Views on Confederacy may cost Webb VP nod By DAVID MARK | 6/10/08 6:35 PM EST Text Size: Jim Webb Webb, a descendent of Confederate officers, also voiced sympathy for the notion of state sovereignty as it was understood in the early 1860s. Photo: John Shinkle

Barack Obama’s vice presidential vetting team will undoubtedly run across some quirky and potentially troublesome issues as they go about the business of scouring the backgrounds of possible running mates. But it’s unlikely they’ll find one so curious as Virginia Democratic Sen. Jim Webb’s affinity for the cause of the Confederacy.

Webb is no mere student of the Civil War era. He’s an author, too, and he’s left a trail of writings and statements about one of the rawest and most sensitive topics in American history.

He has suggested many times that while the Confederacy is a symbol to many of the racist legacy of slavery and segregation, for others it simply reflects Southern pride. In a June 1990 speech in front of the Confederate Memorial at Arlington Memorial Cemetery, posted on his personal website, he lauded the rebels’ “gallantry,” which he said “is still misunderstood by most Americans.”

Webb, a descendent of Confederate officers, also voiced sympathy for the notion of state sovereignty as it was understood in the early 1860s, and seemed to suggest that states were justified in trying to secede.

OK. LOL!

If he was a Republican choice, every dem would be out with those quotes, running around, calling him a racist.

So I guess Strickland and Webb, two of the best choices they had, are out.

I smell a Klinton on ticket!

Bring it on!

Webb can write a hole paragraph and be called an author, he was a short timer for Reagen and his mental condition has gone down hill since he left that admin.Plus he denied us a great chance of an real candidate, all so he can go to Washington and flail about on the senate floor.

While I’m no Webb supporter I do agree with what is quoted here. The South had men fighting for it for many reasons, not just to perpetuate slavery as is so often portrayed.

A-men! While I don't care two cents for 99% Mr. Webb's political positions, he is 100% right on this issue. He is not advocating a return to slavery, but a return to more sovereignty at the state level. Of course, the liberals have all but succeeded in tanting anything and everything about the South with slavery.

First Black President Obama will give preemptive absolution to any white person as his running mate, be they Webb or anybody else, on racial subjects. Webb’s pro-Confederacy, pro-redneck credentials are what make him attractive to the Obamaniacs - they’re a plus in this context, to bring the God-and-gun clingers home. This analysis is all wet.

And if Webb's views on the Confederacy don't get him, his fiction will, eh?

“I don’t know why you’re reading that on WTOP,” Webb told host Mark Plotkin. “I think it’s a little bit inappropriate.” Plotkin was reading an excerpt from Webb’s novel “Something to Die For,” in which Webb describes a female stripper performing sexual acts with a banana. “I don’t think that’s appropriate for you to read on WTOP,” Webb said again as Plotkin finished the excerpt.

I just did an Amazon search on the passage in Webb’s book. It isn’t the least bit titillating. It’s in the context of an American in an exotic, backward, remote part of a foreign land. The penis-kissing scene baffles and bewilders the Americans. It is clearly not a “fellating.” It is not a depiction of pedophelia. It’s very obviously scene painting, and the shock and oddity of the act adds to the lead characters’ sense that they’re out-of-place.

Leaving aside, for the moment, that Webb isn't a Republican and that he's a jerk: If he were a Republican, you would not consider him qualified for the Vice-Presidency simply because of his ancestry?

Is that what you're saying?

He is qualified for VP because he meets the criteria as set forth in the 12th amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The other crap is about people fighting a war that ended 150 years ago (and which BTW, they lost)

But he’s certifiable in his bipolar like personality and he’s really stuck on this Scots Irish stuff. I think he’d be a perfect Veep for the haloed one. He’ll have a Sybil moment sometime in mid October and turn on the haloed one and explode in an incoherent rage on national TV. Nahh! He’s probably still ticked about losing that boxing match to Ollie North at the Academy.

Webb would be a shrewd Obama pick because he can counter balance McCain's Military record, but I think Obama will go with a female to try to pick up the votes that went to Hillary.

If the Obama people can spin his involvement with Rev. Wright they could easily deal with Webb's sentimental attachment to the Confederacy. If they rule him out on this ground it is merely a rationalization of what Obama wants to do anyway.

LOL! Hyperbole much? I get your point, though. Prejudice tends to run deep but I’m going to try to explain what it is you don’t understand anyway.

Confederate Memorial Day is the day we have our little family reunion. We meet at this little church cemetery where most of my family’s burial plots are, going back to just before the Civil War. There are two graves of Confederate soldiers who were my ancestors that I visit.

Imagine for a moment what it’s like to look at graves of your dead relatives, probably good men who simply answered a call, then tell me what I should feel. Am I not to honor their duty and courage simply because of they died on the wrong side of history? Because they made their home in a state that seceded from the Union?

I asked myself those questions and many more as a younger man while visiting those graves. To get the answers, I had to find out more about my family history. It is, in short, a history of a very poor, rural people who worked the log-woods and at times right along-side slaves and freemen. The closest neighbors for miles were black. That remained true until the 60’s. Most of our passed down Southern recipes originated in a black house-hold.

Now why then would by ancestors feel compelled to fight in the war? Perhaps they were conscripted or perhaps they joined out of a sense of duty. I don’t know. Either way, I bear no grievances towards them. They have my respect. I take a sense of duty in adopting their spirit, if you will. Their nature. Their willingness to give the powers that be the finger. The rebel in them.

Given all that, blacks and whites live, work and play in closer quarters here than pretty much anywhere else in the country. My mayor is black. I’m not sure what the problem is with folks who share your opinion.

We had the brains, y’all had the brawn. Sooner or later, the brawn was going to win. :)

Webb’s views on the WBTS are not radical, and they’re actually consistent with his whole Scots-Irish “Born Fighting” shtick. He’s all about honoring his heritage and ancestors and whatnot, as are millions of other Americans on both sides of the Recent Unpleasantness. Nothing wrong there.

But he’s also “Born Idiot,” a political opportunist moron with a temper that makes McCain look like he’s on Quaaludes. It’s a miracle he didn’t shoot his mouth off and say something idiotic during his Senate campaign—in fact, he might’ve, but we never heard about it because the MSM and political pundits were too busy drowning the Old Dominion in hundreds of worthless George Allen “macaca” stories, and inventing lies about him putting severed deer heads in black families’ mailboxes forty years ago.

If the Obamessiah picks Webb, Born Idiot will need such careful and controlled media handling, they might as well wrap him in bubble wrap before sending him out in front of cameras. Even a friendly MSM and all the spin doctors in the Democratic Party might not be able to save him from himself.

Webb a “damn good author”? Right.

“Lost Soldiers: “A shirtless man walked toward them along a mud pathway. His muscles were young and hard, but his face was devastated with wrinkles. His eyes were so red that they appeared to be burned by fire. A naked boy ran happily toward him from a little plot of dirt. The man grabbed his young son in his arms, turned him upside down, and put the boy’s penis in his mouth.”

Bantam Books, NY, 1st Edition, 2001, (hard cover), page 333.
Quote is from para. 10,.Chap. 34.

– Something to Die For: “Fogarty . . . watch[ed] a naked young stripper do the splits over a banana. She stood back up, her face smiling proudly and her round breasts glistening from a spotlight in the dim bar, and left the banana on the bar, cut in four equal sections by the muscles of her vagina.”

William Morrow and Company, Inc., NY 1991, 1st Ed. (hardcover), p. 36.
Avon Books, New York, 1992 (Mass-Market paperback edition), p. 35
Quote is from para. 29, Chap. 2 “The South China Sea,”, Section 2”

http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/archives/2006/10/jim_webbs_dirty_books

(And the bloomin’ idiot had an aide try to smuggle a handgun (probably a wussy-wuss .380 or 9mm) past Capitol security in the spring of ‘07, and then refused to claim the gun as his own for quite a while! That aide shoulda bought a decent-sized gun and shot little Jimmy Webby with that one.)
