Today, the Club for Growth Political Action Committee endorses Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell in his bid to unseat Republican Rep. Don Young in the state's August primary.
The reason for the endorsement is simple. Mr. Parnell is a solid conservative who led the fight for lower taxes and spending in the state legislature, and joined Gov. Sarah Palin in pushing for reform in the state. The man he is hoping to replace isn't economically conservative in the least. Mr. Young is actually a poster child for what has gone wrong with the Republican Party in Washington.
Over his 35 years in Congress, Mr. Young made himself into the most powerful Republican on the House Transportation Committee. But instead of using his power to steer Republicans down a principled, conservative track, he helped derail the GOP train in 2006.
Mr. Young spends taxpayer money so wastefully he could make a liberal Democrat blush. As chairman of the Transportation Committee (from 2001 to 2007), Mr. Young was directly responsible for one of the biggest boondoggles of the Republican majority the 2005 highway bill. With a price tag of $296 billion, the highway bill contained a record 6,371 pork projects.
One of those projects was the $223 million Bridge to Nowhere, inserted by Mr. Young. The notorious bridge was meant to connect the city of Ketchikan, Alaska population 8,000 to an airport on Gravina Island population 50. Instead, it came to symbolize Republican excess, and helped cost the GOP its majority.
But the bridge isn't Mr. Young's only earmark to draw negative attention. It seems the veteran lawmaker inserted a $10 million earmark into the 2006 transportation bill for a road project in Florida.

There are many GOP politicians that illustrate what’s wrong with the GOP, starting at the top.
Term limits. Senator Frist had it and did it right.
What’s a “GOP”? All I see in DC these days are democrats and their lap dogs with an “R” after their name.
Don Young — you are part of why the FALCON PARTY is going to be the new MAJORITY PARTY — they are CONSERVATIVE!!!
It is an EXTINCT party that was surpassed by the FALCON Party in 2010.
Yep, another Republican exhibiting the parties’ motto: “The GOP. The Party of Corruption, Ineptness, and Hypocrisy” (trademark pending).
That would be a copyright, not a patent.
The title of this thread is SO true!
That’s exactly the *point* of this primary. Some keep lambasting the GOP for being Democrat-lite. What they dont notice is that the GOP has turned over massively and will turn over more by 2009. Between retirements, some of them forced, defeats in primaries, and defeats by Democrats, many of the GOP House members who “went to do good and ended up doing well” are being replaced.
Ending Young’s career would cap the progress of this. The moral is - the GOP needs to clean up its act or the general election voters will do it for us. Kudos to Alaskan GOP leaders for taking this on. I hope we can retire Young in the primary so we dont lose the seat in the general election.
Yawn ... there are more than one hundred and sixty conservative Republicans in Congress.
There are zero conservatives in Congress from any other party.
That fact will be true in 2009, 2010, 2011 and so on.
It is probably amzaing that Parnell and Palin have been elected to anything in AK. Retiring Young will make many of the old timers downnright mad, and they will vote Democrat in November.

Nope in 2010 there'll be a few CONSERVATIVES who are members of the FALCON Party!! The Republicans are dead, because they are spending like LIBERALS!
Um ... no. None of the 3rd party types will be in elective office.
Are you one of the twits who fell for the Reform Party routine in the 1990s? 30 years of the LP and how many do they have in office? How is this party any different from what the Constitution Party already is, which is another 1% party?
If you make it purist and extreme, it will be a 1% party like the LP or Constitution Party. You wont get elected. If you skip being purist to create a unifying large party, well you are back to being exactly what the GOP is today. As such, it will be redundant and unnecessary and therefore a failure.
It’s the way democracy works. You cannot capture 51% of the vote by having a purist agenda that only 10% of the people agree with. Our best bet is to defeat RINOs and nominate conservatives in the Republican party.
You have it backwards. Palin and Parnell are popular, Young is not.
If the Republicans dont dump Young, the general election voters will. Young should have taken the hint that Doolittle of CA took and retired. Thanks to that, we will keep the CA seat that we might have lost.
Our best bet is to defeat RINOs and nominate conservatives in the Republican party.
True, but it is getting so that the leadership of the RNC is becoming RINOs!! I am not donating $$ to the RNC this year, because McCain (Whom Im voting for) is not conservative enough - he is BETTER then OBAMA thou.
