“short and polite answer: no.”
thanks for the response.
just what i thought although i’m no horticulturist.
Bet money on the tainted tomatoes coming from Mexico.
Are you trying to imply c-Rations were not good for you? Don't you remember Ham with Lima Beans, etc. About one ton of grease to a 10 oz can! I kind of liked them, throw(actually tie them with wire) them on the exhaust of our M-48A1s(with holes punched in the top)and eat them about an hour later when they were good and hot!:) Still greasy as he** but who cares when your are in your 20s.:)
That seems odd, must come from different places?
susie
Then why the heck aren’t we doing it??
Is the salmonella inside the tomato, or on the surface outside?
Fresh Lima Beans aren't edible - I can't even imagine what the c-ration version was like. ;)
I can get them for free out of MEM but we don’t eat enough of them to have them shipped but thanks for the offer.
I just read something that said they haven’t determined which.
susie
you’re welcome. :)
If you suspected that this “myth” was “implied” by someone connected with a chemical fertilizer company, you might be right. ;) Actually, the truth is “you can’t get there from here” :)
The source of the outbreak hasn't been pinpointed, but the FDA said some states have been ruled out, so tomatoes of all types are safe if grown in Arkansas, California, Georgia, Hawaii, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Tomatoes grown in Belgium, Canada, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Israel, Netherlands and Puerto Rico are also deemed safe.
Florida tomatoes are safe to eat - agriculture commisioner says
Florida's agriculture commissioner said today that Florida-grown tomatoes have been deemed safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which warned about a multi-state salmonella outbreak that has sickened 145 people and left at least 23 hospitalized.
"I was confident Florida was not the problem and was not the source of the salmonella outbreak impacting other states," Commissioner Charles Bronson said. "Florida tomato growers have one of the most stringent tomato production programs in the nation."
Bronson said the FDA has added Florida tomatoes to its list of states with "safe to eat" tomatoes.
“At $4/LB who buys fresh tomatoes anymore... time to grow your own!”
with the price of food, we have planted our first veggie garden since we were young trying to eke out a living.
we call it our “Victory” garden as they did in WWII when huge amounts of food were shipped overseas and everyone at home encouraged to grow a “Victory” garden to help the war effort, to some degree.
“Is the salmonella inside the tomato, or on the surface outside?”
It’s on the outside - originally. Of course you don’t wash your contaminated tomato, slice it with a knife or slicer and then it’s on the inside of that tomato and everything else that blade comes in contact with before you clean the blade, etc, etc.
Those signs you see in grocery store, resturant, any “food-handing” bathroom, *requiring* employees to wash their hands before leaving are there for a reason. ;)
It was explained to me that the salad spinach that was contaminated could not be washed free of the contaminent, only heat could kill the bugs. I tried the USDA site but the language is so carefully written that it's kind of useless--
My wife sent me some email about MRSA in pork products. (Upon reading the entire article, it is no doubt possible in all agricultural meats).
Anyway - at the end of a very lengthy and scary article it says something like “Properly cooked pork is safe. It is the handling of the product that is dangerous. Always wash your hands, utensils and any surfaces that come into contact with the meat.” Well - duuhhh!?
Yup, a “weak bleach” solution *used* to be the “standard” in food handling.
I don’t know *who*’s working for the USDA these days, but the “heat” method also destroys the majority of the nutritional value of the food. ;)
that’s what i heard also. but, i’m going to buy some tomatoes and wash them well and gorge.
thanks for the response.
we need a bahmayta tax right away!!!
Oh, great. It's become a choice of feces or lead with our tomatoes.
Welcome to the new world order.
