Just the cricket: Eating insects is good for us and for the environment, scientists claim

It might be a while before they appear on the shelf at Tesco.

But scientists claim adding insects to our diet would be good for us and the environment.

Crunching into crickets or snacking on grilled caterpillar is apparently a means to a nutrient-rich diet that also helps reduce pests and puts less strain on the planet than eating conventional meat.

Some insects in their dried form are said to have twice the protein of raw meat and fish, while others are rich in unsaturated fat and contain important vitamins and minerals.

Experts believe they could one day be marketed as a healthy alternative to fatty snacks.

In most of Europe, bug-eating is largely restricted to the belated realisation that there has been an unwelcome addition to the salad.

It is common elsewhere, however, with some 1,700 species of bug eaten in 113 countries.

As a beekeeper, I'm aware there is a market for human consumption of honeybee larva.

Screw these a holes, I am not going to eat bugs. I refuse to be told to eat bugs. If they want to eat bugs.....no bugs....I am losin’ it.

I think the time is near for some serious cleaning out of this country.

I saw the "wares" on display in a Penn & Teller show. They were in China.

Rush Limbaugh mentioned this today, and said something about using energy to cook the the bugs.

My thought, when I heard about eating bugs, was a magnifying glass...

Heh. The translation of that is “Fast Car”. It is somewhat accurate because seeing that on my plate would be grounds for me to catch the fastest car out of there.

“Next they’ll be telling us to eat feces. Just give it time.” There was a documentary years ago where some scientists managed to make a flour from human poop - they made some brown biscuits, and readily admitted it worked but the baked items tasted like, well, you know.

Feed the bugs to the chickens, then eat the eggs the chickens lay.

That is your “free range” poultry farming. Ultimately a recycling plan.

Fly larva (maggots) are especially considered to be delicacies by the chickens. June Bugs are right up there too.

Being the top of the food chain means that some of the creatures below you can go to work on the real nasty critters.

yes, along with an assortment of other bugs..

I think discovery(?) channel had a special on once about british special forces applicants..first day in class, they were all seated and were invited to partake of a big plate of scrambled eggs, but no one was allowed to eat until told..once everyone had their plate, the instructor told them one ingredient was missing and told to men to line up at the serving table..the cook opened up a big pot and put a spoonful of worms on the eggs..the men were then expected to clear their plates..separates the men from the boys in a hurry..

I think that Californians should be required by law to eat bugs. That’ll cure them.

Not too far-fetched considering that some idiots drink urine for “health benefits”.

Newsflash, morons, your body is trying to get rid of it for a reason!
