GOP blames Democrats for break-in; police find no political motive

GRAND RAPIDS -- Kent County Republicans continue to claim a recent break-in at their Grand Rapids headquarters was politically motivated

And one party leader publicly blamed unnamed Democrats in a mass e-mail sent to supporters.

"We knew the Democrats would do anything to win, but we didn't expect this!" wrote Kent GOP Chair Dave Dishaw in a note asking for money to help cover "costs" and support candidates.

Grand Rapids Police on Tuesday confirmed they are investigating an early morning break-in that occurred last Thursday at the GOP's offices at 264 Leonard St. NW, near U.S. 131.

Lt. Ralph Mason said a report indicates thieves entered a side door and took about $200 from a cash box, a laptop computer and a large box of stamps. They also smashed computers, crumpled banners and took miscellaneous items, he said.

But Mason said because there was no graffiti, police have no reason to believe it was politically motivated.

"I don't know what they're basing that on. ... That may be a stretch," Mason said. "It was a burglary. They got a laptop, they got cash money. ... They obviously concentrated on things they can pawn or sell."

Kent County Republican Executive Director Sam Moore said he believes GOP offices were targeted because the intruders did not enter other businesses in the building and because they took odd items such as a gavel used by former Chairwoman Betsy DeVos.

Moore also said he received threatening phone calls two weeks ago when Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama held a rally in Grand Rapids, though he did not report them to police.

"Based on what has happened in the past, I would find it somewhat hard to believe it's an unregistered voter, or person not interested in politics," Moore said.

Kent County Democratic Chair Sue Levy dismissed the notion that party activists could have been involved in criminal activity.

"We'll beat them at the polls," Levy said.

Levy believes GOP leaders are just using the "unfortunate" incident to raise money.

"(The e-mail Dishaw sent out) looked to me like a solicitation more than anything," she said.

This is going to get interesting if Obastalin wins and the Demonazis control the senate and congress with a veto proof majority the fairness doctrine will be put in to effect and the new media will be silenced. Then it will really look like Pravda! God help us all.

Yep, I said in a post last week that if Obama wins, and the dems keep their majority, that Limbaugh will probably be off the air sometime in 2009. Hopefully, he will be able to do like Howard Stern, and move to satellite radio at that point.

Sorry for the heavy handed reply. That you are a Freeper automatically puts you in the Hi IQ arena. Just so sick of the trivial battles we fight, when we have a true disaster awaiting us.

I hate to see the good guys taken down with the pretenders.

Our congressman IS a pretender. So I know they are among us.

Sorry. On second thought, it appears to be a clever sound bite.

Not clueless. All in all, a good response intended to create the sense of Dem sleaziness.

And it worked.

No problem. As you have probably garnered, I live in the SF Bay Area - the "land of fruits and nuts". Anytime you want to trade your "trivial battles" for my "trivial battles", just let me know!!

The Republican Party out here is infested with RINO's, and they like to run amok. In any event, the makeup of the local Bay Area Republican party is a moot point, as they are pretty much irrelevant anyway (not sure if I even consider Arnie to BE a republican, RINO or otherwise). At least you guys are still a major force to be reckoned with back there. Keep fightin' the fight, and send us John Engler (if he can still be found!!).

"Who is your congressman?"

The Hon Vern Ehlers.. Scientist from Calvin College, who has opposed ANWAR and seems to have bought into the Global Warming Hoax.

I know, I answered with a partial editorial. But guys like these belong on the other side.

So disappointed in Arnie. I had very high hopes for him, even realizing him to be a bit lib.. He seemed a self made man that understood the principles of hard work and reward. Seemed to understand management. Seems that Celebrity won out.

I guess the power of the p..... is not to be underestimated as it seems sure that his wife runs him.... so sad..

I suppose somebody has to!! Actually, I guess I sort-of like it too. However, the libs out here drive me up a wall (totally, dude!!). I read somewhere that SF used to be a fairly Conservative city right up through the 1950's. Something went HORRIBLY wrong in the 1960's. If SF were a Conservative city, it would be one of the best places in the world to live. Instead, it is one of the worst. Such a pity, what a waste. I wish we could take the people of West Michigan and transplant them into SF, and take the libs in SF and transplant them....... well, somewhere far away from the United States!!

SF started to go wrong in the early 1900's when they voted to build the Municipal Railway, intended to drive out the private companies. It took 40 years, but they succeeded.

Now I like Muni, but it came at the expense of stealing private property, and started with a twisted sense of entitlement dating back, like I said to the populism of the 1900's.

Maybe from all the broke prospectors robbed by big business back then? Who can say.

Tell me about it. Now he has recently flipped on the issues of "gay marriage" and human-caused global warming. He is now in favor of both, whereas he was opposed to both. Maybe he has been hanging out with Jenny Granholm too much!! Of course, it is very telling that Granholm was raised out here in the SF Bay area, after immigrating to the U.S. from Canada!! Yikes!!

Scary. I remember when he was running for political office for the very first time, back in the 1970's, I think. I was a little kid, and I believe he was running for GR City Council. He came around to every house in our neighborhood, and gave each household a sappling pine tree (about 10 inches tall), planted in a styrofoam cup. I think we planted ours out in the back yard somewhere.

Either way, he won the election, but I remember asking my mom about him around a year (or so) later, and she said that although she voted for him, she was real disappointed in the job he was doing. If he was giving out trees way back then, it doesn't sound like he has changed very much. I think his campaign sign that year also featured a stylized drawing of a tree, superimposed on top of his last name (all in green, of course).

When I met him on our front pourch, I remember thinking he looked rather old even back then (if I recall, he was wearing a suit, had a bald head, and wore wire rimmed glasses). If this is the same Vern Ehlers, I am really surprised to hear that he is still kicking around 30 years later. How old is he?? 105??
