Cooling Underway: Global Temperature Continues to Drop in May

Cooling Underway: Global Temperature Continues to Drop in May

'Significantly Colder' - 16-month temperature drop of -0.774°C!

Global temperatures continued to slide in May 2008. Meteorologist Anthony Watts details the cooling temperatures in a report titled “Global Temperature Dives in May.” The new global temperature data reveals a whopping three quarters of a degree Celsius drop in temperatures since January 2007. Watts reported late yesterday that the cooling is “equal in magnitude to the generally agreed upon ‘global warming signal’ of the last 100 years.”

“Confirming what many of us have already noted from the anecdotal evidence coming in of a much cooler than normal May, such as late spring snows as far south as Arizona, extended skiing in Colorado, and delays in snow cover melting in many parts of the northern hemisphere, the University of Alabama, Huntsville (UAH), published their satellite-derived Advanced Microwave Sounder Unit data set of the Lower Troposphere for May 2008,” Watts reported on June 3.

“It is significantly colder globally, colder even than the significant drop to -0.046°C seen in January 2008,” Watts explained. The updated global temperature chart is here)

“But even more impressive is the change since the last big peak in global temperature in January 2007 at 0.594°C, giving a 16 month change in temperature of -0.774°C which is equal in magnitude to the generally agreed upon ‘global warming signal’ of the last 100 years,” he added. [Note: MIT Climate Scientist Dr. Richard Lindzen’s March 2008 presentation of data from the Hadley Centre of the UK Met Office found the Earth has had “no statistically significant warming since 1995.” (LINK) An April 2008 peer-reviewed study found "global warming will stop." - LINK ]

Climatologist Dr. Roy Spencer, formerly of NASA and currently principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, commented on the new data. “If you exclude the anomalous 1992 cooling from the Pinatubo volcano eruption, it’s the coolest May in 20 years,” Spencer said.

Physicist Dr. Lubos Motl, formerly of Harvard University, also reacted to the new temperature data. “The global anomaly was -0.17 °C, the coldest reading after January 2000 and the third coldest monthly figure after September 1993. Yes, I mean that anomaly-wise, May was even colder than all the cool months of 2008, despite the dramatically weakening La Nina that now seems likely to change to ENSO neutral conditions this month. For example, the month-on-month cooling from April 2008 was by 0.19 °C while May 2008 was more than 0.75 °C cooler than January 2007. The average anomaly for the first five months of 2008 is negative. 1994 was the last year whose average annual anomaly was negative,” Motl wrote on June 4. (LINK)

“The Sun has been spotless at least for 9 days. The standardized May sunspot number was 2.9, equal to April, and the solar flux was even slightly lower than in April, namely 68.4,” Motl wrote.

I blame the capitalist west. It’s time to calculate how much global cooling we’re responsible for and make appropriate reparations to the poor nations that will be hardest hit in the coming freeze.

Al Gore said the debate is over. You mean it’s not over? Deniers of global warming have been compared to people who think the earth is flat.

Do you mean to say that, with all this talk of global warming, some people are actually reviewing actual temperature and climate information? Do you mean they are not just taking Big Al’s word for it, they are researching the data to see if there are trends such as Al warns us about?

I can’t believe that independent researchers would look at global climate data and weather patterns. They are contradicting Al Gore’s decree that the debate is over.

That's why the new term is “Climate Change”, and not Glow-Bull Warming or Global Cooling. It covers every contingency beautifully and we can still blame CO2 either way. It's a wonderful shift in the BS!

Michael Mann..."He is best known for his paleoclimate 'hockey stick' reconstructions of the past several millennia from tree ring, ice core, coral and other data. Mann's recent work has been on modelling El Niño, and he has said that "we are already committed to 50 to 100 years of global warming and several centuries of sea level rise" and that reduction in fossil fuel emissions is required to slow the process down to a level that can be coped with.""

This is what is being taught at Penn State these days. Sad.

No, it is indeed over. We now know without a doubt that Al Gore, along with all of his followers, are evil idiots determined to destroy the world economy.

Why do you think they changed the name from 'global warming' to 'climate change'?

Whether the temperature goes up or the temperature goes down, either way...

actually Mann’s famous hockey stick may come in handy of temps keep cooling. Back in the cold old days, the River Thames in london used to freeze and people would ice skate on it. Some of ‘Mann’s Hockey Sticks’ would come in handy.

Don’t worry though folks, James Hansen NASA’s rsident global warming alarmist has been ‘adjusting’ the data lately to fit his global warming hypothesis. Between him and Hathaway, the gov’t expert on Solar dynamics and plasma flow, (he said solar cycle 24 would start a year ago and be very intense) the PAID gov’t global warming hacks are starting to be made fools of. Now 5 months is not proof of anything, but the Branch Algorians, now led by Barbara Boxer in the Senate, are getting increasingly desperate to pass cap and trade. They know they have to pass it soon so they can take credit for ‘saving’ the planet, because if they don’t, facts will out them for the liars and opportunists and marxists they are.

Wrong. The capitalist west has delayed global cooling. We need a "goal and trade" system to promote warming. Every nation will have a CO2 emission goal they have to meet. If they fail to meet their goal, they have to pay other countries that surpassed their responsibility and exceeded their CO2 emission goal.

We've had nothing but cold and rain around Pocatello for the past few weeks. It's 12:30 PM and all the way up to 48 degrees. I had to mow the lawn at my rental house in the rain yesterday. It was 7" tall in the space of a week. Lush, green and wet. A real pain to mow. The weather looks more like early April than early June.

It looks like the Senate Republicans have grown a spine. I just heard on Rush that Mitch McConnell has forced the reading of the entire 500 page bill on the Senate floor. He can later force a second reading with amendments later.

That should slow things down.

Up here in Alaska, things are also looking quite cool. Lots of clouds and rain along the coast. Snow down to 1500 feet still sticking around. In Thompson pass near Valdez there is so much snow in the mountains that I don’t think it will all melt this year. Snow level is really low up in the pass area. On the Glenn Highway going to Anchorage there are areas now with snow that I’ve never seen like that in the past 20 years at the beginning of June.

Snow on the ground will increase Albedo, leading to more cooling. Interesting to note in the link posted is another important fact: The tropics are cooling more rapidly, relatively speaking, then anywhere else. For the seventh month in a row they are below the 20 year average, and getting worse. This is important because heat flows from the tropics to the poles, thus keeping higher latitudes warmer than they would otherwise be. If the tropics keep getting cooler, the higher latitudes will soon follow. Expect next winter to be a real doozy.

Robert Felix (Not by Fire, but by Ice) notes that the characteristic of an ice age is a net accumulation of snow/ice year over year. More falls than melts. Your local observations along with few sunspots and tropical cooling seem to point to characteristics of an approaching ice age. Too bad the lefty carbon control freaks aren't paying attention to what is actually happening.

FYI, we had 7" of snow in May 1st in my city (next to Pocatello, ID). The latest snow I had seen since 2000 was April 15th. Even then, my daffodils were in full bloom. They didn't bloom until about May 20 this year.
