New York Mayor, ABC News Invite Obama, McCain to Historic Town Hall

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and ABC News have invited Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain to participate in a 90-minute, primetime town hall meeting to be broadcast live from Federal Hall in New York City, but the two campaigns said today they do not want the event to be broadcast by only one network.

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., may be taking the suggestion of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and visit Iraq. However, Obama will not be joined by his opponent. (ABC News Photo Illustration)Obama, D-Ill., and McCain, R-Ariz., have indicated a willingness to participate in such a forum -- unprecedented in the history of modern presidential campaigns -- though both camps said today they want the event to be available for broad distribution.

"Both the McCain and Obama campaigns agree the town halls will be open to press, but not sponsored or monitored by the press," Brooke Buchanan, the McCain campaign's traveling press secretary, said.

Jeffrey Schneider, a spokesman for ABC News, said the network is ready to discuss the idea of wider distribution of the event.

"We think the important thing is bringing the candidates together," he said.

The idea for such town hall appearances -- instead of or in addition to the traditional structured presidential debates -- was first floated by McCain's camp, and was accepted by Obama.

"We are thrilled to see you both embrace the idea of joint town hall meetings where voters can an have unfiltered opportunity to hear how each candidate would address the great issues facing our country," read a letter sent to both campaigns today from Bloomberg, I-New York City, and ABC News president David Westin extending the invitation to the two campaigns.

The pressure’s on for obambi to agree to the debate instead of his “UNSTRUCTURED” speech he’d rather give (that someone else writes and no one can question in the midst of).

You remind me of the left wingers who could see no difference between Bush and Gore in 2000.. There were several thousand Greenies of them that refused to vote for (Earth in the Balance) Gore because they could see no difference between Bush and Gore. So they voted for Nader and elected George W. Bush.

It is always the same with the fringers. They are like an worm looking up at a mole hill and a mountain. To the worm they both look to be of the same height.

When Obama gets elected and gets the new fairness doctrine passed into law, the new media of talk radio will once again and internet sites like this one will be illegal too.

You could send JimRob a note to his prison cell but how would you know he was serving a long term in prison. The main stream media would not tell you.

And when the terrorists, no longer afraid of the USA, bombed some elementary schools near where you live, you could tell yourself a few hundred childrens lives were no big deal .... At least I didn't vote for that damned McCain.

And if you did post something just slightly negative about Obama, your lawyer would tell you to beg the judge for mercy. Not that your lawyer would think it would do you any good, He would just want the pleasure of watching you beg.

“Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., may be taking the suggestion of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and visit Iraq. However, Obama will not be joined by his opponent.”

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say if Obama does visit Iraq, one of more of the following will happen:

1) He’ll come back with a story about talking with many (anonymous) “average soldiers” who agree with his plans for withdrawal.

2) He’ll claim proof that the surge has had nothing to do with the success, it was really because of (Iran, Al-Sadr, Barry’s winning of the Democratic nomination, etc.)

3) He’ll claim his presence has brought Change (we can believe in) to Iraq and the militants have agreed to lay down their arms, if and only if he is elected in November.

This town hall thingy is just more dumbing-down of America. The real issues aren’t going to get discussed, but the same-old milquetoast liberal PC crap (student loans, tax credits for daycare, global warming etc) will.

Well said. I don’t get these dufus types that think they are making some big statement by not voting because they think McCain isn’t conservative enough. All they are doing is acting “liberal” and their non-vote will help put Hussein Obama into the White House. Everything you said is so true, I don’t want to hear these same fools whining later when the country has REALLY gone to hell and it won’t be McCain putting it there. It will be these same fools who will have helped Obama seal our doom.

Well said.

Pulling the lever for McCain doesn't appeal to me at all, but Obama and the cabinet he'll put together, along with a willing Congress full of Marxists scares the sh*t out of me.

Sadly, he's our only roadblock to a disaster.

That's it it in a nut shell. Four years of McCain has to be less bad for our country than four years of Obama. Had even Ron Paul won the nomination I would be voting for him so it is not that I'm happy, thrilled or in love with McCain...he is 100% better than Hillary or Obama.
