New York "Sufferring" A Foreign Fashion Model Shortage

There's a model shortage in the fashion capital of the world and New York Representative Anthony Weiner is working to right that wrong. Seriously.

Weiner is sponsoring a bill that gives models “of distinguished merit and ability” their own visa classification (P-4 status) which would group them with entertainers and athletes.

Believe it or not (might not be hard to believe for those of you who are critical of our visa policies or ever applied for one yourself), models coming to work in the U.S. compete with high-tech workers for the same type of H1-B visa.

In 2007 America accepted 700,000 new citizens, 1 million "legal residents" (usually family members of new citizens), and issued 500,000 temporary work visas.

Research by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS.org) has determined that the median wage for most foreign visa workers is the same as or less than the median wage for American workers in the same occupation, including the software engineers that Bill Gates claims he can't find.

Apparently, raising wages, raising benefits, and improving working conditions as a strategy to attract more American workers has never occurred to Mr. Gates.

Besides fashion models, our government issues thousands of visas for other tough to fill jobs like waiters, hotel housekeepers, and nurses.

One final note:

The USA agricultural crisis that requires tens of thousands of foreign workers?

Turns out 50% of crop pickers are American citizens.

And just in case you couldn't guess in advance, the CIS determined that wages for crop picking, adjusted for inflation, have not gone up for ten years.
