TAMPA, Fla. -- A giant Confederate battle flag -- believed to be the world's largest -- may soon be flying near a Tampa highway intersection.
A Confederate heritage group called the Sons of Confederate Veterans plans to fly the flag that measures 30 feet tall and 50 feet wide.
The group said it expects to have its flag in place by 2009.
"I'm surprised that they would allow something like this to go on in Hillsborough County," county NAACP President Curtis Stokes told the St. Petersburg Times.
The group has building permits but still needs $30,000 to complete the project, which will be located on private property at the intersection of Interstates 4 and 75.
Organizers said the flag is not a racist statement but a piece of history.
They hope it encourages people to stop and see a monument to Confederate soldiers that they plan to build.

It was a battle flag and the flag of a break-away number of States. It had nothing to do with slavery. If you want to assign slavery to a flag, then look to the various Islamic countries’ flags. Many of these countries still condone and even practice slavery within their borders.

intersection of Interstates 4 and 75.As a Tampa resident, for those not in the know, the intersection of I-4 and I-75 is right smack in the middle of the "urban" area of Tampa.
Imagine waking up everyday in your "hood" and seeing the main object of oppression, at least that's their perception, flying high and proud !!!
I think this project will be throughly objected too and probably deep sixed
Too bad, I'd like to see it everyday just to piss of the liberals

I grew up in Tampa; missing by that much constitutes blindness (joking). Seriously, if it is at I-75 and I-4, there should be no concern. Last time I was in Tampa, traffic moved pretty fast and there wasn’t much but armadillos.

I've been here for 17 years and I must be blind to miss it by that much :)
Don't know how long you have been gone, but they redid malfunction junction, it was an absolute nightmare.
For some unknown reason which is beyond any reasonable human thought process, they widened all the lanes merging into malfunction junction BEFORE they widened the intersection. So you had something like eight lanes of traffic merging into two lanes under construction

And this surprises you? That is SOP for road work EVERYWHERE in the country. Bridges to nowhere, the Big Dig, roads paid by the curve, etc.
I know of only ONE project that was ever handled correctly - in West Virginia, of all places.
Seems the road between Parkersburg and Chemical Row collapsed and washed away one day. A new road had to built - and fast. The contractor worked on a performance bid - finish early and you get more money. Finish late and you get penalized.
He finished the road in six months, working 24/7, blasting through granite most of the way and spanning a quarter mile long, 200 foot deep chasm. That was his first performance contract, but not his last!

World's Largest American Flag (confederate and union combo) What is a "World's Largest American Flag (confederate and union combo)" ?
Half U.S., half Confederate?
To: stainlessbanner; All
as usual, the media got it DEAD WRONG!
the largest KNOWN CSA flag belongs to the University of Mississippi marching BAND & USED TO BE taken onto the football field by the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity at all the home games!
the flag was about 30x50 YARDS in size & weighed over 600 POUNDS.
the world's largest TEXAS FLAG belongs to the University of TX at Austin's LONGHORN BAND. it is the same size/weight as the Ole Miss flag (fwiw, i was "a flag wrangler" in Austin in 1965, so i KNOW how big/heavy the flags are. on several occasions, i, at about 190 pounds, got "picked up" by the wind, while holding the lower corner & "bounced about".)

I'll answer you as if you really don't know.
This thread is about the Confederate Flag.
It was the flag of the south in the Civil war.
My term "combo" was meant figuratively to convey that the South and the North had combined to make one Nation (United) and thus the United States Flag was a combination of two formerly warring factions.
That would be the Union and the Confederacy "comboed"
So now there is no "Half U.S., half Confederate", just one United States of America.
Hope that clears up any confusion.

- Designed with 13 stars and 13 stripes to represent the 13 colonies (Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island)
- Since Congress did not specify dimensions, proportions, shapes or star patterns, flags varied dramatically
- Legend says that Betsy Ross designed and sewed the first American flag, but most historians disagree
- The person who sewed the first flag is unknown, but the designer is thought to be Francis Hopkinson
- The Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution of 1777 on June 14, 1777 making the Betsy Ross flag official
- This date is now celebrated annually as Flag Day

- Driver, who lived in Tennessee, was afraid the flag would be seized by Confederate forces, so he hid the flag between layers of his comforter
