I hate to start a post like this by talking about myself, but I want to clear something up: I dont subscribe to organized Christian religion but I do believe someone is out there and is listening and, yes, even cares. Thats why when stuff like this happens, I actually pray myself and very much appreciate it when others do, too. So:
This afternoon (Saturday), Rupert and I were at an engagement party for some friends of ours when his cell phone rang. It was his mom up in Illinois, and she told him bad news.
Ruperts dad is named Joe, and he rides a motorcycle. He was riding it today when a [possibly] drunk driver swerved into his lane and hit him head-on, and then apparently ran over him - accidentally or not, we dont know yet; the guy is in jail so that might mean something.
Joe was CareFlighted out to the hospital in St. Louis. Ive gotten a few reports from Ruperts aunt and the injuries include a fractured pelvis, a possibly broken femur, a badly mangled foot/lower leg, and an as-yet-undefined brain injury. I dont know if a skull fracture is involved but whatever the cause, he has intracranial bleeding on both sides of his brain, bad enough that they have already put him into a medically-induced coma and will be operating on his head tonight.
I just got back from taking Rupert to the airport so hes on his way up there as we speak. I didnt go with him because there wasnt time for me to get coverage for my work and we have no one to keep the dogs because my parents are out of town; Rupert wanted me to hold down the fort here for now and go up there later, when Joes in in the recovery phase.
Thats all I know for now. Rupert will call me with a full report later tonight after he talks to the doctors, but from what his mom and aunt said, its a pretty serious situation. A coma is never a desirable state. Neither is having a fractured pelvis. Joe is a healthy guy and hes only 56 so I know hell recover just fine and be back to his ornery self in no time, and believe me, the man is ORNERY, but the next few days and weeks are going to be a really rough time for him and his family.
Ruperts mom needs prayers, too. Shes had a hard time the last few months because of Ruperts call-up to the Army and now with his impending neck surgery. She worries a lot about her only child and its just been really hard for her. She and Joe were going to come down when Rupert has his surgery (which we expect to be week after next), and now obviously they wont be able to, and well hell. I cant imagine how very much more stressful and painful everything has gotten for her now and my heart really goes out to her. Shes a wonderful woman and she doesnt deserve all of this worry.
Something inside me always screams aloud when things like this happen, telling me that even if prayers are never answered, I must try anyway, and if I have people to ask to do the same, I should. So here it is. Im praying for Joes speedy, full, and incident-free recovery. Praying that he wont be in too much pain when he wakes up from the coma. Praying that bad things stop happening to Ruperts family.
And I doubt shell be doing it any time soon, but Ruperts mom reads my blog and the comments, so if you have words of comfort for her, I know shell appreciate it when she gets the chance to see them. For the same reason, please no stories or anecdotes that would in any way increase her worry about this. And I know these people Im talking about are complete strangers to you but somehow I dont think it matters. Im a stranger to you, too, and I tell you that the things you all said when Digger died last year and when Rupert was called up helped me get through those times.
In case youd like to know what kind of man this is who Im asking you to pray for: hes worked in coal mines a good part of his life and hes rough-n-tumble, yet he cried the most moving and heartfelt tears Ive ever seen in my life at Ruperts going-away-to-the-Army party. Hes funny and hes makes the best fried eggs Ive ever tasted and he loves his cat Forrest even though Forrest doesnt deserve it because Forrest is evil. He shoots guns, and the motorcycle that is now ruined was a beautiful Harley with creamy-ivory pretty parts on it. (I dont even like motorcycles but I wanted to lick that thing when I first beheld it.) He plays Wii with his 12-year-old niece and even when she kicks his ass, which she does, he has a good time. He told me the day I met him that he wanted me to marry his boy so clearly hes highly intelligent. Im just saying. Hes loyal, generous, and I know beyond any doubt that hed give his life for Rupert or anyone else he loves if he had to. His flaws are charming and piquant. His son is the love of my life.
I think Ive made my point. Joes one of the good guys and thats why even I, the agnostic, cant help but pray for him with everything I have and to ask a few thousand people to do the same.
I will join you in prayer.
Thank you :)
Prayer ping, please help!
Joining you in Prayer.
“Im praying for Joes speedy, full, and incident-free recovery.”
As will we. I am certain Our Lord hears you.
Prayers going up now. I remember when my first child was born he struggled so much and it really puts you on your knees. It is times like these that humble you and make you search for a connection with someone greater than you that open the door for faith and love to pour in. I am also saying a prayer for your budding faith.
You now have a parnter. Though given his background, we may want to leave Forrest out of this... :)
prayers being lifted.
Relax. The Almighty is not hard of hearing.
Joining you in prayers.
You’re welcome. :)
I’m praying for Joe, Rupert, his mom and you. For Joe’s recovery, Rupert’s deployment and surgery, strength for Rupert’s mom, peace in all of your minds and hearts, and most importantly, for understanding of who God is, and how much He loves all of you. I have learned that the most difficult moments in life are the ones God uses to soften my heart and teach me the most. (see my profile) God Bless
Of course i will pray for your and yours.
GOD Bless ya’ll...
Prayers for the gentleman’s full and speedy recovery.
Thank you all but I should probably tell everyone that I do not know Rachel and her family except through reading her website. I love her and her family because I love all people and pray for any that ask :)
Prayers for Rupert’s dad and his mom as well. the fact that they are doing the brain surgery is good.
May the Lord guide the surgeon’s hands and mind.
Dear Jesus, walk with this young man as he goes to the side of his injured fathr.
Please address your prayers to Rachel, Rupert, Joe and Joe’s wife. Not that I do not need prayer myself:)
Of course my prayers will go up for all involved!
Many years ago when I was a teenager I was involved in a pretty serious motorcycle wreck. I broke both pelvic bones, my tailbone and found out there is an illiac and it can definitely become separated from the sacrho or saccro or however it might be spelled. I have no clue what the medical protocol is for those types of injuries are these days but I know I ended up spending 30+ days in traction and then had the fun of learning how to walk again.
If I had a word of advice to insert here, it would be for those around him to pay lots of attention to anything he may say once he awakens from the coma. I say that because it was only much later I realized I also had torn a few ligaments and tendons too. I simply never voiced it unless I was being moved by the aides in order that they might change my bed linens or bathe me because that’s when some of my injuries would really hurt. The aides never documented my file about any complaints about additional pain.
I had my first follow-up with my orthopoedic 3 days after I was finally released from the hospital and he asked me how I was feeling. I told him I was doing okay all things considered except my neck still hurt. Less than five minutes later I was being seen by a neurosurgeon and it turned out I’d also broken my neck.
I’m pretty sure that same entity you’re now praying to probably had quite a bit to do with my not ending up paralyzed and/or worse. Not that it was a piece of cake or anything since I then had fun getting fitted for a new garment I couldn’t take off for close to 9 months but wearing a brace which extended down to the middle of my back and up to just above my ears was a very small price to pay considering what could have been the options.
Our Father, I pray the induced coma will give the time needed for the brain to heal guided by your loving hands as well as those of your servants, the physicians. Please offer comfort, strong shoulders and love to all.
In Christ’s name,
whenever I feel the need to pray for something I always pray “Not my will, but YOUR Will Be Done,Lord”.That said- Prayers UP...
Always His will. I just pray that He helps Joe or that He helps the family deal with their loss.
Happy to pray.
A lot of us finally got tuned into God at a time of trauma.
You are a very moving writer my dear and I hope Joe recovers to ride again. He has my prayers without question. However, I doubt your sincerity when it comes to prayer. Doubt is I suppose what being an agnostic is all about. You think faith is an insurance policy when mortal men fail. It is not! Sometimes the answer to our most urgent prayers is; no. I pray this is not the case here.
I pray for Joes full recovery and that you and Rupert will have a wonderful life together and give Joe what he desires the most; grandchildren!
Prayers respectfully offered.
I wish I had wrote it but I just posted it. Rachel (her link at the top) did and I just passed it on. Ty for the prayers!
Deep in the night, I lift up your beloved Joe in prayer. I pray for you, too - you are loved and important, and even in your wondering and questioning you are a beautiful child of God, loved for your own wonderful self...
I will send prayers for Rachel, Rupert, Joe and their family.
God will be glorified!
Please accept my humble apology. I certainly didnt mean to imply
Dear Heavenly Father,
I pray in Jesus’ name that you would heal Joe, thwart the plans of the enemy, and comfort his family with Your Presence. And somehow let them know without a doubt that there is a family of believers out there who love them (even though we’ve never met), and who are lifting them up to You every day. Father, we know from your Word that its the enemy who comes to steal, kill and destroy but that You sent Your Son that we may have abundant life, so I ask that Your will be made manifest on earth now as it is in heaven, where there is no sorrow or sickness or despair. Give them Your perfect peace now, Lord, that goes way beyond their understanding. We love and trust you Lord and commit all these things to You. Amen.
Lord, tonight we lift up to you Joe, Rupert, his mom, and Dawnsblood. We ask you for your tender mercy and healing. We especially ask you that you would grant to Joe complete healing with no internal injuries, and no permanent brain injury. Please bring faith and peace to those that love Joe. For your glory, and in Jesus’ holy name, Amen!
Prayers for Joe!
Dear Hevenly Father in Jesus name we pray for Joe. Thank you for hearing our prayer. In Jesus name, amen.
Prayers on the way!
Praying for you. Some of the FReepers write the nicest prayers. I pray them, and it’s like we are praying together.
“even if prayers are never answered, I must try anyway,” - I realized a few years ago prayers are always answered, it’s just that sometimes the answer is No. Perhaps that will be of help sometime in the future if a prayer does not get answered the way you hope it to be.
That said, God is merciful, He does answer prayer.
You got it.
A humble Prayer for All involved. May the Healing power of our Lord Jesus comfort you in this time of need...
“In His hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” Job 12:10
“How will we escape if we neglect a salvation as great as this? It was first proclaimed by the Lord himself, and then it was confirmed to us by those who heard him.” Hebrews 2:3
“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.” Acts 16:31
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” John 1:12
Prayers for you and your loved ones.
Prayers, of course.
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I pray for complete healing and restoration of this man. I ask for your blessing over him family and a revelation of Your grace and love to invade their lives. I thank You Lord Jesus that You bore his pain and injuries and purchased his healing, paid in full by Your precious blood. Release it now, I pray in Jesus Name.
I also pray for the doctors and medical staff, that they would make no mistakes and be supernaturally aware of everything they need to know to properly treat him. Amen.
I will pray and I ask you to consider, since you feel the need to ask for prayers, to turn to Almighty God in the person of his Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. I pray for Joe’s full and ongoing recovery. God bless you and your entire family during this time of crisis.
Prayers for healing, peace and courage.
Rachel, when I said to find Almighty God through his Son Jesus Christ, that’s just between YOU and God, a personal thing, not involving any organized church institution or denomination. Just between you and the Lord only, and again, may Joe’s healing be 100% and may God empower your entire family with the strength to endure this ordeal. I started out this morning with nothing more ambitious in mind than to read about last night’s fight results, but now I have something far more important to do, which is to enlist the prayers of all those I know who will pray for Joe, and I will continue to as well.
