Police said a man who grabbed a woman and her 3-year-old daughter in an elevator at a Bronx apartment building has been shot and killed by the woman's husband, an off-duty officer.

A man followed the 30-year-old woman and her daughter into the elevator at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.

The woman and her child got off on the third floor and the man followed them.

Police said the man grabbed the woman and her daughter from behind as they were getting out and showed a gun.

The woman screamed, alerting the off-duty officer, who ran to her aid, authorities said.

Police said the off-duty officer shot the man in the torso. The man ran off, collapsed outside and died in the hospital early Sunday, News 4 New York has learned.

The officer was taken to the hospital to be treated for trauma, authorities said.

The mother suffered minor injuries to her wrist but the child is OK, authorities said.

Let us hope that this doesn't get turned around, such that the officer gets in trouble for defending his family. It would be "nice" if the perp turns out to have a record of mugging people, for example, and perhaps was brandishing a firearm he wasn't permitted to have by law.

Given what (little) we know so far, good for the office. One less mugger on the streets.

I think it is sinful that cops can carry while they are off duty. Not only did he draw and fire his weapon to protect his wife, he killed the poor mugger. This woman should have become a crime victim the same as any other civilian in NYC would have.

Why could he not have shot him in the leg? Or the arm? Or tasered him? This needs further examination, particularly if the suspect was a person of color and the officer a person of pallor.

Thank goodness that the woman was married to a cop. If hubby was a plain old ordinary citizen, she and her daughter would have been SOL.

Well, I guess it’s good that at least off-duty cops can carry.

I though from the article that the man was mugging his own wife. That would have been sad if they had been goofing around, acting silly.

"Why could he not have shot him in the leg?"

A man who deserves to be shot, is worth killing.

The story reported the perp was armed, why wound him and thus allow the perp to get off a shot of his own?

Secondarily -- if the perp is dead, the ONLY story describing the events is YOUR story.

It works folks, “Fight Crime, Shoot First.” A very good ending to the story. One less perp to coddle with three hots and a cot.

Why could he not have shot him in the leg?

Are you kidding? Have you ever shot a pistol before? Do you have any idea how difficult it is to accurately aim a pistol? The purpose of shooting an assailant is to stop him immediately and keep him from responding. A shot aimed at a leg is likely to miss and just warn the robber. The whole idea is to hit the robber in a vital area that makes it impossible for him to continue the assault or return fire.

off duty officers don’t, as a rule, carry tasers. When in a situation with an armed perp you don’t shot to wound, you shoot to stop the subject as quickly as possible...you do the math.
