Mythbusters did a segment on windows down vs AC,you actually get better mileage with the windows up and the AC on. There is less wind resistance.

That is very much dependent on the vehicle you drive and the speed that you drive. In general though, yes, at highway speeds, using the air conditioning with windows up beats driving with the air off and windows down. Too bad most of today's cars have horrible ventilation systems or you could drive comfortably with the windows up using just the vents.

Turn off your lights!

Lights require electricity. Electricity is generated in the alternator. When the lights are on, the additional drag on the motor requires more gasoline. The effect is small, probably .1 to .2 mpg, but it's not zero.

Nice to hear all of your stories. I saw BS in this article, too.

I drive very little; I’m 10 minutes from work, and when I’m not working away from home, I’m home, working, LOL!

My car gets up to 60 MPH twice a day on the way to and from work. Maybe once a month I’m on the Interstate for something, and I drive around 70, keeping up with other traffic, while others still pass me.

I drive a Nissan Maxima 4-door sedan which I use more as a truck than a car. ;) 35 MPG on average, though a full fill-up is now costing me $50, so I spend about $100 on gas each month. I’ve never owned a new car, aside from a Dodge Colt I owned for 13 years, if you can even call that a “car,” LOL!

I’m not hurting due to gas prices. I haven’t changed my driving patterns or speed at all. I’m not hurting due to increased food prices. I’ve lived below my means for so long that it’s just second nature. I’ve pretty much ‘recession-proofed’ my whole life that way, and I lack for nothing.

It’s a good feeling. :)

My GTO gets 24mpg at 80mph, 25 at 70mph and 26 at 65mph.

Hmmmm...interesting.Although GTO's have never really been known for their fuel economy! ;-)

I have a late model Infiniti that,on the 70 mile I-90 trip that I often take to see my sister, gets 30MPG at 70MPH,33-34 MPG at 62MPH and gets close to 40MPG at 55.

Maybe it's because the computers that current cars have that the GTO doesn't.

Actually, it’s the new GTO :)

I think it’s great that at 70mph with my 400hp V8 I can get only 5mpg less than you do.

It’s in town that our rates probably diverge greatly. But that’s more of a problem with my foot than the car ;)
