WASHINGTON, — Sexual activity is on the rise among U.S. teens while their use of contraceptives is sliding in the other direction, according to a study released on Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Click here to view the study.

Approximately 48 percent of 14,041 high school students said they have had sex, representing a 2 percent hike since 2005; however, teens still are having less sex today than their counterparts did in the 1990s.

The 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System study showed a 2 percent drop-off in the percentage of teens who said they used condoms while having sex.

The CDC questioned the students on a range of risky behaviors including sexual activity and drug and alcohol use. Ninth- through 12th-graders from 39 states participated in the study in spring 2007.

I'm sure that the liberals will find a way to blame this on abstinence-only education.

If only these children had been taught the joys of condom use. /s

Yesterday there was an article claiming the exact opposite of this one.

Which is it.

On Breibart, this was a companion piece to an article stating just the opposite “Sex down condom use up” using the same study, citing a longer time span.

What is funny, liberals love to tout studies which show that abstinence education does little, but they never have studies which show their pornographic sex education courses work. Fact is, most teenagers are gonna do what teenagers do no matter what information you give them. It would still be far better to try to instill some decent values. Of course liberals and their sexual predator friends wants lots of free and loose sex by young children.

Approximately 48 percent of 14,041 high school students said they have had sex...

With 26% of high school students contracting STDs and 48% sexually active, it doesn't take a lot of math to figure that 54% of those who are sexually active contract an STD (assuming the surveys are accurate). If you toss out those who only have one partner, where it's a first time for both, you're left with over 70% of teens with more than one sexual partner contracting an STD. Somehow, I don't find those odds good enough that I'd consider "you're going to do it with lots of people, and there's nothing I can say to change that, so just use condoms" a good answer.

I saw that headline and immediately came to post exactly as you posted.

I’m more inclined to believe this report though.

1975 and I was the Drum Captain of the band. We were hanging out in front of the school before getting into our uniforms and we were talking about who had had sex in a swimming pool. What a bunch of liars we were.

My friends and I in the late 70’s would steal our Dads warm Old Style beers and smoke ditch weed.

Little did we know were were just punishing ourselves by drinking warm beer and getting sick off the lowest grade weed out there.

Never underestimate the poor decision making skills of youth.

I tried this morning to find them in Breibart and their search function sucks big time. Then I found the links in my browser in history. Have at them.

US teens having less sex, drugs This seems to use the longer time span. comparing from the 90's to 2007.

Teen Sexual Activity Increases, Contraceptive Use Decreases This one is comparing from 2005 to 2007.

I think that this part of the report from page 33 answers some of those questions:
Sexual Behaviors that Contribute to Unintended Pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Including HIV Infection

During 1991–2007, significant linear decreases occurred in the percentage of students who ever had sexual intercourse (54.1%–47.8%), who had sexual intercourse with four or more persons during their lifetime (18.7%–14.9%), and who were currently sexually active (37.5%–35.0%). The percentage of students who had sexual intercourse for the first time before age 13 years decreased during 1991–2005 (10.2%–6.2%) and then did not change significantly during 2005–2007 (6.2%–7.1%). The percentage of sexually active students who used a condom at last sexual intercourse increased during 1991–2003 (46.2%–63.0%) and then did not change significantly during 2003–2007 (63.0%–61.5%). The percentage of students who drank alcohol or used drugs before last sexual intercourse increased during 1991–2001 (21.6–25.6) and then decreased during 2001–2007 (25.6%–22.5%). The percentage of students who were taught in school about AIDS or HIV infection increased during 1991–1997 (83.3%–91.5%) and then decreased during 1997–2007 (91.5%–89.5%). During 2005–2007, no significant changes occurred in any of these sexual behavior variables.(emphasis added)
The gains that were claimed from 1991 to 2007 were all made from 1991 to 2003. From somewhere between 2003 and 2005 things stopped improving and then have either remained fairly constant or gotten worse until 2007. Can someone tell me when "comprehensive sex education" started getting pushed in public schools?

Not surprising that someone would pull out the one or two salient facts that support their position I suppose...
