Dior Drops Actress for China Remark
The New York Times ^ | May 30, 2008 | David Jolly

Christian Dior, the French fashion brand, has become the latest global company to learn a hard lesson about the danger of offending Chinese sensitivities.

Facing the possibility of a boycott of its products, the luxury company said Thursday that it had dropped the American actress Sharon Stone from its advertising in China after she suggested last week that the recent earthquakes in Sichuan Province were karmic retribution for Beijing’s treatment of Tibet.

Good for Dior. Ms. Stone is seriously deranged if she thinks all those innocent little children killed and maimed when their schools collapsed were getting “karmic retribution” for anything. Very few of the people killed and injured in the earthquakes had anything to do with the repression of the Tibetan. I haven’t heard of a single senior government official sustaining so much as a scratch.

But, this is the world where faux-conservatives and un-American GOPers would rather ship a job to COMMUNIST CHINA than hire an American.

I believe she prefers "carpet" these days.

She is listed as the 2nd highest IQ in Hollywood at 154 (James Woods' is supposed to be 174). Just goes to show that I.Q. is merely an indicator of capacity (if anything at all) not function.

She's supposed to be a member of MENSA. I was going to join, back when I was young and arrogant, but a friend of mine who was a member told me that it was full of arrogant a-holes who were very boring. Looks like he was correct, judging by Stone.

What amuses me is how little play this got with the MSM. She supports Obama. If some Christian notable, like Pat Robertson, had said this was "God's retribution" it would have been plastered all over the newspaper and the television screen, joked about extensively by Leno and the rest of the late night losers, and great care would have been taken to link him to the Republican party.

If she had said that the recent tornado’s were America’s karma for global warming or the Iraq war, the world would have cheered, and Dior would have given her a raise.

In April, the French retailer Carrefour was the focus of protests after disturbances at the Olympic torch relay in Paris, when pro-Tibetan demonstrators lunged at a Chinese torch-bearer in a wheelchair. That image, quickly available on video-sharing Web sites, set off calls for a boycott of the company. Tempers calmed, but only after the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, dispatched an aide to soothe relations.

Let's correct the propaganda that the NYTs is promoting here.

Agents Provocateur? ["Tibetan supporter" who attacked torch bearer may be Chinese agent]

Attack on an American volunteer by anti-Carrefour mob in Zhuzhou, Hunan
"The cab driver was shouting at him to get out. Then they started hitting the car.
The crowd was shouting "kill him! kill the Frenchman."" (he was actually an American but small difference to a government hired mob)

Fifty year old actresses whose careers were mostly based on looks are old and have outlived their usefulness. A lot of young girls probably barely remember Sharon Stone, so she may not have been doing much for Dior’s sales or their demographics. She was only really a star who could sell tickets for a brief period around 1992-94. That was quite a long while ago now. Afterwards, her films failed commercially. And her fan base was male. “Basic Instinct,” while not without its merits, is not the kind of movie that very many women would care to sit through more than once, if that.

Bucko, I have no concern whatsoever about her career. I never did.

I just think it was a thoughtless comment to make - that 50 is “OLD”, as there are some very good posters on this forum who are way over 50.

Now, you go have a good evening, whipper-snapper. ;-)

Stone is a little geriatric to be a “sex symbol” actress/spokesmodel

There are careers that one does age out of

Basic Instinct 2 is proof in this case

She is out at Dior, but maybe the good people at Sensodent could use her services

Some old people don’t want to be reminded about how “advanced in life” and yes, old, they are.

That doesn’t make it appropriate or a good idea for prehistoric, rapidly aging, washed up actresses to appear in advertisements of products not meant for the retired crowd.

Sharon Stone wearing a Dior whatever might look youthful to a 65-year-old, but I doubt that is what Dior is going for. Bad marketing. Not to mention that she is crazy.

What she said was probably just an excuse for them. You want a young image for a luxury brand.

She can be the killer’s mom on some Law & Order or whatever.

How old are you? So all the women I posted ought to not play sexy roles? So you don’t like Sharon Stone...But you don’t have to lump all women 50 as OLD! I am 50 & you wouldn’t know it. I am sure Sharon Stone could care less what you or I think anyway.....Why would she? As for Dior....I am sure they want the business of both young & old. Money is money.

They want the business of old & young, but when a woman buys an overpriced luxury item, she doesn’t do it to make herself seem her age or older, or make herself look like someone’s rich great aunt

Models tend to be young for good reason

Some people make a conscious decision not to be polite to guests at a gathering, and choose instead to insult and degrade others.

I think it must be kind of a 'macho' thing - some guys feel real big when they insult women, and even bigger as they continue with their degrading remarks.

Do those actresses play sexy roles?

Hardly at all for years.

Because who would invest good money in that? It is expensive to make a movie and the idea of elderly sex does not have or require a big audience

You don’t like older women playing roles that they are picked for too bad. Don’t go to their movies. Personally I don’t care what Sharon Stone does with her life. However 50 is not old & I stand by my first comment. Rude, Crude & lacking in manners newbie. Have a very nice night, its been interesting....& amusing. ~Pandora~

I teach college students. I always get a terrific response from them when I tell them that I met a hot young babe over the weekend. “Not a day over fifty-one, or maybe fifty-two” I tell them.

Sometimes it takes them a few seconds to wrap their minds around what I've said. Last semester I had a very attractive young lady in one of my classes. I finally told her that she was, in fact, very lovely. I told her she had great genes, and then I asked her if her mother happened to be single. When she said yes... I asked about her grandmother!

Actually, we have a lot of laughs in my classes.

BJ get over it...She doesn't care what you think....However I stand by the fact that there are many very good looking women over 50 yrs old. If you don't agree thats ok. Some are fine actresses too. I really don't understand your thing about 50 & aging. I believe in aging gracefully myself. I wouldn't have plastic surgery but thats me. Maybe when you get older you will be so obsessed with age & your looks you might want to consider it though. Many guys are into you know & hair transplants too. Night & sweet dreams...~Pandora~

Thats a good one. Many times I go out with my husband & he will leave me alone & younger guys come on to me quite often. When I say I am a grandma that doesn’t even bother them until they see my husband. My grandmother never had a wrinkle on her face & I don’t either. It is the genes. I think the actresses I mentioned are still sexy. I think the way you act & your attitude on life keep you looking & feeling younger too.
