France: Muslim couple fined for barring male doctor

LYON, France • A French Muslim couple who sued a hospital after their son was born heavily handicapped were instead fined 1,000 euros yesterday for refusing the presence of a male doctor during labour.

Mohammed Ijjou was born severely handicapped on November 8, 1998 as a result of neurological complications during birth.

According to the appeal court ruling, his father Radouane Ijjou physically barred a male intern from entering his wife's room for half an hour, citing religious reasons, after a midwife asked for help with the labour.

My sister lived in Amsterdam and told of an incident where a Muslim man told the Dr that his wife couldn’t take her pants off to deliver a baby. Apparently he managed to prevent the delivery to the point his wife almost died until finally he relented.

When you walk in a clinic in France, where I live, reception sends you to Dr. Smith or Dr. Dupont. After half an hour or so you go into the consultation room and see Ms Dr. Smith or Ms Dr. Dupont standing there, smiling away. And you just know things are going to go wrong. Radouane should have been warned! It’s outrageous they’re allowed to practice in France, the staff constantly overlook their errors.
