No More Excuses: The U.S. Needs To Tap Into Its Own Oil Reserves
IBD ^ | June 13, 2008 | Tim Walberg

Posted on 06/13/2008 5:57:54 PM PDT by Kaslin

The Department of Commerce recently announced that the U.S. trade deficit reached $60.9 billion this past April. America's trade deficit increased by $600 million from April 2007 to April 2008, even though U.S. exports increased by $25 billion.

Why is our country facing a rising trade deficit even though American-made exports grew 19.2% over the last year (April 2007 to April 2008)?

The answer is found at gas stations across the country and in America's $34.5 billion petroleum deficit, which is roughly half of our monthly trade deficit.

America's dependence on foreign energy forces us to import about 12 million barrels of oil a day, sending billions of dollars to many countries that do not share our interests.

A barrel of oil has gone from $70 to $140 over the last year, dramatically increasing our trade deficit and shattering the family budgets of millions of Americans.

National Priority

Our country has vast and large supplies of energy, but unfortunately tapping into American energy sources has become controversial and mired in politics.

And while political games are played in Washington, D.C., Americans keep paying more at the pump.

Just as with the Manhattan Project or the race to the moon, breaking our dependence on foreign oil should be a national priority. Congress needs to allow an increase in America's investment in our overall production of energy.

Last week, I introduced a discharge petition to force a vote on a bill to increase U.S. energy production and invest in alternative sources of energy.

The appropriately named No More Excuses Energy Act, H.R. 3089, would increase the supply of energy produced in America.

The democrats want gas at $10 a gal and the economy in ruins by November. They want the American armed forces to come cowering home from Afghanistan and Iraq with their tails between their legs. They want more natural disasters that they can blame on “global warming” and say “Bush’s fault”. They are the enemy.

The “judges”, lawyers and loonies won’t let us tap our natural resources. They want America to collapse and become just another sorryass, third world nation. Just think, the taxpayers sent their sorryasses to college and this is what we get.

More than half of our trade deficit is PETROLEUM! I never knew that.

America cannot maintain a high standard of living without cheap plentiful energy. Energy and petroleum are used in the production of EVERYTHING. If we want to go back to the days of our grandparents when average families couldn’t afford vacations and restaurant dining was a rare event, we are on the right track. We’re on our way there.

My Energy Manifesto:

* Cease all ethanol production. It takes away from food production and the unintended consequence is higher food costs. As diesel prices go up, the cost of farming tips the balance of cost to make ethanol a bad idea. Just say "no" to ethanol! Even Jimmy Carter says that diverting farm production from food to fuel is dumb – even HE gets it. This will create only ONE "blend" of gasoline and will cease regional "boutique" blends (gasohols) which are stupid, costly, and meaningless. Trucking custom blends around the country is wasteful. Ethanol blends may actually lead to fewer miles to the gallon, and adds to the cost of production and transportation. Newer cars do not need oxygenated fuels.

* Lift the restrictions in order to drill for oil in Alaska, Gulf of Mexico, and other sites in the CONUS as a matter of national security.

* Encourage the petro industry to construct state-of-the-art refineries and/or retrofit current and dormant ones and crank up production for our newly-accessed oil in the CONUS.

* Make all “carbon credit” scams unlawful. Discrediting Algore should have been a slam-dunk a long time ago. Stop electing Reps who buy into the Global Warming / Global Cooling / Climate Change Hoax. CO2 is not our enemy!

* Construct SEVERAL, regional Pebble-Bed Modular Reactors (or other similar modern designs) that are rechargeable, and cleaner than any current nuclear generator design. Refine spent nuke fuel for recycling. DO SOMETHING NUCLEAR to resolve energy problems.

* Use the residual heat from the reactors above to process motor fuel from coal and/or shale. Even though Clinton "stole" some of the best coal reserves, we still have a lot to use.

* Become independent enough to make the cartels (i.e. OPEC) inconsequential.

* Convince local taxing bodies to lift or cap the sales tax on gasoline so that as gas prices go up, the local tax collectors don’t see a windfall revenue jump at the expense of the consumer. The Federal government could compel the states (and locals) to cap the fuel taxes.

If you squint real hard, and read between the lines, the ‘manifesto’ will require fewer RINOs and LibDems and the election of some clear-minded conservatives to even consider the above.

Communists want to take over the country, or destroy it. They really don't care which, since they view the former mostly as a means to the latter, anyway.

Our liberal overlords don't give a d@mn what the American people think. Consider that the libs control both congress and the judicial branch. And they work together to subvert the nation. If the congress caves and allows us to improve our lives the courts will stop us dead in our tracks. They are working together to enslave us. The corruption is incredible.

I am tired of accommodating my masters to live my life as they demand I do. By what right do they hurt my family and my fellow citizens. By what right do they brainwash my children. By what right do they make me live my life by their leave? It is time to break our chains.

Caribou steaks anyone?

I think if we drill in ANWR we’ll have an overabundance of caribou and they’ll have to give away sweepstakes hunting trips to thin them out!

Agree!!!

* Lift the restrictions in order to drill for oil in Alaska, Gulf of Mexico, and other sites in the CONUS as a matter of national security.

Lets drill off the coast of California, if they don't like it, shut off their power (they IMPORT ELECTRICITY from other states, we should telll them that it is time to STFU!)

* Make all “carbon credit” scams unlawful. Discrediting Algore should have been a slam-dunk a long time ago. Stop electing Reps who buy into the Global Warming / Global Cooling / Climate Change Hoax. CO2 is not our enemy!

Agree 110%

"It's kinda looking like the Publicans want that too."

They have been voting the right way on this, at least, except for the handful of rinos who always vote with the dems, as has been the case for the last 7 yrs. The problem is that the President hasn't taken these turncoats to the woodshed and they've thumbed their noses at him with no consequence. They are too comfortable in their little kingdoms and little chance of having to work in the real world for their bread.

Duncan Hunter was my first choice, though I like Sheriff Joe and Judge Roy.

Kinda pathetic when the economy is so superficial the main source of jobs is bars and restaurants. If this country doesn’t turn things around, some day the only job opportunities will be working for the government or working for tips...the two career paths I despise the most.

If we don’t do something soon, the Saudis or Chinese may call in our debts and demand to be paid in Alaska, where they will do their own drilling and sell the oil back to us at a profits. What will the envirocrazies do then?

It will put most things “out of business” in most of our towns. As for Florida and California’s tourist industry? If gas gets more expensive, they can forget about tourists anyway. It won’t matter whether they have pump jacks littering the landscape.

Cheap gas is a thing of the past, but if we’re having to pay $5 or $6 per gallon, I’d rather the money stayed here in the U.S.

Precisely... but wait, there's More!
( Channeling Vegematic commercials... )

Gas at $5 or $8 or $10 a gallon translates to higher energy coasts across the board.

All those excuses Florida's Christ and Gramham use to block offshore drilling?

Wait until all the tourist trade dries up from fuel costs, and all those retirees who moved there to escape winters up North can't afford their power bills for air conditioning any more.

I hear ya. I have an aged mother who lives alone and has suffered for about 25 years with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis, and related health issues, plus the depression that comes with all the chronic pain and loneliness. My sister and her preteen son are nearby but I need to be able to travel, with my kids, to see her more frequently. It’s an 8.5 hour drive, if you make good time. She won’t be around too many more years. I can’t afford nearly $100 one way each time I need to go. It was far more doable when it was 1/2 to 1/3 that much.

It's a sign of affluence when people don't have to eat at home, and when we are looking for ways to make things more expensive!!

The article looks like many, nothing new. USA produces 8 million bpd domestically, hardly as if somebody is not allowing production at all.

I wouldn’t hold my breath for Bush to take them to the woodshed. And the ones who vote right on this issue don’t seem to be able to (en masse) vote right on so many more issues...

I’m tired of voting for the lesser of two evils. At some point, we have to lose on principle to send a message. I hate the idea, really hate it, but I feel they have pushed us to this unsavory choice.

Yep, I understand what you're saying. What I'm debating is that if we do send them the message, will we lose America for our lifetime?

If obama wins the first thing on his agenda will be draconian firearms bans passed by a dem congress. Next will be amnesty for illegals, that's 20-50 million dem voters, followed by kyoto type shackles around our ankles. Then there's the Supreme Court, because of our gutless politicians, the only hope for ending abortion in America. There has been a Conservative minority throughout the Presidents terms and it will only get worse under obama.

We are desperately in need of a Fire Breathing Conservative. We know who they are but the country club RNC will not back them.

That I cannot answer. I wish I could. But as much as we love America, nations rise and fall. The founders knew this kind of thing was a possibility, which was why they structured things as they did. But they also knew that human ventures always eventually fail because we are selfish and fallen human beings.
