Globally Warm Schools

by: Santiago Leon, May 28, 2008

As Global Warming becomes an issue in people’s lives, it has also become part of school’s curricula.

I recently learned that my boss’s son had an assignment and quiz in his Spanish class on Global Warming. In many of the questions students had to translate sentences from Spanish to English but with a Global Warming theme.

They even had to watch Al Gore’s movie, “Inconvenient Truth,” which has been a part of several school courses.

Teaching Global Warming in schools is widespread across the nation, especially providing materials like Gore’s film, argued Dr. Arthur Robinson of the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine, who gathered signatures of about 30,000 scientists who argue against the alarmism over Global Warming.

In the state of California, a bill was passed that will require “climate change” to be among the science topics that all California public school students are taught. A final decision is still pending from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The measure would also mandate that future science textbooks approved for California public schools include climate change as a topic to be examined.

In many school districts, not only are textbooks being provided, but Gore’s movie as well. In Ontario, Canada, the Halton District School Board has made An Inconvenient Truth available at schools and as an educational resource.

At a school in Vermont, a middle school math teacher used a portion of Al Gore’s documentary to illustrate linear equations. In the same school, an English teacher used the movie to spark opinion writing.

The film has also been made available as an educational resource in Argentina and other Latin American countries.

It will be also in the science curriculum for fourth and sixth-year students in Scotland...

This is nothing new. My son graduated three years ago from high school (2005), and I had been giving him daily deprogrammings after school for twelve years prior to that.

It has got to the point that the longer you are in school, the less educated you are.

The whole edifice is coming down around us. Public education is badly broken, and our education professionals must bear a large part of the blame. If you’re an education professional, you probably know even better than I do that its worse even than I think.

I have found this to be true. Teachers get their feelings hurt if you badmouth public education, because they care about it and they feel like they are doing the best they can. But if I shut up and just let them talk, I always find out that however bad I thought it was, its worse.

They should also be made to watch Reefer Madness so they can understand the dangers of marihuana. The scientific basis for both movies is comparable.

As a public school math teacher, I use it too - as an example to explain the importance of critical thinking and careful analysis. I hope that most responsible parents will notice when their children's teachers are adding inaccurate statements or interpretations to the curriculum, and that they will correct any errors at home as soon as they happen. Whether the teacher includes the "Hate America First" perspective on history, a blanket acceptance of the "An Inconvenient Assertion" version of science, or the "Political Correctness fixes for God's Oopsies" view of values, it's our job as parents to make sure our kids are learning both the truth and positive values. [Besides - it's fun to get that call from a teacher in left field after putting a lesson on sexual orientation diversity in the proper context. I imagine the activists would back way off and start teaching content instead of indoctrinating our children if each inappropraite lesson got a strong correction at home.]
