BTW that is still one of my favorite "Mitten" posts from back when Mitt screwed up the primaries for us...
Mitt, you are a good guy, really you are, but please just stand down, if you want to help give money, support real Conservatives or whatever, but just stand back out of the way on the national stage...
Of course he would help in MI...
He promised that old, dead auto jobs will rise up
and walk again!
Truly one of the outstanding panders since Edwards
promised that Christopher Reeves would rise up
and walk, if he was elected.
Desperate people respond to false hope.
What gives you the right to write off MI as a lost cause?
The first step in improving a problem is believing something can be done.
Romney keeps social conservatives home while Huckabee mobilizes them. Without and enthused social conservative wing of the party, it is going to be very hard for McCain win.
Huckabee might pad the popular vote numbers, but he won’t win McCain any states he wouldn’t have otherwise won.
Hence the quotes around youth. Romney is 61, but he looks good for his age, and is a lot younger than McCain.
I wish it were Fred T., but Fred’s not interested in VP, McCain probably wouldn’t offer it to him, and Fred doesn’t do much electorally either.
What did Huck say at the NRA convention? I must have missed that.
But, there is more than just the Presidency to worry about. Most of the seats Republicans are losing are in the south and to socially-conservative Democrats. Putting Huckabee on the ticket could save many of those seats. Romney on the ticket may assure several more loses in southern congressional races.
I just don’t care for Huckabee. He’s not a conservative, he’s simply a pro-life liberal who supports gun rights. However, simpleton types love him even if he’s a socialist because he smiles and says “Jesus” a lot.
Why?
The voters have already spoken.
“What gives you the right to write off MI as a lost cause?
The first step in improving a problem is believing something can be done.”
What gives you the right to pretend to read minds? I said no
such thing.
McCain can win MI without Romney... without pandering like
Edwards.

Holy cow. You have GOT to see some of these numbers.
Mr. Romney is only 61 and has many, many, many years ahead of him (God willing). He has the most experience (public and private sectors) of a candidate that I have ever seen. Mr. Romney would definitely deliver Michigan and I think he could help my state of Ohio as well. Mr. McCain would be very wise to pick Mr. Romney as his VP and let him focus on the economy. No better VP pick.
They are awesome numbers, Mr. Bates. I believe that Mr. Romney would be of some help to my state of Ohio as well.
I like Mitt, too. He is bright and articulate.
The thing that’s hard to believe is that wasn’t FDR 61 when he died of an illness?
FDR was 63 when he passed away (I had to check Wickipedia). Indeed. Today 61 is young. That’s how far the medical system has come. Thank God.
Every time I think I’ve made up my mind to vote McCain he starts talking like Al Gore on the “man made global warming bullshit” and I back away.
You’re welcome! :-)
Romney would be of help in NH, Colorado, and Nevada as well.
Romney is very rich and could help out in fundraising. However, he has high negatives. People view Romney as lying opportunist. All of Romney’s gaffes in the primary would take center stage - from Romney claiming to be a life long hunter to his dad being great friends with Dr. King. I fear Romney’s negatives would stick to McCain.
If the West needs to be won, then Sarah Palin would be great. She fishes and is a life long member of the NRA. She would be great in appealing to Western voters.
LOL
Biden said those same words about Obama. Are you going to endorse him, too?
The Morning RoundupWashington Examiner's Bill Sammon, on McCain's VP choices: "Huckabee brings pluses and minuses to the equation. He's a very likeable, a great debater kind-of-a-guy. But he also has the potential as we saw last week...sometimes his humor becomes a problem as well. So I'm not sure I'd put Huckabee at the top of the list. ... Rob Portman is a straight arrow, sort of a boy scout kind of a guy, not controversial. He also could help carry Ohio. Ohio is a crucial swing state. Whereas Charlie Crist...I think Barack Obama is already going to lose Florida...so why bother with that? Why not go for Ohio, which is much more important to McCain?"

Keeping my mouth firmly shut.
Notice that in the initial poll the undecided vote is 22%. The increasing margins of the McCain-Romney ticket are coming from Obama's support, not from the undecided. Logically, why would an Obama supporter abandon him when a solid Democrat like Biden is added to the ticket? Or a when a darling of the feminist movement like Sebelius is added? Or when a well-respected progressive like Richardson is added? Maybe, I could see these VP possibilities not adding support to the ticket. But subtracting support? No way.
I think what Survey USA has done with their methodology is unintentionally isolate a Romney versus Democrat VP head-on-head match up rather than actually capture the effects of a joint ticket. If so, these margins will be transitory for two reasons. First, Romney claims Michigan as his "home state", recently campaigned heavily in the state, and has a much higher name recognition. As any of these Democrat VP candidates become better known in Michigan, the margins will close. Second, the election is primarily about the top of the ticket. In November, few voters will decide based on the VP. The poll seems to draw this secondary issue to the forefront as if it is the primary determinant in how the person plans to vote.
If McCain picks Romney for his VP candidate, I hope it is for reasons other than this poll. I don't think these poll results reflect what would actually happen in the fall. I've thought that McCain has a good chance of carrying Michigan without Romney but either with or without Romney the margin will be close.
Mr. McCain can never, never, ever win Michigan.
This state is filled with welfare slobs, left wing liars, crooked businesses, thieving quacks, shyster lawyers, communist politicians, fascist bureaucrats and really, really stupid people.
Michigan is a filthy, good-for-nothing left wing shithole.
Mr. McCain can better spend his money in Wisconsin and try winning there.
