When you see younger people than you dying, it does tend to have an impact.

Makes me want to head to the nearest gym.

Don’t over-do it.Our town had a 51 year old guy who was supposed to be in excellent shape die last week. Got off his bicycle after an easy ride and dropped dead on his lawn.

Maybe exercise is overrated to some degree, especially for someone that is not used to it.

Tim Russert was on the treadmill this morning. It seems he was getting on a program to become more physically fit.

He had a stress test on April 29th.

A stress test consists of walking real fast on a tread mill for about 6 minutes. Or with drugs that open up all your veins and arteries. (quite painful)

Plus, you have to be off of your medication that keeps your blood pressure and heart rate from getting to high. (I expressed my concern to my cardiologist about the stress test causing someone to have a heart attack, and he said no. Hmmmm)

IMO, stress tests are overrated as Russert apparently passed with flying colors. About 6 weeks ago.

I wonder if his doctors gave him an echocardiogram because of the information out now that he had an enlarged heart. One of the results of an echocardiogram is finding out the size of the heart. You would think he should have had one of those, and if he did they would have known about the enlarged heart. (Maybe they did, and were treating it)

Fistalk, I'm wondering why they didn't do a heart cathertization (roter rooter for the arteries if clogged)and a stent if needed?

It also is used to measure the % of blockage in an artery.

I saw or read that one version of the problem is that cholesterol burst (or caused bursting) in his arteries or heart.

Well, I’m a lurker here mostly for the last few years, I never speak up I just watch, you guys are a great source of information for me, if I want to know the news, I always look at Free Republic first because all of you moniter the news so well. You’re better than Drudge! Anyway, I am definitely Republican to the bone, Conservative to the Core! Tim Russert has mostly been fair! I believe that he was 98% fair! He was one of the last people in this country, to let both sides speak, he obviously loved his family, his church and his country. You can’t find a better man than that. To those who say he was biased, aren’t we all, to those that say he was prefrential, aren’t we all? I can’t imagine, never letting my feelings out, so the other side can speak their beliefs. I’m really bad about not being impartial. I believe that Tim Russert was. I believe he was a good man who loved his country! I never post my opinions because there are those out there that just want to argue. People can say such hateful things when they don’t have to look a person in the eye while they are saying it. I just wanted to air my feelings, I’m glad I had a place to do it. By the way, I remember the Morning in America commerical, I was 18 years old and it made me want to vote. That ad made every American want to be a part of this country! Mr. Russert in this clip did say what we all felt!

Wow, sorry to hear that.

It’ kinda bizarre, because my Doctor wants me to take it to see if there is any problem with my heart.

Doesn’t seem very reliable if you ask me.

I’ve been putting off my next stress test.

I don’t want to ever do the chemical one again.

So I decided to “train” for it, and now have a knee problem that has to be fixed.

I think it happened so I could make the decision not to take the stress test.

Again, sorry about the loss of your Father at such a young age.

NBC news now has nothing that resembles integrity.

* I think Lisa Myers still works for NBC News, and she's the one who did the Juanita Broaddrick rape story about Bill Clinton. Myers showed courage and determination in getting that report on the air against a sitting impeached president who views women as his slaves.

* Chuck Todd seems pretty credible and fair on msNBC, and Russert played a major role in getting him on TV.

* Lester Holt, who anchors the Weekend Today Show and the Weekend Evening News on NBC, seems to do a pretty good job.

* Amy Robach and Michelle Kosinski are really fun to look at and don't seem to be overly liberal.

* And then there's Chris Matthews, whose mostly liberal ideology doesn't stop him from unleashing frequent zingers against the corrupt Clintons.

Having said all that, Tim Russert cannot be replaced. His amazingly tough interview of Gore running mate Joe Lieberman just before the 2000 election may have prevented a Gore triumph.

Russert was usually too soft when interviewing Bill and Hillary, but he did ask Hillary some tough questions in the last debate he moderated.

Russert was a very good role model for a lot of the reporters at NBC News. His journalistic and life legacy will live on through some of them.

I saw Olbermann for the first time last night, the last five minutes of the show. He is loathesome. The way he disgustedly turns away from the camera, muttering, “Good night and ... good luck” is egomaniacal and cynical. Murrow oughta sue him from beyond the grave.

Rest in peace, Tim, and many prayers for you and your family. I often disagreed with him, but could always tell he was a decent man and a loving family man.

A cardiologist has confirmed he died from a clot that broke loose from the left anterior descending artery.

I guess the configuration of this artery allows some fairly large clots to build up without disrupting blood flow - but if they break loose, you’re pretty much SOL. It’s called “the widowmaker” and is the same condition that killed my dad when he was 50.

My father, uncle, and grandfather had heart attacks. I think the arterial disease that causes clots takes years to develop. If someone is Mr. Russert's age (about the same age as me), I would go easy on a new regimen and see your doctor about it first. If one is in his twenties or thirties, I'd think long and hard about the traditional American diet and lack of exercise.

Most, not all, but most, of these tragedies can be prevented. Bacon and eggs for breakfast, burgers and fries for lunch, fried chicken with potatoes and gravy for dinner, and donuts and chips for snacks, along with sitting at a desk most of the day, does not work.

Sorry for the preaching. I just feel so bad for the surving family, and it seems like such a waste that much of what we know about prevention is ignored by most people.

Rest in peace Tim Russert and may God bless him and his family.

It's a dangerous, dangerous condition. Few if any symptoms.

Mt dad was a long haul trucker. They found him later in the day on the morning he died, he had been sitting at a table in a motel in the morning, drinking coffee with the eternal cigarette.

Face down on the table. The cigarette was still between his fingers, but had burned down and burned out. He didn't even have time to react, to reach out to his side or clutch his chest.

Hope I go quick.
Just not soon.

I would think that Russert had the best medical care available. That makes me very nervous. We get the impression that there are such ‘obvious’ ways to prevent this, but I wonder about that, especially when a lot of the statins come under scrutiny.

Usually, if a younger person has a heart attack it is more likely to be fatal.

Synco,

You’ve addressed so many issues that I did in my rather longish post.

First, you question why Tim didn’t get a stent. I asked the same thing. Recall that I saw his doctor and his doctor said that Tim had “CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE”. Plus he’s taking a stress test WITH CAD...so the medicos were checking up on something.

In fact, the stress test is how I found out I had CAD. They had to chemically speed up my heart. In my post I stated that I had to be rushed to the hospital FROM the stress test because....well I didn’t have a heart attack but that entire doctor’s office was scared shitless and the doctor was ghostly white. I was screaming from the pain. Like you, I’m not convinced a stress test can’t actually cause a heart attack. Yeah, the talking points are that Tim passed the stress test with flying colors but in view of his death, I wonder as to the veracity of this statement.

As for an echocardiogram, as I stated in my post, I had only been undergoing a medical protocol for my heart in the month of April of this year and this because my heart would suddenly go into a rapid heartbeat session that at times lasted for hours. An echocardiogram was part of that month-long protocol which included blood tests and other things until the day of the stress test which almost killed me.

Hey, I didn’t believe EVERY vein into my heart was clogged. I thought the rapid heartbeat thing was caused by a thyroid issue. What did I know?

As for the choloresterol breaking off and killing him, you are exactly right. The danger from those clogged arteries is that a piece of plaque will break off and totally clog the blood path to the heart of perhaps destroy the artery as is alleged to happen to Tim.

And again, as in my original post, what with Tim taking stress tests and his death from runaway plaque, I wonder if he KNEW about his clogged arteries but refused to undergo a coronary bypass. A coronary bypass is a very big operation and it takes quite a while for recovery, believe me, I know.

The guy was taking stress tests, he didn’t get a stent...why? A stent insertion is an in-out thing and it does not require a long recovery. If Tim had a stent we’d know about it. We knew about his foot operation.

I’m thinking he wasn’t qualified for a stent insertion. That doc told me my veins were so clogged that a stent was not an option; that it was impossible to save those arteries. The medicos were amazed that I managed to live with my totally clogged arteries.

Don’t forget that I myself left the hospital, just for the weekend, against medical advice. They couldn’t schedule my bypass surgery until the following Monday and I wasn’t going to spend a weekend in a hospital, no I was not.

But the doc didn’t let me out and you know why? Because he was deathly afraid a piece of placque would come loose from my heart arteries and ....kill me.

I’m thinking it’s possible that Tim Russert refused coronary bypass surgery, hoping it could be controlled medically. Sometimes CAD can be controlled but they usually only do it on people who are bad candidates for surgery. It’s not a normal or the best medical protocol for coronary artery disease.

IMHO, it wouldn’t hurt to track their associations in this period.

If Hillary is indeed out of the picture, IMHO, I doubt she has stopped thinking about it and sincerely blaming and ferociously causing harm to those who she might feel aided or abetted in her less than stellar performance.

Additionally, I suspect she is still planning a comeback and wouldn’t hesitate taking action against those elements she perceives as being in her way to power.

There were times when Russert approached fair and balanced....................................

His very last “ Meet The Press” last Sunday...he had a all democrat panel, I believe with him it was 6 or 7 democrats, no Republicans, infact this week he never even had a pretend Republican on.

I am sorry he died also!!! GOD BLESS TIM! but do we always have to rewrite history every time one of these guys died?

Same thing happened when Peter Jennings died....all of a sudden he was this fair journalist...I was also sad he died.

Tim Russert was on the wrong side of the most serious issues the world has ever faced.

Wolf Blitzer said Tim was a “devout Catholic” whatever that means? Obviously he was at odds with Catholic doctrine and the Bible. Abortion etc

He was a democrat, he worked for Democrats he supported Democrats and he voted Democrat.

He bore false witness against President Bush, and Dick Cheney.

Having the most popular show on political television, he gave more air time to anti war, anti truth, probably putting more US troops in greater danger. even costing lives.

Yes God Bless Tim Russert!!!!!

lets not re write history.

He could have been on the right side of so many things, he could have made a difference.

There are many people who would think nothing of bearing false witness and giving false testimony under oath in court. Russert was an honorable man and a devout Catholic. He was on the other side of the aisle and advocated for his views, but he was a happy warrior for his side. I do not believe he would breach his honor by giving false testimony in court.

Libby was befuddled and confused about minor things because he had so much serious to contend with. Or he was afraid that Cheney had been the one to talk to Novak and he was falling on his sword for Cheney.

I don’t believe that Russert lied under oath in court. He may have been one of the last of the “loyal opposition.” That is why his death has meaning. It is symbolic of the end of the era when Democrats still loved this country.

I wonder if Russert was taking a little aspirin a day to keep a heart attack away.

Ah, the miracle of baby asperin.

Yes, heart patients almost always are put on the baby asperin a day regimen. BUT....don't forget, that aspirin, plus other medications to control placque buildup, tend to THIN the blood.

If a piece of that plaque broke off and lodged in Tim's artery, as is alleged, that baby aspirin, plus any other medication of that sort Tim was taking, likely made him bleed out way quicker than had he not been taking the medication.

Boom, a piece of sharp plaque breaks off and cuts the coronary artery, already stretched quite thin by the buildup of the plaque within. Boom, the internal bleeding begins and by the time they got him to the hospital there was no saving him. First, the ER docs would have to have opened his chest and find out where he's bleeding, then they'd have to give him a transfusion. It was all too much in the short amount of time available.

Truthfully, as I've said before, my cardio guy would not give me permission to leave the hospital after my stress test of death forcing me to sign out against medical advice. I was firmly warned that I was a walking time bomb. I too had been on a protocol of blood thinners and the doc told me that should a piece of plaque break off I could be dead within a minute. He told me the heart was unpredictable and there I was walking around with four veins filled with crap, all ready to pop.

Hey, I took a chance and I knew it. I was scared bejeesus that weekend before my Monday coronary bypass surgery but I'd already been walking around for at least a year with a big heart-shaped bomb in my chest (I had a sort of "coronary" event a year prior which I'd tossed off as my imagination...jaw pain, nausea....).

I made it through that weekend because by golly no way was I going to sit bored and restless all weekend in a hospital and truth be told, the medicos agreed with me. My cardio guy didn't want to take responsibility is all and I don't blame him. Hey, I'm a conservative and I believe in PERSONAL responsibility, which I took when I signed those "AMA" papers. I was fine with the whole thing and if a clot had broken off and killed me so close to the operation that would clear it all, don't cry for me Argentina.

I still think, given all the new information now available, that Russert knew he had heart issues and like me on that fateful weekend, he thought he could beat the odds. Obviously I don't know this for sure but I think he didn't want to undergo such a major operation so close to an election and he hoped the medicine would keep him healthy until he could fit the operation into his schedule.

May 7, 2008 During MSNBC’s election night coverage of the Indiana and North Carolina primaries, Russert declares Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) the Democratic nominee shortly after midnight. “We now know who the Democratic nominee’s going to be, and no one’s going to dispute it,” he said. His statement frames an emerging media narrative that the Democratic primary is over, leading to strong objections from the campaign of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.).

You made us angry, but you became pretty good at political analysis during this hellish election cycle. There were times I wanted to strangle you and times - more of them lately - that I found myself agreeing with you. Mostly, we just agreed to disagree.

Shame you were called back just when you seemed to be gaining some wisdom from the experience you've gained, but you haven't been looking any too healthy and also awfully tired of late and I've been wondering about your health. You'll be missed, even by those of us on the other side of the aisle. Rest in peace, sir.

Every year for the past 20, my husband has done Christmas trees for a local tree farmer and Dittohead (who lost his wife this year). When my son turned 12, he wanted to try and do trees, and as a strong young man who needed a father figure, we let him.

Hubby is also an EMT.

That year, a 38 year-old man asked to be hired on (it's extra money for Christmas). So no problem. He was on the (tractor) trailer helping to get the trees loaded when he had a massive. So my son's first experience with death was holding the man's head on his lap while Hubby and the one other EMT took turned doing CPR. He died in the ALS vehicle en route to the cardiac care unit.

I was worried because they were so late coming home - they didn't get home until after 11:00. They managed to get the story out - took a while - while trying to get out of their layers of wet clothes.

My son discovered he still had the man's false teeth in his pocket. They were, of course, given back to the family before the funeral. Turned out he had been diagnosed with severe heart problems and was just...bored, pushing the envelope, didn't want to slow down, gambling...and he lost.

"If Hillary is indeed out of the picture, IMHO, I doubt she has stopped thinking about it and sincerely blaming and ferociously causing harm to those who she might feel aided or abetted in her less than stellar performance."

But Tim was supporting Hillary. I find the infamous Clinton MO to be a little hard to believe at this time.

It was Russert who in, October 31, 2007  Philadelphia, asked Hillary , "Do you . . . support your governor's plan to give an illegal immigrant a driver's license?"  It was Hillary's first big trip up. "She stumbled badly at last night's Democratic debate when she repeatedly refused to give a direct answer on both sides of the issue" answer seemed to evolve into the first snag in her 'presidential destiny'. The Clinton's harshly criticized Russert, afterwards. It was down hill for Hillary from there. Read more of what Clinton's supporters thought about many of Russert's questions from that debate here. (Isn't it odd that Spitzer was also brought down by what was an obvious set up?)

Then remember her reference to Bobbie Kennedy's assassination, and implication that the same might happen to Obama, that was a basic mind control type call for Obama's assignation, using a classic advertising subliminal technique which is translated in a vulnerable mind as a call for a hit on Senator Obama's life.

She publicly announced that she now has an enemies list. "Those Loyal to the Clintons Take Note of Those Who Were Not" By Mark Leibovich Published: June 11, 2008

For proof, look no further than Doug Band, chief gatekeeper to former President Bill Clinton.

Band keeps close track of the past allies and beneficiaries of the Clintons who supported Obama's campaign, three Clinton associates and campaign officials said.
