Who says there's no humor in politics? Obama communications director Robert Gibbs went on ABC's This Week today, and in one of the best bits of deadpan comedy seen since Buster Keaton, actually said that Barack Obama's decision to quit the Trinity United Church of Christ was "not political."
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: In Philadelphia, just in April, Senator Obama said of Reverend Wright "I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community." Now he's cut all ties to Reverend Wright, and left his church. What is it a mistake to wait this long?
ROBERT GIBBS: No, George. I think obviously what Barack Obama made in the past few days is a deeply personal, not a political decision. And as you heard the reasoning, he made that decision for two reasons. One, even guest speakers that were at Trinity, their views were ascribed to him even though he didn't hold those views, and secondly, the members of Trinity couldn't do what members of a church do, and that is, sit in quiet reflection and worship God.

Well, that's true, sure enough. But how come Obama sat there for 20 years without noticing it, and brought his wife and family with him, too?
Now he says he doesn't plan to join any church before next January at the earliest. That doesn't sound like a very good plan for him or his family to sit (or kneel) in quiet reflection and worship the Christian God.

If decision not political, why did Obama provide this tidbit in answering a question about is “resignation” yesterday: “My suspicion at that time, and Michelle, I think, shared this concern, was that it was going to be very difficult to continue our membership there so long as I was running for president.”

I think this is the Obama Machine's big miscalculation (of the week): they think that Americans think that this is what "religion" is.
Truly, that may be so for about 70% of the people under 20, and about 30% of everyone else.
But most religious people just aren't that stupid, and they know that there's more to worshipping God than "sitting in quiet reflection."
In fact, some people worship God by bringing integrity into their work and relationships.
Maybe Obama could try that.

Couldn't think of a better two words to describe Obama's comments. Looks to me like if he wasn't running for President, he would stay a member. How long until he throws Mrs. Obama under the bus?
I love how all these liberal lunatics keep defending Trinity and saying things about how Obama was just there to worship God. What god are they worshipping? Can’t be Jesus of the Bible because that God would never condone the whooping and hollering that congregation at Trinity shows when hearing blatantly racist comments—real men and women of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, would be appalled and would get up and leave and never come back after hearing such things. The Bible teaches the opposite of what that church teaches and Obama going there for 20 years shows me that its ok with him and its what he believes as well, you don’t stay in a church 20 years if you don’t believe what they are teaching. I attended a church once that taught things I thought were way off from what I learned in the Bible and I walked out immediately and never went back again-—Obama has NO EXCUSE here except that he must believe what they were spewing. No way did he NOT KNOW what was going on there and what the church was all about, and people that give him the benefit of the doubt are either stupid or just going to vote for him at any cost, even if they found out he just killed someone.
