Complaint over MP's gay comments

A complaint has been made to police about comments made by a Northern Ireland DUP MP about gay people.

Iris Robinson, the chair of the Stormont health committee, called homosexuality an "abomination" and urged gay people to seek counseling.

John O'Doherty, a member of the South Belfast District Policing Partnership, said he has complained to police.

"People like Mrs. Robinson need to learn that their comments have consequences," he said.

This is the second complaint in relation to the Strangford MP's remarks.

Mrs Robinson made her comments on BBC Radio Ulster's Nolan Show on Friday.

She said she would defend her right to express religious beliefs, while also condemning violence against the gay community.

Jeffrey Donaldson, the DUP's Lagan Valley MP, said Mrs Robinson was entitled to express her views.

"This is a country where people have freedom of speech," he said.

"If someone has made a complaint then the matter will be investigated, I don't believe that Iris has broken any law so I don't believe the police investigation will lead to anything."

Mr. Donaldson, who is an executive junior minister responsible for equality, said that they would seek to ensure that no one was disciminated against.

Another "thought police" investigation in the UK. This time its an MP-Assembly Member in Northern Ireland.

Iris Robinson is known for her pro-life convictions and is also the wife of Peter Robinson, recently elected as First Minister of Northern Ireland replacing the retiring Ian Paisley.

So Iris spoke the truth and the gays are up in arms about it.

Well, their being offended will not change the truth, even if they somehow do silence Iris (which does not seem likely). IMHO, they should seek counseling for their unnatural behavior.

No harm in saying that...in fact it is quite compassionate of Iris.

Misleading headline. Should say "over MP's comments about gays". A gay comment would have been something like "Hey guys, wanna go see Sex And The City this weekend?" Or "I'm voting for change. I'm voting for Obama!"

What you said may have been true at one time,Mr Donaldson, but can you present us with a single shred of evidence that it's true today?

I agree wholeheartedly. Free speech seems to be a foreign concept in Europe and Canada.

The Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Home of "HE CALLED ME A NAME!"

Never mind the knife sticking out of your ribcage as you enter the Tube station.

This is a country where people have freedom of speech,

Is it really? They don't have a constitution that states that, so it could be changed at a politician's whim.

“freedom of speech” in England applies only to non-Whites and non-Christians.

Consequences? Sure! The gays have th eright to mock her. They have a right to vote against her or refuse to paatronize her business.

They don’t have a right to destroy their livelihood or have them jailed. That is for fascists, that is, the Left.
