A Fourth-grader at Toy Town Elementary School in Winchendon, MA was suspended for five days for showing his friends an empty shell casing to some friends at lunch. According to the NRA-ILA (http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Read.aspx?ID=3975), Bradley Geslak had been given the casing from a blank fired during Memorial Day by a US veteren. He was given two, one of which he gave to his grandfather, also a veteren.
He was showing his souvenier off to some friends during lunch when a teacher confiscated the casing and called the boys mother to take him home. Hes also been told he wont be getting the very dangerous shell casing back.

Another day, another public school scandal...
“Veteran.” “Souvenir.” Spell-check can be our friend.
Dumb school.
Can the student send the teacher home for five days, for bringing dangerous ideology into the classroom?
Oh yeah...lady? We might have to go to court but you would return his casing.
I remember when I was a little boy somebody came back from the war and gave me an artillery shell casing of some sort. I don’t have it now, but as I recall, it must have been at least several inches in diameter and quite long—kind of like a tall ashtray.
Things have really gone downhill since then in this culture of ours. These morons wouldn’t know the difference between a cool souvenir and something dangerous if it bit them on the nose.
I wonder what they would have made of my pineapple grenade, complete with everything but the explosives inside?
But a Trojan is no problem.
4th grader. Small piece of brass (presumably) which was a blank round to begin with. Suspended.
Okay.
Next, MA State Police will go arrest the veteran and the grandpa.
I must be dreamin'.
Kid, get your Gramps, and head for the Principal’s office. Give ‘em Hell, Grandpa!
This type of thing makes me shudder in thinking about what our country is coming to.
The clear message is stay out of Massachuttes. Do not venture there. Beware!!
Sadly it’s just not public schools anymore...
Correct me if I am wrong here, but isn’t a shell casing nothing more than a cylindrical piece of metal? The scissors the boy uses in art class are more dangerous!!
When I was a kid we used empty shells for whistles. Some made pretty good ones- or at least we thought so.
This is incredibly wrong. I would sue to get that shell back if I had to, and take my child out of that ignorant school.
Right on, Tammy8! My dad had a whole draw of hundreds of empty 30-30 shells when I was a kid. I whistled with them and played with them all day. Good memories...or so I thought....maybe I am traumatized by the violent shell to this very day. Anyhow, when I grew up, I reloaded those shells for my own gun.
Recruit: “No brass or ammo, Maam.”
vaudine
The public school education system is, in general, dumbing down America! There may be exceptions, but damn few!
When I was in high school I had gave a .38 casing to a friend who needed to cap a leaking a vacuum line on his car.. just the everyday things we did not so long ago would have us in jail today. There was a army/navy store only a block away where you could buy practice grenads and machetes for a few dollars.
A piece of brass is very dangerous???
I don't live in Mass any more and have not for a long time. This is the state that produced strong and brave minutemen and was really the beginning of liberty and independence for the entire country. This is a state which sent so many strong and brave men to preserve the union and to abolish slavery. This is a state which sent so many strong and brave men to Europe and the Pacific to preserve our way of life during the World Wars against Naziism, Fascism, and Imperialism, and during the Cold War against Communism and Totalitarianism. This situation which happened to this young boy tells me that even though we won all the battles, we lost the war. The Nazis, the fascists, the international imperialists, the communists, and the totalitarians are the winners. I hope the parents, and freedom lovers in Massachusetts fight back. It would be wonderful to see Massachusetts become great again.
Good grief.
Heck, kids used to take guns to school and go hunting after school and nobody got their panties in a twist.
As a (very bad) Boy Scout, we used to go camping and throw handfuls of .22 cartridges into the campfire and then run and jump behind a mound or into a ditch.
Under the current rules, me and my rowdy, no good friends would all be suspended or in jail for our behavior.
Now, I'm a responsible gun owner and my dad taught me gun safety with my first single shot .20 ga. shotgun. Well except for a few stupid boyhood lapses.
People sure are sensitive these days.
I found a 'spent' Trojan on my lawn the other day. Thank God I am moving.
From the various spelling errors, it is apparent that the author is a product of our public education system. Boy, I really hate reading articles written in such a shoddy illiterate manner.
Teachers are apparently the shock troops on the front line of destroying our country with socialism and an ethic of “good enough”.
we used to hunt for them after the Memorial Day assembly, which included a 21-gun salute.
Guess they don't do that anymore, hunh?
Oh, come on guys! Don’t you get it? If you don’t let children see a shell casing, then there is no such thing as a gun. This is the same thing ostriches do and it works for them, right?
I use to give ‘em to my kids to play with all the time....they took them to school too.

This town needs an enema
Same here. On my street, there was always a parade on Memorial day, and the firing squad always seemed to fire their slaute in front of my house. Getting those shell casings were a treat.
Now that even saying the word “gun” will get you in trouble, it should come as no surprise that this will happen. The boy should have wrapped a condom on it.
Spell check police again......who cares
Ya forgot this part.....

I hadn't remembered that until you said it, but we did the same thing! 30-30 shells IIRC. I wonder what kind of trouble a kid would get into if he brought a rabbit's foot to show and tell. A PETA member teacher would have a coronary. What have things come to these days?
I feel bad for this kid who was obviously proud of his souvenir.
Separates us from the savages.
OH OK I hope you put some of that engerney into emailing the prinsaple
The government schools are building a powerful gun mystique and I think it all promotes unsupervised youthful craving for guns for the Power that they obviously have. Another reason (piled on top of many more than sufficient) to get your kids out of government schools.
There’s no percentage in agitating government school goons. Take the kids home and teach them to read and shoot, already.
Hey Gramps, get your grandkids the hell out of government school!
We need the aw jeez pic again
Loved your memories. They were much the same as those I have from growing up in small town Ohio. I share your dream for Massachusetts.
Me: Cool what is it 30mm?
Passenger: Close 25mm
Me: where did yout get it.
Passenger: Served on the CG Boutwell in the Gulf its a souvenir from there.
Me: Ok just a minute I have to talk to a Supv. ( I pulled the casing (regs required it) and found a Supv.I made sure the Supv in question was the ex-SF supv we had on duty)
Supv: Is it a live round or does it have an active primer?
Me: Of course not its an expended 25mm casing he is carrying as a souvenir from the Gulf.
Supv: return it to him its just a brass tube
Me: Ok no problem.
Me: Here is your “souvenir” back. Have a nice trip and sorry for the delay
Passenger: Thanks I was worried it may have been an issue.
Me: depends on who you talk to but not with me or the supervisor.
This is just to illustrate the TSA was not always populated with anal retentive types like the public schools seem to be.
No sympathy...anyone who really cares for their kids would not have them in a public school.
Sick
Hell - our town high school still had a rifle team in the 70s’
