George S. PattonT - To the 3rd Army, June 5, 1944

Be Seated.

Men, this stuff we hear about America wanting to stay out of the war, not wanting to fight, is a lot of bullsh*t. Americans love to fight - traditionally. All real Americans love the sting and clash of battle. When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble player; the fastest runner; the big league ball players; the toughest boxers. Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans despise cowards. Americans play to win - all the time. I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That’s why Americans have never lost, not ever will lose a war, for the very thought of losing is hateful to an American.

You are not all going to die. Only two percent of you here today would die in a major battle. Death must not be feared. Every man is frightened at first in battle. If he says he isn’t, he’s a goddamn liar. Some men are cowards, yes! But they fight just the same, or get the hell shamed out of them watching men who do fight who are just as scared. The real hero is the man who fights even though he is scared. Some get over their fright in a minute under fire, some take an hour. For some it takes days. But the real man never lets fear of death overpower his honor, his sense of duty to this country and his innate manhood.

As do I but I’m beginning to feel a bit like a dinosaur.

Frankly even then the man (Patton) was to honest to be Pres.

He reminds me of the Churchill I’m reading about in Buchanan’s book - the best in a war, very dangerous otherwise.

THere are some fantastic biographies of CHurchill. I would not use Buchanan’s take on him to judge the man. He was brilliant and foresaw many things, including the trouble of the Mohammedians.

That part in the movie where Paton is looking over the dead on a battlefield and says, “I love this”, is like the gleeful Churchill as England is about to enter WWI.

750,000 from the British Empire died in that war.

Have you read Buchanan’s book?

I’ve never read about Churchill before.

Hah! This is great...I work with a young guy who I have a lot of respect for, but...he is a liberal. Good guy, just has mush in the head, as Rush likes to say.

Last night he and I were having dinner after work, and I was telling him about Patton, since I have read a few books on him.

I described this very speech to him...he had never heard it or heard of it. I am going to send it to him.

Patton would've been kicked out of today's PC military....

I’ve never read about Churchill before.

Churchill, in his own words is fantastic. Read the 6 volume set on WWII, I bought a set in really good shape on ebay for around 50 bucks a few years ago.

I love to pick up a volume and just read about that time in his words.
