MaureenDowd: Mincing Up Michelle
NYT ^ | June 11th, 2008 | Maureen Dowd

Posted on 06/10/2008 9:45:39 PM PDT by The_Republican

Hillary and Bill are busy updating their enemies lists. And Obama is racking his brain trying to figure out where to stash his erstwhile rival.

If a President Obama put her on the Supreme Court, of course, we would have the infinite fun of hearing Bill rant about how Scalia, Alito, Thomas and Roberts were dissing Hillary.

It’s good news for Obama that Hillary’s out of the race. But it’s also bad news. Now Republicans can turn their full attention to demonizing Michelle Obama. Mrs. Obama is the new, unwilling contestant in Round Two of the sulfurous national game of “Kill the witch.”

There are some who think it will be harder for America to accept a black first lady — the national hostess who serenely presides over the White House Christmas festivities and the Easter egg roll — than a black president.

There are creepy Web sites, like TheObamaFile.com, dedicated to painting Michelle as a female version of Jeremiah Wright, an angry black woman, the disgruntled, lecturing “Mrs. Grievance” depicted on the cover of National Review.

On that site and others around the Internet, the seamy rumors still slither that there’s a tape of Michelle denouncing “whitey,” a rumor that Barack Obama disdained last week as “scurrilous.”

E.D. Hill, the Fox anchor who said that the celebrated fist pump between Michelle and her husband the night he snagged the nomination could be called a “terrorist fist jab,” apologized Tuesday.

In their narrative of how Hillary lost in The Times on Sunday, Jim Rutenberg and Peter Baker said that Mark Penn argued that Hillary should subtly stress Obama’s “lack of American roots.”

That’s a good preview of how Republicans will attack Michelle, suggesting that she does not share American values, mining a subtext of race.

All you have to do is just state what she says. I guess in Dowdtown NYC that is demonizing.

This race obsession of liberals is beyond bizarre. I hear them going on about it endlessly at work, always assuming everyone but them is a racist, sexist homophobe who will never vote for a woman or a black man.

Whereas, we conservatives couldn’t give a tinker’s damn about such crapola, we care about a candidate’s adherence to conservative principles and demonstrated competence.

I don’t care if the President and First Lady have purple polka dots...I care more about the character of the couple in the WH. Granted GWB has not done a lot of things that conservatives approve of. But when it comes to decorum and gentlemanly behaviour coupled with the gracious First Lady one cannot help but like them even if one disagrees with the President. In Texas, those democrats who did not agree with the then Gov Bush nonetheless admired them as a couple and had a real genuine fondness for “Miss Larua” as she was called.
The Obama pair will not enhance the WH or the view of the country..it will be like putting the Beverly Hills Hillbillys in the WH not because they are black ( or his case half black) but because of the manner in which they conduct themslves with the new style dapping etc...
They will disgrace the WH just as the Clintons did, just in a different way.

I think that everytime one talks about Michelle Obama, there should be a side-by-side photo of her and Cindy McCain. Let’s just put it out there - who do you want as your next first lady? Obama’s wife who is the next Hillary “2 for 1” type political wife, or Cindy McCain who says very little and what she does say is PRO-American. And who by all accounts, has DOUBLED the profit of her dad’s company in the mere 8 years since she took it over. Oh, and most of all, she goes overseas to help care for children in other countries and helps get them medical care. She’s no saint, but I think she’s definitely an asset MCCain should be utilizing on the campaign trail more and more.

Actually, I thought that black first lady line was the only true thing in the piece, even though I don’t think it
was Maureen’s own observation. I think America would have particular troubler accepting THIS particular black woman as the First Lady, and her husband as President, and that’s the ONLY thing we’re talking about.
The whole manufactured issue of “because they’re black” is a diversion from looking squarely at who these two INDIVIDUALS are. Both Obamas and the surrogates who speak on their behalf, and spin publicly, have been promulgating, sometimes subtly, sometimes not, that Americans are being given a chance, one last golden chance to prove we’re not racist, and the only way to do that is to vote for Obama. He is put forth as a living referendum on our “racism”, and it would be foolish to underestimate
how much of a hold this conceit has already taken on our subconscious minds. Some of us , at least.. What a sad, sick joke.

My impression of Mrs. OBama is that she wears the pants in that family and is a newer version of Hillary Clinton. I was already jaded by her personality that finds reasons to be aggrieved at even the prosperity she and her husband enjoy. Her put upon attitude at having to pay her student college loans even tho it was her choice to accept the money has now translated into candidate OBama promising free college for any and all students. It was a small and picky thing that showed me she is not ready for first lady duties. I saw the OBamas eating a meal in public, with cameras grinding away, and she reached across OBama, as tho he was not there, to get some food item. Not only bad manners but disrespectful to her husband who did not seem to notice because he apparently is used to that kind of behavior from her. I think she is not up to being the White House hostess. I have no sympathy for her on any count.

There are a number of traditional posting rules on FR.

One has to do with the fact that Michael Douglas dumped Maureen Dowd for Catherine Zeta-Jones. So to celebrate this turn of good fortune for Mr. Douglas, there is a rule that all MoDo threads must be accompanied by pictures of CZJ.

There's a thread that explains all that, I'll try to find it. In the meantime, enjoy!

The whole manufactured issue of “because they’re black” is a diversion from looking squarely at who these two INDIVIDUALS are.

Well, it's not so manufactured. The issue noone talks about is that black-america wants the benefits of power and money that flow from living in a wealthy, work-based society but to retain things that have become uniquely black and that are, in many ways, inconsistent with acquiring wealth and power.

For example, the stigma in the black community on "acting white" is actually a stigma on working hard, showing up on time, and doing all the boring things middle class people do to earn a living. It is not so much "white" behavior that is abhorred, it is behavior typical of middle class people of any color. "White" is just the epithet used by leftists to describe this behavior. Black nationalists like the Obama's and the Wrights and the Farrakhans etc want the benefits of being "white" without the hassle of acting "white."

Similarly, there is a taboo in "white" society on stupid conspiracy theories, incendiary racist rhetoric, and hateful behavior. No such taboo exists in black society, from all appearances. They expect a pass on stupid, racist and hateful behavior because they are black. Obama wants to take power and not give up the warped view of the universe that comprises black nationalism.

So I agree with you that it has nothing to do with the color of Obama's skin (Thomas Sowell would have my enthusiastic vote). But it does have to do with his cultural "blackness." And it is not a diversion from looking, not at the individuals, but at what comprises "black" culture. It is a perfectly legitimate question to ask whether we want someone who does not share "white" cultural values to be president, especially given the defects the last six months have made public about what is, apparently, mainstream black culture.

Unlike her husband, who wrote in his memoir that he had learned at a young age to smile and charm and disarm whites of the notion that he might be a bristly black militant, Michelle has not always hidden her jangly opinions so well. She has spent more time dwelling on the ways in which society can pull down the less privileged and refers a lot to a callous but unnamed “They.”

According to the Liberals, Michelle is now 1,372 on the list of:

"Forbidden Topics About Obama That Republicans CANNOT Talk About!"

I can’t disagree with anything you said there, but you picked up my phrase “because they’re black” and used it later in the post in a context I didn’t postulate. My use of it ties in with what to me is and has been a continuum in the way in which our “universe of discourse” is limited, and thus our perceptions are altered in even thinking about these issues, where blacks are involved, blacks who are or want to be “players” in American Political Life”. Obama just pops up as the biggest, most definitive, most “hopeful” POlitical Player yet,as seen by some (guilty white Liberals AND non-guilty Black Player/activist/performers like Louie F. Jesse J., Sharpy,
Jerry Wright, et. al. Some of them, integrated into the
“mainstream” media universe for a long time now, have learned well how far they can get by “acting white”, some like Jeremiah Wright, perform as Black Minstrels to audiences of the faithful, which include, ironically, as a
Co-Star, Fr. Pfleger, who has learned well how to “act black”. So, the point you brought up seems incidental to me, of far more interest to me is this phenom I delineated earlier, the Obama ticket is being used as a nationwide cultural/ethnic referendum on whether we are a racist society or not, and he and only he (and his lovely wife)can save us (in the eyes of the world) from that charge and that stigma. In the same way, the long reign of Bubba Clinton was largely used as a referendum of “The Hip vs. The Square”. The Dem Left just desires now to shed all that “sex” stuff that clung to Clinton the way it did to Monica’s blue dress, and exchange it for a far riskier attachment to a character far more dangerous than the Clinton’s ever were.

I don't think you can separate these two issues. Yes, that's the way BO is posing the issue, along with his shills in the media. But that's actually not the issue at all. Does anyone doubt that Colin Powell could have been elected president, either as a rat or a Republican?

But Powell is a different can of worms. BO is from a particular subculture of blacks. That subculture includes bling, Wright, Farrakhan, crips and bloods, high school students scared of studying and being seen to act "white", Oprah, and millions of angry government employees (the principal employer of middle class blacks). It is a subculture of anger, entitlement, excuses for non-performance, and left-wing extremism. It is a subculture that delights in alternately frightening whites by aggressive personal acts and then pulling the wool over whitey's eyes by "acting non-threatening" and being neat and clean, as BO puts it in his book. It is a Nietzschian subculture with strong strains of endorsed corruption, self-celebration, and get what you can by whatever means. Yes, that subculture is a continuum. It is a subculture that thinks it's members are entitled to the wealth and power they see around them; but are unwilling to get married to raise children or to make their kids study or teach them how to show up at work every day and on time so that they can do the things to get that wealth and power. With a very few exceptions like Bill Cosby, those that do get married and raise their kids properly won't condemn the culture that produces the extraordinary dropout, illegitimacy, drug abuse, criminal, and unemployment rates. No, BO is not a gang banger or a criminal. But the black subculture he endorses (or at least fails to condemn) is a continuum. And he is decisively a member of that continuum.

The question this year is not whether we will elect someone with black skin and get absolution--although as you correctly point out, that is the way the media poses the issue. It is whether we will elect someone with black skin who embraces and will not leave that subculture behind. Will America, for the first time, elect someone as president who actively rejects most salient features of white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant culture? Because that is what BO and Wright and Farrakhan really mean by acting "white."

The issue will be very muddled because noone is allowed to say the things I say in this post in public discourse. No one can point out that the black subculture BO belongs to is very different in its values, culture, and goals than the Anglo-Saxon culture that has made America what it is. No one can point out that a lot of parts of that subculture are really messed up. BO wants it muddled up so that our lack of clarity about what the issue really is is all tied up with racism.

But it isn't. This would be a complete non-issue if Colin Powell, Clarence Thomas or Thomas Sowell were the candidate. Why? Because they are not part of the black-nationalist subculture.

Obama doesn’t frighten me so much on the domestic scene as you described it (how could he effectuate even MORE legitimacy for the many-tentacled black subculture than it already has, and that the MSM has been only to happy to grant it for years now? Have you noticed in the last few years the Big Sell Job perpetrated by MSM and their corporate allies on a character as odious as Snoop Dog?
Have you noticed the ascendancy of Hip Hop and the ongoing and apparently undying tenacity of “Rap??” No, I don’t think Obama could outdo our “First Black President”, who was Bill Clinton, who invited the Crips and Bloods into the WHite House at the Inauguration....so I don’t see anything practical Obama could do or would feel he has to do to further the decline of white culture-—he certainly won’t do anything to arrest the way the black culture I speak of is jostling “mainstream white” culture for dominance. This to me is the most disheartening development of the last 20 years culturally.
Of course, there’s also the ever-present issue of an Obama
Presidency and how it would handle new Judgeships and SUpreme Court appointments. That, as Fr. Guido Sarducci used to say, would be nothing “to sneeze your nose at.”
NO, Obama’s biggest threat to me is his Jimmy Carter Redux
position on everything EXCEPT popular culture, his America Last way of seeing the rest of the world. But of course, his election as President would “put us right” with all those the Left worries now hate us.
