WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton will concede Tuesday night that Barack Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, campaign officials said, effectively ending her bid to be the nation's first female president.
The former first lady will stop short of formally suspending or ending her race in her speech in New York City. She will pledge to continue to speak out on issues like health care. But for all intents and purposes, the two senior officials said, the campaign is over.
Most campaign staff will be let go and will be paid through June 15, said the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to divulge her plans.
The advisers said Clinton has made a strategic decision to not formally end her campaign, giving her leverage to negotiate with Obama on various matters including a possible vice presidential nomination for her. She also wants to press him on issues he should focus on in the fall, such as health care.

The fat lady sings.
I’ll believe it when I hear it.
Ding dong the witch is dead...
It’s been debunked by Clinton campaign. She’s bitter and ‘clinching’
Now let's defeat Nobama
She’s not going away. Watch for her to “suspend” her campaign. Now the dirty undermining of Bierock O’bama will begin in earnest from the Klinton camp.
Because we all remember what happened to RFK....
She is conceding but staying in.
Did girlfriend make a dealy-poo with Obama ???
VIP Clinton, perhaps ???
Errr VP Clinton...
Nope...now she’s staying in. I think her exact words were “I decided to stay in the race, right after I decided to drop out.”
I don’t get it. he don’t need her. what leverage does she have ?(Other than the Michelle tape :) ) Not supporting him ? a Rat, if it votes will vote Rat.
this is not over yet. The war for super delagates will go on, starting with the character assination of Michelle my Belle.
Her staff denies it, naturally.
The story is carefully worded- “concede that Obama has the delegate count”, but not “concede the primary fight”.
Maybe, if this is true, her statement will be, yes, he has more delegates, but let's take this to the convention for the real primary fight.
In any case, here is a link to an entire popcorn factory up for auction:
Let's pool our resources, buy it, and sell Freeper brand Political Popcorn for the general election.
The AP story is incorrect. Senator Clinton will not concede the nomination this evening,” the campaign said in a statement issued just minutes after the report was issued.
Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe told CNN Clinton was “absolutely not” conceding the campaign and said the AP report was completely incorrect.
“We’ve got to spend the next three days... working the superdelegates to convince them a) Hillary got more votes than anyone else and b) she is the best one to take on John McCain in the fall,” he said.
I'm calling BS. She doesn't have to stay in the race to accomplish this.
Here is an entire popcorn factory for sale. We should chip in and buy it, and sell Freeper Popcorn for the general.
I doubt that the story is true, it's too carefully worded. Since MSM loves Obama, it would not be beneath them to push a “she's conceding” story while the polls are open.
I note the careful wording- “conceding that he has the delegate count” is not “conceding the primary”.
Maybe the truth is that she will indeed say that he has the delegates, but will promise to go on to the convention for the real fight.
This has been so much fun to watch, it would be a shame if it were over.
She will never quit even in Denver she will say that there is a mistake or something like that. They will need a strait jacket for her and be taken away by the men with the white coats!I knew she never say die,she does not have it in her!
This is a DELIBERATE PLANTED STORY BY AP on the day when two more primaries are being held, to demoralize Hillary supporters.
By the time her disclaimer is out, AP’s ‘anonymous source’ bomb will have done its work. AP has been doing this for months.
But she said she’s in it to win it. She said she will be the nominee. Say it ain’t so Hillary. She cares too much about our country. Some people might think campaigns are all a game, but not our misty eyed Hillary. When she’s not target shooting and having a shot and a beer somewhere, she’s answering the phone at 3 a.m. and working on making America one giant village where we can all raise our children as a collective.
Or maybe she will say the road to the White House runs through Obama’s campaign.
I’m all ears to hear what she has to say.
What difference does this really make? Recognizing that Obama “has the delegates”, but only ‘suspending the campaign’? There are no more primaries fer Pete’s sake! She can put everything on Simmer until the convention. Ain’t nothing (overt) going to happen (from Hillary’s direction) until then anyway.
"There's no need to be snippy about this, Hillary."
The suspense is killing me.........
Hillary’s sneaky strategy is clear. She’s not formally ending or suspending her campaign. She’s just going dormant so that she can maintain control of her delegates and hang low over the summer in the hope that Obama will self destruct (perhaps via his wife Michelle) so that she can re-emerge as the Party’s savior at the convention if the opportunity presents itself.
A lot of what she does depends on Federal laws. If she concedes and just quits there are financial implications.
She will most likely sit out the election in November.
Looks like the MSM is trying to put a stake in the Clintons, and they’re fighting back.
Fouhy on Beth. She got in wrong again.
Once Obama has the deligates and Hillary concedes, Michelle Obama will not be seen or heard from ... stuffed into a upstairs closet untill she needs to be seen at the Convention! Count on it!
I Barak is the official nominee, they will be dancing in muslim countries...
somebody please post picture dancing with their rifles.
I dont know how!!! A celebration for Islam..not US.
So let me make sure I have this correct...
She is quitting before she decided to quit not quitting?
Notice that ALL of the stations are saying that she will not conede T O N I G H T!!! That may be right, but tomorrow is another day.
Just the media trying to keep everyone watching the news, LOL!
Looks like she’s hittin’ the sauce again...
having worked with publications, I will say where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.
I thought hubby lived in Harlem and Chelsea lived in England?
By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Barack Obama edged closer to capturing the Democratic presidential nomination on Tuesday amid a flurry of speculation that Hillary Clinton will quickly drop her White House bid.
The Clinton campaign quickly denied a report by The Associated Press that the New York senator would say on Tuesday night that Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination. "The AP story is incorrect. Senator Clinton will not concede the nomination this evening," the campaign said in a statement issued just minutes after the report was issued. Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe told CNN Clinton was "absolutely not" conceding the campaign and said the AP report was completely incorrect.
"We've got to spend the next three days... working the superdelegates to convince them a) Hillary got more votes than anyone else and b) she is the best one to take on John McCain in the fall," he said. With 31 delegates to the Democrats' August convention at stake, Democrats in South Dakota and Montana cast the final votes on Tuesday in the five-month state-by-state battle for the right to face Republican John McCain in November's presidential election. Obama needs fewer than 40 delegates to reach the 2,118 required to capture the nomination and become the first black presidential nominee of a major U.S. political party. The Illinois senator could hit that number as soon as Tuesday night depending on how quickly he wins commitments from nearly 200 uncommitted superdelegates -- party officials who are free to back any candidate. He secured one key endorsement on Tuesday from U.S. Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, the third-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives and the top-ranking black member of Congress. "Today the process ends," Clyburn told NBC's "Today" show. He urged other superdelegates to follow his lead and announce their support on Tuesday so the Democratic Party could have a clear nominee by the end of the day. A number of other superdelegates began throwing their support behind Obama. Voting ends in South Dakota at 7 p.m. MDT/9 p.m. EDT and in Montana an hour later, with results expected shortly after. The polls opened amid growing speculation about when Clinton would drop out of the race and end the grueling, historic battle for the Democratic nomination. I hope she doesn’t concede. I hope she fights down to the last second. Hildebeast, you go girl!
I have this mental visual of Hillary in a coffin with all of the MSM pushing her into a grave....the problem is that Hillary is kicking and screaming....
The AP has long enjoyed its reputation as a solidly Left Wing Socialist Partisan propaganda wing of the DNC and thus is not a serious news organization.
Remember when this happened to Fred Thompson right before the Iowa caucus? It probably did hurt him and keep him out of second place. This may be the Obama campaign putting this out to make the superdelegates jump on board for him faster than they are right now.
The only problem is the plethora of outlets that use AP as their ‘reliable source’ for news.
How many local radio stations default to an AP feed for their hourly news updates?
Yawn looks like McNuts is the next prez.
If not the Obama campaign it is the MSM. They are trying to influence the voting today!
