Broke his fall a little? FWIR, it is suggested that if one attempts to commit suicide by jumping off a building, jump from at least 8 stories in height to put you in the "envelope" for success.
Can't remember if it mentioned a preferred landing material, but I doubt a tree branch was in the mix.
As for the windows, I imagine that it is the bathrooms that are placed back-to-back to save on plumbing runs, and it was the architect's desire for symmetry that dictated the window placement.
