7 people arrested for cheering at graduation

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Authorities say seven people attending high school graduations in Rock Hill, South Carolina, are facing charges after police say they cheered while students' names were being called.

Authorities say six people at Fort Mill High School's graduation were charged Saturday and a seventh at the graduation for York Comprehensive High School was charged Friday with disorderly conduct.

Police say those arrested yelled after students' names were called while diplomas were handed out.

A police spokesman says school officials request police patrols to prevent graduation disruptions that include standing, hollering and clapping.

He says those attending the commencements are told their behaviour can be prosecuted.

Rock Hill is about 110 kilometres north of Columbia, South Carolina.

“Arrested????” Sheesh....it would be MUCH more creative if they just fined them $100 for each cheer......just like putting Martha Stewart in prison, this is ridiculous!

"Somebody’s got a pic?"

Take a pencil and draw a face.

Next take a felt pen and draw a box around the face.

Then take the felt marker and draw verticle lines inside the box, dividing it into four equal parts.

Got the picture now?

Meanwhile, in the nation's capital in March, a gang of thugs can close down DC streets and bombard citizens, police and government buildings with paint bombs, and NOTHING happens.

WAKE UP AMERICA!!!

Well, I have to say that the Libs who want to be best friends with their kids instead of parents are reaping what they have sown. Classless ingoramusses who think that dignity is passe' and it's their right to ruin the graduation experience for most of the others attending. I can guarantee that those kids don't have Conservative parents. That being said, jail is a bit extreme for ignorance. Hefty fines would be a good alternative.

They did that at my son’s HS graduation also but not to this extreme. The police went after some people but nobody was arrested, they were just told to keep quiet until everyone got their diplomas.

Good grief! When our son graduated from U of A, Tuscaloosa, AL,one man (presumably student's father) yelled "Praise the Lord" after the name was read, followed by laughing. There were several other brief yells or cheers and some clapping. Graduations are glad times and family times.

I can see not allowing obscenities, prolonged yelling, and stomping, but this sounds ridiculous.

So many really stupid things being perpetrated on the folks these days. Cannot help believing it is because of the types running the education systems.

No, your comment is what is ridiculous. There is NO COMPARISON between the two. Martha got what she deserved according to a jury of her peers. But, kids arrested for cheering? That, too, is ridiculous.

Let’s see, they can’t arrest the graduate for being popular, so they line the crowd with cops to arrest those that cheer for acknowledging it.

High school graduations seem to have adopted a NBA game mentality.
I went to my first one in 30 years this spring. I just don't get the parents desire to scream out when their kid walks across the stage.
Getting a diploma is expected, screaming about it shows a lack of manners in my opinion.

Save the yelling for the graduation party; or better yet, for when the kid gets their PhD.

I don't think arrested means carried off to jail. They probably received citations. The last graduation I went to was embarrassing. People standing up and yelling something like “She be my baby” while many were trying to video the event.

Just this last Sunday I attended my nieces graduation in a small town in the midwest. We cheered when she was handed her diploma. Others cheered when their friends and family members received their diploma. No police were present, and no one was arrested.

What the heck is going on with these educators and police in Rock Hill, S.C.? Are they all insane?

To call this stupid is falling way short of the insipid liberal crack kissing stupidity running through government schools and a serious mis use of both personnel and the law. The schools administration needs to be take out and summarily publicly fired and run out of town and told to not return ever. The cops should not even have been there.

Practically sacred. We certainly shouldn't have fun at them or celebrate.

You know what drives this, don't you? Some kids might get more applause or cheers than others.

And that wouldn't be sensitive.

It's why some sports leagues don't keep actual score in baseball or soccer games. It wouldn't be SENSITIVE.

I imagine you don't like cheering at sporting events, either. It shows some favoritism, and that's just not polite. All cheering should wait until all athletes have left the stadium.

If it was anything like the graduation I attended five years ago, I’m glad they were arrested.

I was appalled at the yelling, clapping, stomping,, constant walking around, and general dispuption and disrespect for the graduates’ families and friends. I couldn’t believe how bad it was. I’m glad I don’t have any family members graduating now.

I felt sorry for those there to celebrate their graduate and ashamed of those acting like it was mud wrestling contest.

I have seven children, mostly older......and have attended more than my share of graduations.

I mean h.s., college, post-grad....

..and it has been my experience that blacks cannot seem to control themselves during such ceremonies. Racism......screw that; I’m speaking from personal experience. It is as if they simply are incapable of controlling themselves.

I couldn't agree more. Two weeks ago I attended graduation for Little Rock Central, it was awful. Over 600 kids to be named for Scholarships then for Diplomas. They begged families to not disrupt but they ignored the pleas. It took over 3 hours to complete.

The disrespect wasn't just toward Administration either, one girl near me refused to stand for the National Anthem. I bet she still has a hole burned in her head from me glaring.

“You all back East have stepford kids. Go to a graduation in CA and it’s like a party..as it should be.”

No, kids are expected to graduate. People shouldn't go nuts and cheer for every student at a HS graduation like a college basketball game.
The cheering is similar to a mediocre football team who's fans storm the field when they rarely win.

The parents should expect their kids to do well. Kids coming out of a good high school don't need NBA types of cheers just because they did what was expected.

As I said previously; save it for the graduation party.

I was not at this particular graduation, so I can’t judge. But at my daughter’s graduation, names were not read in alphabetical order. The audience was specifically asked NOT to call out or cheer because of the hundreds of graduates they needed to get through. No good. The mannerless crowd acted like animals. We could not hear our own daughter’s name being called due to all of the prolonged hooting, hollering, and air horns. As a result, we very nearly missed our daughter getting her diploma. All the kids look alike up there dressed in their caps and gowns. You need to be able to hear the name. Yes, graduations are happy times and deserve celebration. Save your hooting and hollering for the graduation party. Thank you.

Yeah, I was pretty angry that day. I was standing behind them. Red paint that won't come out of my jacket, off my shoes or the flag I had with me. I asked the officers why they didn't nail the thugs. The DC police chief ordered them to stand down. The commies sued them a couple years back so now they just run wild in the streets destroying whatever they feel like that day.
