McCain wooing conservatives in low-key way
UPI ^ | 6/9/08 | staff

Posted on 06/09/2008 12:56:27 PM PDT by pissant

McCain's campaign says it's ramped up efforts to rally Christian conservatives behind the presumptive Republican U.S. presidential nominee.

The campaign to get conservatives to the polls in 18 battleground states is low-key -- e-mailed messages and briefings of conservative leaders before McCain, R-Ariz., delivers key speeches, The New York Times reported Monday.

McCain's wooing of the conservative vote must be balanced against his appeal moderates and independents, political analysts said.

"Because the Republican brand name is less popular and the conservative base is restive, McCain has special needs to reach out to independent and moderate voters, but, of course, he can't completely neglect the evangelical and conservative base," John Green, a senior fellow at the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, told the Times.

Evangelicals played a key role electing in U.S. President George Bush, who doesn't shy from the role of religion in his life and used his faith his advantage in 2004. In contrast, McCain already in the 2008 presidential campaign distanced himself from two conservative ministers for anti-Islam and anti-Semitic remarks.

"For John McCain to be competitive, he has to connect with the base to the point that they're intense enough that they're contagious," Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said to the Times. "Right now they're not even coughing."

McCain wooing conservatives in low-key way

"F*** off, I don't need you" is a lot of things, but low-key isn't high on the list.

"McCain wooing conservatives in low-key way"

When they say "low key" do they mean invisible? Or is the middle finger now a "wooing" method?

Juan MeCain doesn't need no stinking Conservatives or Evangelicals!

No, he needs lots and lots of Democrats & other Democrats that call themselves Independents.

Just how are we to notice these apparent “come-hither” winks from McCain?

He must be using gay body language, as only liberals seem to respond to him.

So he basicly ignores us for five months and now he comes with his hat in his hand? And quietly at that? If he wins maybe he’ll even thank us in public.../Sarcasm

Maybe by "low-key" they mean declining to meet with Billy Graham, due to a "large volume of similar requests." I wonder what constitutes a request "similar" to meeting with Billy Graham, and how large a volume of such requests they have?

If Conservatives continue to with hold support and McCains numbers being what they are he will have to wooo us in a more forthright manner instead of undercover of darkness.

Several weeks ago McCain and his advisors said they didn’t the Conservative vote as it wasn’t that important any longer.

But now our vote is the deal clincher for him.

If he moves right of center I will vote McCain, otherwise he can rot in hades.

I saw today that Billy Graham had requested a meeting with McCain (as he has had with every President since Truman) and that McCain said "NO". He wouldn't agree to meet with him because he said his campaign has other issues of greater priority.

McCain can woo all he wants. This Christian boy ain't listening.

“If he moves right of center I will vote McCain,”

You mean his voting record counts for nothing and what he says during a campaign does count?

I’m going strictly by his voting record and couldn’t care less what he says now.

There’s no way I’ll vote for him.

Rush said that the NewsMax story about McCain not meeting with Billy Graham wasn’t true. It’s on your link.

After a little more research, it appears that the campaign stupidly sent a form letter to the guy trying to broker the meeting, rather than explaining that they were already in contact with Graham's family about a meeting.

No more or less than McCain. Indeed, I think McCain will be more effective in helping the liberals, as the Republicans will follow in lock step behind him.

It’s a slow death, compared to a fast death.

Actual Letter

It was "not true" after it was true. The link above is the actual letter. Now, I did some googling and found this as well....

After Backlash??

""The piece in Newsmax is false. Our campaign has been working directly with Reverend Franklin Graham's office to facilitate an important meeting between John McCain and Reverend Billy Graham. The report's implication that we have 'declined to meet with Billy Graham' is blatantly false, because our campaign has already been working directly with Franklin Graham's office and politely declined Mr. Jacobs' offer to help facilitate a meeting. John McCain has the highest respect for Reverend Billy Graham and looks forward to meeting with him in the future."

IF that were true, why didn't they just say that in the letter?

The contempt that McCain holds for us is palpable. I wonder why none of the media has emphasized that for the first time since the election of JFK we will be stuck with a senator no matter what. I don't count Johnson-he wasn't elected . Just senators from which to choose. No governors, nobody with any work experience. Why has no one in media said a word about no non government experience for any of these morons?
