National Guard Will Be Withdrawn From Unsecured Border

(CNSNews.com) - Members of Congress are split on whether the National Guard should end its deployment along the U.S.-Mexico border in July, as planned.

On Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff predicted the border would not be secured until 2011. (See earlier story)

The Guard built 38.1 miles of new fencing, 18.5 miles of new roads, 94.5 miles of vehicle barriers and repaired 717 miles of road.

The final withdrawal for the National Guard working in Operation Jump Start is planned for July 15.

The National Guard's Noller said that Operation Jump Start is winding down because of a presidential directive. As in all military operations, he said, about 150 guardsmen will remain for administrative duties after the mission ends.

As of June 11, 2,284 Guard members were on active duty at the border.

At its peak, Operation Jump Start -- which began in June 2006 -- involved 6,000 members of the Guard on a two-year mission to provide military assistance and equipment to the Border Patrol in states bordering Mexico.

The Border Patrol, in the meantime, has strengthened its presence at the border.

Randal Noller, a public affairs officer for the National Guard Bureau, told Cybercast News Service that as of June 4, the Guard had helped Customs and Border Protection apprehend 176,000 illegal aliens, seize 1,116 vehicles, intercept 315,744 pounds of marijuana and seize 5,225 pounds of cocaine.

The Guard does not make actual arrests of illegal border crossers, but only aids Border Patrol personnel.

Rep. James Moran (D-Va.), meanwhile, expressed support for ending the mission.

Most of the Democrats would prefer The National Guard to be in their barracks counting their toes.

I don't see our republican "leaders" rushing to defend our borders either.

Exactly, the few conservatives that are left in the U.S. Congress are alone and being marginalized by the liberals of the left and of the right. They are now all living in a bubble world of political myth and fables created and maintained by the fools of the new world order.
Where is the third party conservative candidate we need to vote for and how come the F.R. has given up on conservatism by voting for the liberal McCain.

I’m not a “new world order” guy, but I do believe that Capitol Hill is pathetically out of touch with the rest of the country.

We badly need a new party - and this time let’s leave out the “values” and social issues and stick with the simple issue of practical governance.

Conservatism and the GOP have been utterly fractured by the distractions foisted upon us by the Values Voters, “Social Conservatives” (aka not-Conservatives), and the politicans who play upon these emotional and quasi-religious issues.

Where has that gotten us in the last 40 years?

Conservatism must be brought back to our longstanding traditions of limited government, fiscal responsibility, the rule of law, and personal freedom. The rest is a distraction that has ripped Conservatism and the GOP to shreds (e.g. McQueeg D-AZ For President, and I rest my case).

In Arizona the Border Patrol is a corrupt institution. The National Guard effort was in many ways a waste of time. If illegal immigation is down in Arizona it is thanks to a legislature determined to penalize those who hire illegals, and a law enforcement officer, Joe Arpaio. in Maricopa County, who will actually enforce the laws. As for John McCain, he will protect ANWAR with his life, but finds nothing wrong with the trashing of the pristine Sonora Desert by thousands of illegals. Poor America. The fact that we even tolerate such second class politicians as McCain and Obama (or Bush and Kerry, or Bush and Gore, or Bush and Bill Clinton) is emblematic of a great nation’s decline.
