Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who wrapped his party’s presidential nomination just this week, is already besieged by liberal constituencies demanding that he cut military spending to boost social programs.
Two influential liberal groups have sent the presumptive Democratic nominee a letter pressing him to support cuts to defense programs to pay for universal preschool, relief for Americans facing foreclosure on their homes and expanded benefits for military veterans.
The demands carry weight because the groups, the Black Leadership Forum and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), represent two constituencies that are important to Obama’s political strategy: blacks and Hispanics.
Their calls for defense cuts have drawn the support of leading House liberals, many of whom gave Obama crucial support early in his contest against Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.).
The groups have also called on presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) to support the cuts. There is less pressure on McCain, however, because fellow Republicans have kept quiet on the issue. McCain also expects little support from black voters.
But McCain could feel some discomfort because his campaign views Hispanics as a crucial voting bloc. His support for shifting emphasis from defense to social programs could help him appeal to that group. The calls of liberal groups and lawmakers come at a particularly awkward time for Obama.
Since clinching the party’s nomination on Tuesday, Obama has already tacked to the right on security issues in preparation for the general election. During a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee Wednesday, Obama proposed sanctions on Iran that analysts viewed as far tougher than what he suggested before.
Now Obama must balance tough talk on national security with the desires of many Democrats to slim American military power.

The DO want to see America destroyed! If we ever rebuild this nation back to where it should be, we need to find a way to allow free speech but BAN groups like LULAC. Groups that want to bring about the destruction of a society should not be allowed a voice.

But the more I hear Obummer speak, the more I think McPain would counter another attack instead of expedite one.
I am becomming very concerned about the outcome of this election.
There is a timeline in effect and Mr. Obummer would be like putting everything on "Fast Forward."
I can’t believe this isn’t parody. Why in the world would we want to reduce our military strength - NOW? Certainly John McCain would not go along with this BS. Our nation is slowly dying as you have to give ever-increasing handouts in order to get people’s votes.

Now I think I know how he plans to pay for it! He's going to try to appease Vets (pay them off) by giving them free health-care because he knows they are the main ones that oppose defense cuts. What a slimy turd!

Obama is a loser waiting to happen. When the public finds sees exactly what he has planned they are going to head the other direction. If I were the Democrat party I’d be fearful of how much defense cutting gets in the mix. Just let an attack happen under their watch after publicly cutting defense.

The bill offers all kinds of vets benefits; GI ed., health care, GI mortgages, etc. All after one hitch, war or no. The bill is designed to cripple the armed forces by discouraging careers in the military.

The Left looks at the Pentagon and thinks ‘free money’!!!!
Just look back at the Carter and Clinton fiascos and see that the only cutbacks or downsizing which ever occurred where Defense related. And then the GOP had to run up deficits to cover the holes in our military that were created.
Defending America has never been on the front of any democrat candidates mind. And usually not even in the back either.

My husband is a retired soldier (my hero). He completed his degree, as did my son, a five year veteran of the Coast Guard, with the aid of their GI Bill benefits. Both of them oppose this boondoggle. It is only another reason to hate the politics of Obama, the naive neophyte.
